Synfig Studio

NEW VERSION 1.0.2 / 1.1.11 Beta

Synfig Studio is a free and open-source 2D animation software, designed as powerful industrial-strength solution for creating film-quality animation using a vector and bitmap artwork. It eliminates the need to create animation frame-by frame, allowing you to produce 2D animation of a higher quality with fewer people and resources. Synfig Studio is available for Windows, Linux and MacOS X

Synfig Studio builds updated
Posted on August 8, 2016 by Konstantin Dmitriev

Dear friends, here goes one more update for Synfig Studio! This one includes all the latest fixes that our developer Ivan Mahonin done during our work on Morevna animated short.

List of changes:

Fixed crash when trying to use Brush Tool.
Fixed behavior of “Insert Item” action for Splines (it should be different from “Insert item & Keep shape” action).
Fix weird behavior of animated layers, duplicated through Clipboard Copy-Paste.
Fixed artifacts of Color Correct Layer.
Fixed issue with incorrect handling of Onto Blend Method for some layers.
Use relative paths when importing Papagayo’s PGO files.
Fixed handling of relative filenames when referencing to Papagayo’s PGO files (and, actually, anything that you might pass to AnimatedFile converter)

Fixed issues with sif files generated by Inkscape (bug #883).
“Add” converter now supports reverse manipulations for Vector value types.
Fixed artifacts when rendering at resolution height more than 781 px.
Fixed incorrect placement of Text layer.
Fixed Z-Range visualization when rendering from commandline.
Fixed blend methods: Add, Substract, Difference.
Translations updated.
Development builds updated
Posted by Konstantin Dmitriev on February 2, 2016

The new development builds of Synfig Studio now available for download! This time we provide builds for all three supported platforms (Windows, Linux and OSX) at the same time. All builds have identical set of features (check the full list below).

With this we have reached an important milestone - the results of our work on Synfig optimization (namely - the Cobra rendering engine) now available for all platforms and is part of the main development branch. So we can continue Synfig optimization without the risk of interfering with development of other features (which are surely will come soon).

Download development builds
With the current development build you will get:

Multithreaded Cobra rendering engine, supporting the following layers:
Vector layers: Region, Polygon, Outline and Advanced Outline.
Image layer.
Transformation layers: Translate, Rotate, Scale, Stretch.
Groups and Switch Groups.
Blur layer (basic implementation, optimization isn't complete).
Primitives: Circle, Rectangle, Star (not optimized yet).
Gradients (not optimized yet).
Usability improvements:
Completely reworked preferences dialogue. Thanks to Yu Chen (concept) and Jerome Blanchi (implementation).
Tooltips for group transformation widget. Thanks to Jerome Blanchi.
Selecting handle on the workarea now highlights the corresponding parameter in the Parameters Panel. Thanks to Jerome Blanchi.
Split and merged tangents now displayed in different way. Thanks to Jerome Blanchi.
Other changes:
Synfig code now compatible with C++11 (see issue #904), thanks to Jerome Blanchi.
Fixed rendering of Image layers in Cobra for OSX.

All features / Full description

Spatial resolution-independence
Most elements are vector-based, and all layers are parametrically generated, hence even when changing the target resolution of a project, the only pixelation will occur in imported raster images, not the built-in components.
Temporal resolution independence
Animation-keyframes are automatically interpolated by the computer, resulting in smooth motion
High Dynamic-Range Imaging (HDRI)
By using floating-point math in the image calculations, HDRI processing allows canvases to internally understand a far greater range of pixel luminance, resulting in better lighting effects, and improved color composition.
Pentablet-friendly tools
The draw tool already reads the pressure sensitivity channel off your favorite tablets, for natural line weighting, and more to come!
Artist-oriented design
While it may not be obvious in this early state, Synfig (and its proprietary predecessors) has been designed from the ground up with animation workflow in mind.
Path-based Gradients
Unlike purely SVG-based vector software, and most consumer-level animation programs, Synfig has full support for gradient paths - gradients that follow along a drawn shape. This allows artists to easily add soft shading to animation without the trouble of painting it onto every frame.
Layers
Synfig supports a multitude of layers of various types; geometric, gradients, filters, distortions, transformations, fractal and a few others.
