PostRegion code hack posted by Organensis, November 17 2010:

I have a DVD-C500 purchased in zone 1, and got inspired by the postings on DVD-C550 and DVD-P191 which I expected should be fairly similar to the one I need. Well, I did manage to get to the famous grid, but none of the code combinations worked for me. My original setting is 3, 8, 19, 21, 22, 24. I've tried to add 9 and removed the other numbers gradually till I was only left with 9 and 24; to no avail. Suggestions welcome...

PostRegion code hack posted by AtypicalJohn, December 18 2010:

Confirm Organensis' comment above, the hack for the Samsung
C550 will not work on this DVD. FYI I tried a hack for another
Samsung player on my region 1 C500 (can't remember the exact
one), and it changed the video output such that nothing would
appear on my TV screen. This could have effectively killed my
player but...

Lesson: BEFORE applying unconfirmed hacks, carefully copy down
the player's original status/number matrix. I did, and was
able to get my machine back to original condition by keying
the remote "blind" i.e. nothing on screen to guide me.

PostRegion code hack posted by frisbee42, January 15 2011:

Ok, I've been reading about this a bit.

I have a region 1 Samsung DVD-C500 that I bought and would like to play region 2 discs with.

I tried the DVD-C550 hack that gets the "grid" screen up:

(with no disc)
Repeat, Fast reverse (below disc menu button), next chapter, fast forward, previous chapter, play.

This brings up the grid. The default highlighted numbers on mine were: 3,8,19,21,22,24

After a considerable amount of fooling around I discovered that the first number determines the region, and numbers 8 and 24 are not necessary for normal play.

So 3,19,21 is sufficient to set to region 1.
For 2,19,21 works for region 2.

They're mutually exclusive, however, so I have to change the code each time if i want to go between region 1 and region 2 discs. Kind of a pain but manageable.

I still haven't figured out to make it truly region free, but this is at least a step in the right direction - my guess is for playing discs from other regions just experiment with changing the first number.

Hope that helps some. Customer service from Samsung is terrible, I called a few times and each time they insisted that there was no way to change the region.

PostRegion code hack posted by Kipstone, February 06 2011:

Samsung DVD C500
Trying to follow the hack info from frisbee42 but cannot find as to how to enter
all the relevant commands to bring up the matrix to change the region.
- What screen do you start from on the DVD?
- Which is the "next chapter" and "previous chapter" buttons?
- What do you use to change the number on the remote?

Forgive the ignorance - this is the first time I have attempted this.

Thanks

PostRegion code hack posted by frisbee42, March 25 2011:

Kipstone - to open the grid, key in the following sequence on your remote:

The "Repeat" button (not the one with A-B on it), the "fast reverse" button (two arrows to the left on the button), the "next chapter" button (two arrows to the right with a line at the end), the "fast forward" button (two arrows to the right), the "previous chapter" button (two arrows to the left with a line at the end) and play.

Make sure you do this without the tray closed and no disc in and it should work.

PostRegion code hack posted by Milesy, April 06 2011:

Having searched everywhere for a hack for this DVD player I stumbled across the Samsung c350 hack and tried that - Success !

Here is a repost of the hack for the c350

a. Start the DVD with no disc.
b. Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the screen.
c. Use the remote for the following steps:

1. Click the Repeat (not the Repeat A/B) button located next to the Disc Menu button.
2. Click the Fast Rewind button <<
3. Click the Next Chapter button >>|
4. Click the Fast Forward button >>
5. Click the Prev Chapter button |<<
6. Click the Play button >||

d. If you did it right, a grid of numbers will appear on the screen, some of them will be highlighted and some not.
e. Write down the highlighted numbers in case you need to restore original settings:

For region #1 the numbers are: 3,8,19,21,22,24

f. To change to Region #2, use the circle/arrow keys (those that encircle the ENTER button) to make sure the following numbers are highlighted: 2,8,19,21,22,24 and to make sure the number 3 is no longer highlighted. Basically, you will only be highlighting #2 and un-highlighting #3

I, Play button >||
h. The DVD will automatically turn itself off.
i. Start it back up and enjoy.

NOTE: The DVD will no longer play Region 1 DVDs unless you change the codes back using the same steps as above.

To now change to region 0:

A. Start the DVD with no disc.
b. Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the screen.
c. Use the remote for the following steps:

1. Click the Repeat (not the Repeat A/B) button located next to the Disc Menu button.
2. Click the Fast Forward button >>
3. Click the Fast Rewind button <<
4. Click the Fast Forward button >>
5. Click the Up Button /\
6. Click the Down Button \/

You should see the little 0 pop up on the right corner.

Turn your player off-

Turn it back on and play any DVD!

I can confirm that Milesy's codes worked for me. I have a region 1 bought in the US. Make sure to change to Region 2 before trying to change to Region 0 (region-free) or it won't work. I tried to skip the Region 2 step and go straight to region-free with no luck.

Thanks for help!

PostRegion code hack posted by raq, July 05 2011:

Bravo! Milesy's codes and directions worked perfectly. Special thanks for the very clear instructions and descriptions of control buttons on remote - this was my first hacking operation and it worked on the first attempt!

PostRegion code hack posted by Kipstone, August 11 2011:

Thanks so much for the great and detailed information - this worked perfectly
foe me and I am far from being technically proficient!!!!

PostRegion code hack posted by dianeellen, January 04 2012:

Can confirm the region code hack posted by Milesy on April 06, 2011 still works perfectly on a Samsung DVD-C500 just purchased at BestBuy in NY.

Using the remote I followed Milesy's instructions. One thing to note is that on my remote the "Play" button is a triangle |> that points to the right (it's next to the "Stop" button that is a square), everything else was the same though.

I appreciate the detailed instructions. I was a bit nervous at the two step process (changing from Region 1 to 2 and then changing from Region 2 to 0), but it was easy and now I can play all my DVDs from the UK and elsewhere.

Thank you!

Has anyone experienced the problem that the "grid" never appears again after it's done it once? I implemented a hack (removing all numbers from the grid except "9") which made the player get stuck in Region 1. Nothing I do will bring up the grid again.

PostRegion code hack posted by ktom2012, July 21 2012:

Just purchased a Samsung C500 DVD player. Used the following steps to make this player region free;
1. Start the DVD with no disc and use the remote;
2. Click the Repeat (not the Repeat A/B) button located far left of the remote.
3. Click the Fast Rewind button <<
4. Click the Next Chapter button >>|
5. Click the Fast Forward button >>
6. Click the Prev Chapter button |<<
7. Click the Play button >
8. Once the grid selections appear, use the arrow buttons to select/highlight "9" for region free. Make sure to select "save and exit" as shown below to screen on your television. The player will shut-off automatically. Restart and play with any DVDs.
Good luck!

The last hack from 21-Jul-2012 does not work.
I added the 9 to the existing numbers.
Or it is necessary to deselect 3,8,19,21,22,24 ?

PostRegion code hack posted by WhoMe?, September 14 2012:

The region code hack posted by Milesy on April 06 2011 works.
Just used it on a c500 I bought today from BB.

PostRegion code hack posted by htimsj1030, March 05 2013:

I purchased my player on 3/5/13. Milesy's hack worked with the following
differences. The number 8 did not appear highlighted when the grid appeared so
I did not highlight it when changing to region 2. When I moved to Region 0 after
i did the hack the 0 appeared in the top left corner of the screen not the top
right corner.

PostRegion code hack posted by Portia258, June 01 2013:

This is to confirm that the Milesy hack worked on June 1, 2013, for a new C500.
Not all of the numbers he lists were highlighted - not the 8 and not one of the
numbers in 20's - but don't worry about that. Just unhighlight the 3 and
highlight the 2. I am using only Region 2 disks on this player, so I did not take
the extra step and do the universal fix to Region 0.

PostRegion code hack posted by spielhund, July 05 2013:

Just bought a Samsung DVD C500, and want to confirm hack by
Milesy still works. It took a few tries to get the grid up,
and only 3,19,21,and 24 were highlighted. I followed steps to
switch to Region 2, tested with a DVD, then moved on to code-
free, got the 0 in the corner. Tested with both Region 1 and 2
DVD's.

Just wanted to let others know hack still works. Sometimes
hard to tell when they update models, etc.

PostRegion code hack posted by antiblazer, July 06 2013:

Big thanks to Milsey and confirming the hack works. The Samsung DVD-C500
player was purchased for $20 from amazon. A few clarifications:

1. To use the region 0 hack, the region 2 hack must be first applied. I tried
applying the region 0 hack immediately and it didn't work until I applied the
region 2 hack beforehand.

2. The '0' success message for the region 0 hack appeared in the top left
corner, rather than on the right side.

PostRegion code hack posted by ddwoff, July 26 2013:

Tried Milesy's hack today, with my new Samsung DVD C500. It
was manufactured 4/13. I got through the initial code change
from Region 1 to Region 2 just fine, DVD player turned itself
off. When I turned it back on, I ended up with a Tray Error.
From looking elsewhere on this forum, it seems that Samsung
has put in some kind of coding to disable hacking, and locked
up my player for good. :( Just wanted to warn others that
this may happen. Not sure if I'll be able to fix this, may
have to buy another one (because money grows on trees,
right?)...

PostRegion code hack posted by Galega, July 26 2013:

It worked for me on July 26, 2013.

I purchased mine from Amazon on July 24, 2013 and it arrived
today, July 26, 2013. Model code sticker on the outside of
the box says: DVD-C500/XAA.

I followed the instructions on this thread from Milesy
(April 06 2011) and it worked.

I did not try to play any discs with the player before
applying the hack.

I did not update the firmware before applying the hack (and
I didn't update the firmware after the hack either).

I applied the hack in 2 steps, just like Milesy instructed.

During the first step (changing from region 1 to region 2) I
saw the same thing that Portia258 mentioned above, for me
not all of the same numbers were highlighted in the grid.
The important thing is just to highlight 2, and unhighlight
3.

At the end of the second step (after I changed it to region
free) the zero also appeared in the upper left corner for me
(not the upper right corner).

I tested it with a region 1 and a region 2 DVD, and bot
worked.

Thanks!

PostRegion code hack posted by ddwoff, July 27 2013:

Okay, I ended up taking the locked up DVD player back and got
a new one. I unlocked the new one successfully. As previous
posters have pointed out, the only important thing to do when
you get to the number grid is remove the highlight from 3 and
then highlight 2. Leave all other numbers the way they were.
On my first try, I added a couple of numbers that were on
Milesy's list, that had not been highlighted on my number grid
before (8 and 19). I don't know if that's what locked up the
DVD player, or if it was just a faulty player to begin with,
but I left those numbers off on my second try, and it worked.
I went on with the second step to make it Region 0, and it
worked like a charm. Zero pops up in top left corner. DVDs
play great.

FRUSTRATION. CAN ANYONE HELP?

is it possible that samsung has wised up to the hack that milesy has so kindly
supplied and locked down my machine permanently?

i have a new C500/XAA, which was sent to me because the previous one, sold
as region-free out of the box, started freezing and skipping after a few discs
were played on it.

i've tried milesy's quite specific hack several times (read=10) following his
directions very carefully, and...nada...

any suggestions from experts out there?

PostRegion code hack posted by mrudbeck, September 03 2013:

I just unlocked a Samsung C500 using a combination of
Milesy's instructions from 2011 and ddwoff's instructions
from July 2013. Here is the combination of the two sets of
instructions:

a.Start the DVD with no disc.
b. Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the screen.
c. Use the remote for the following steps:

1. Click the Repeat (not the Repeat A/B) button located next
to the Disc Menu button.
2. Click the Fast Rewind button <<
3. Click the Next Chapter button >>|
4. Click the Fast Forward button >>
5. Click the Prev Chapter button |<<
6. Click the Play button >||

d. If you did it right, a grid of numbers will appear on the
screen, some of them will be highlighted and some not.
e. Write down the highlighted numbers in case you need to
restore original settings:

For region #1, my player showed the numbers are: 3,19,21,24
(slightly different from what Milesy showed back in 2011).
At this point, remove the highlight from “3” and highlight
“2” instead. Hit play as shown on the screen and the player
should now shut off.
The player will now play region 2 DVDs. To change to region
“0” (region free), Milesy’s directions from 2011 still work:
a. Start the DVD with no disc.
b. Wait for "No Disc" message to appear on the screen.
c. Use the remote for the following steps:

1. Click the Repeat (not the Repeat A/B) button located next
to the Disc Menu button.
2. Click the Fast Forward button >>
3. Click the Fast Rewind button <<
4. Click the Fast Forward button >>
5. Click the Up Button /\
6. Click the Down Button \/

You should see the little 0 pop up on the right corner (I
didn’t see this, but it may have appeared and disappeared –
either way, this procedure still works.)

Turn your player off-

Turn it back on and play any DVD!
Regardless, the above worked for me on a player I picked up
September 1, 2013. Good luck.

PostRegion code hack posted by mintystuff, July 11 2014:

Followed instructions by Miley and ddwolf, and the combined instruction of
mrudbeck, which worked smoothly.

A side note, my "0" appeared on the top left hand corner of my screen instead of
the right corner as indicated. But it was there, and after, my dvd player is now
successfully sitting at Region 0.

I also want to thank everyone here who contributed. My Samsung C-500, bought
on September 2013 (manufactured on June 2013) is now region-free!

PostRegion code hack posted by notmymonkey, September 29 2014:

There are so few players you can just grab at your local BB,
that I registered here just to confirm that Milesy's hack STILL
works.
My player was manufactured in July of 2014, purchased September
2014, and after following Milesy's instructions, it has
successfully played discs from regions 1, 2, and 4.
Also, maybe it goes without saying, but despite both the
product manual and Samsung reps insisting that players sold in
North America are only capable of NTSC, this is obviously not
true. PAL discs look beautiful on my NTSC tv, without any
external converter, so the player must be converting on the
fly. Just unlock the regions and you're good to go!

My hacked DVD player died after a couple of years (it's not
the greatest quality item, but for $40 what do you expect) but
I just purchased another from Amazon in October 2014 and
applied the same hack (per Milesy above, with my comments
added in other posts) and it still works.

PostRegion code hack posted by Struppy, December 24 2014:

Bought my Samsung DVD-C500/XAA 12/18/14 (built Oct.2014)at Best Buy. Mrudeck's region code hack works as written. My "0" appears on the top left of the screen and disappears quickly, so watch the screen as you press the #6 down button.

Comment on Notmymonkey's post about playing PAL discs. Discs are made in a digital format (not NTSC or PAL) with a region code. The Samsung DVD player will convert the digital disc to an NTSC output for American TV's. Some DVD players can convert a disc to either NTSC or PAL output. In other words it's not the disc that is in a digital format, it's the player that outputs the disc to either NTSC or PAL, or both if it has that option.

Bought another one of these DVD players in May 2015 from Amazon. Hack still works per my posts above

Successfully unlocked Samsung C500, which I had bought in September (manufactured 2015.07).
Initially I followed Milesy's instructions, but ended up with infamous "Tray Error". Luckily I was able to fix it and reset
machine. Then, used mrudbeck's instructions to set it to region 0, and it worked.

PostRegion code hack posted by DianeEllen, May 12 2016:

Can once again confirm that the instructions from Milesy on April 6, 2011, and mrudbeck on September 3, 2013, still work on the
Samsung DVD-C500/XAA. I originally purchased one on January 4, 2012 and left a message back then that the hack worked. That
DVD player broke today and I just went to BB and purchased the same Samsung DVD-C500/XAA, the only difference is on the back
the Manufacture date is now 2016 instead of 2011.

When I got to the code screen, my original numbers were the same as mrudbeck's 3, 19, 21, 24. Perhaps I should have first un-
highlighted the 3, and then highlighted the 2, but I did it in reverse order. The only trouble I had was when I first turned it on it
asked what language -- I chose "English", and then I kept having to turn the main power off on my TV and the DVD, to get the DVD
player to function. I had to do that twice, but the codes worked great, I just had to reboot the power each time. I think after going
from Region 1 to 2, and then going from 2 to 0, the 0 flashed on the left side of the screen. I just put in my Region 2 and Region 1
DVD's so everything works great.

Thank you again Milesy, and you too mrudbeck! Don't know what I'd do without this site.
