Had it since Christmas, but never wrote a review.
-VCD/SVCD support is great.
-MPEG-ISO implementation works fine on most files, sometimes glitches up on the shadier ones
-Haven't been able to get a miniDVD to play correctly. It recognizes the format (Says "MINIDVD" when you insert the disc), but everything I've tried has skipped way too much.
-Horrible remote layout. FF/RW are shared with left/right menu arrows. Need to hold Stop for a few seconds to eject.
-File browser is decent, presents all playable files on the CD (MP3, JPG, MPG), and can be navigated as a huge list or with the proper directory structure. Playlists can be made on-the-fly. Only downside is the remote. Since FF/RW is left/right, can't listen to music and navigate menus at the same time.
All in all, a great player, much better than my old Panasonic RV30. |

I am happy with this DVD player until it stops showing the video. I can hear the audio but no video. I looked into manual and did all things recommended. I even checked the cables. Any clue why I am only hearing the audio but no video. Any help will be appreciated.

Had this for 3 months now and I find it was easily worth the $95 CAD I paid at Wal-Mart. Plays jpg slideshow images, cdr's cdrw's svcd's vcd's with headers(chapters). It has been a good player upto date minus a few bugs. First is you need to wait ~ 3 seconds when you power on before you can open the tray(3 seconds doesn't seem long but can be just waiting on a tray to eject)
Secondly I've noticed recently with some dvds and svcds that the player would freeze up but only if you have it paused longer than 10 minutes(that might be the problem there)
Thirdly I have noticed when I chapter my vcd/svcd's that I cannot use the rewind button to rewind back a chapter but instead I can only rewind to the beginning of that chapter I was in therefore you're forced you use the previous button or manually select the appropriate chapter and fast forward
Overall it was better than our previous dvd player Panasonic 7something which was more expensive and bulkier. |

| Great player got it for free from a friend! Played everything I had with no problems. Region hack works perfectly. I tried a UK PAL R2 and it worked without a hitch. Only thing I can complain about I guess is that it does not have the eject button on the remote other than that works like a charm. I definitely recommend it. |

I just returned a magnavox dvd player and bought this to replace it. I was originally looking to get a new magnavox, but this one was better than the magnavox dvd455 and cheaper--I love everything about it. esp. the price, a $38.99 closeout at bestbuy. It was just sitting by itself with no price, so I asked the salesperson and was happy to hear about the low price. Its successor is the dvd727, which has optical out (the version I bought only has coaxical out), but that's all I needed.
The blue display is great, it's easy on the eyes. The player readers cdr with mixed media, raw mpg cds (I had one or two mpgs that rolled, but this was maybe out of the 20 I tested). DVD quality is just wonderful too. The mp3 menus are easy to navigate (mp3 long file name would be nice, but for the price I just can't complain). There is a shuffle and repeat option for mp3's--awesome! I have the dvd player hooked up to the altec lansing xa3021 2.1 speaker system for tv/dvd/gaming (only $40 at target). So for $80 I have a low budget, but nice sounding home theatre.
I like the feature that lets you do frame advance (a slow motion fast forward). Also this player has a 5 disc memory recall, so that means for the last 5 movies you've played it remembers where you've left off and bookmarks it, then recalls it next time you put in the disc.
The remote...well, it's pretty easy to use. There is an option to split-up vcds or svcds that do not have menus into moving pic displayed chapters, cool! My only complaint is the remote marks up rather easily, it's the finish I believe. But this does not cause any problems with the player or remote (obviously).
I would say if I had paid regular price, 9 stars, but for less than $40 this player is a steal. It's hard to find a player of this quality for the price....maybe it's impossible actually. Get it will it before they are all gone! |

I bought this DVD player about 3 months ago, I did play almost everything until yesterday. Now it plays nothing, not even a CD or DVD.
I called Philips, it will cost $29.95 just to do a replacement and I will have to pay S&H to ship it to. What kind of warranty is this?
If a DVD player only last 3 months, please stay away from it.

I own this player for one month, and this is one of the best players I have tried. It plays every kind of media with excellent audio and video quality. Only minor drawback I found is in some mp3 tracks (vbr, Lame encoded with "standard" setting), it keeps repeating last 2-3 seconds and never skips to next song. I must press Next in remote. CBR mp3s play flawless.

The 726 plays all of my burned DVDs. And it will play DVD/CD MP3s.
BUT...the MP3 playback display sucks. It doesn't even show the filename of the track that's playing. It will say "72/203", so you've got to scroll down 72 items to see the file. Stupid.
And, on a bunch of commercial DVDs, it displays subtitles (even though I don't select them), AND there's a 1"x2" angle icon (on my 27" TV) that shows up for several commercial DVDs as well (including *Grosse Pointe Blank* and "Remember The Titans*), and it stays there for the entire movie length. That's f*cked up. Philips says there's no way to remove it.
So, if you don't care about random icons on your screen, and you don't care which song is playing, this player is for you. |

Most of the DVD brands works just fine with this player (I've tried Memorex, Fuji, Imation, Sony+/-) as well as many CD brands (Memorex, Imation, Sony, TDK, PNY, CompUSA, other no-names, 800 MB CD, and overburned CD etc).
I don't have too many problems with this DVD player except the fact that it does not recognizes subtitles and menus in SVCD mode.
In order to test the SVCD menus and subtitles, I used the CD images recommended on this site. I have also tried it with my home made SVCD where the subtitles were added to the video stream using WinSubMux.
Neither CVD nor SVCD subs are supported by this player. I have even a SVCD created with DVD2SVCD by a friend, and that one does not show the subs either.
I can't complain too much though, because Philips says in the manual that supports only multiple audio tracks and no SVCD subs nor menus are supported. However, the same thing it says in the Philips DVD 724 manual but that one supports SVCD menu, CVD subs and even SVCD subs with a small trick (run for 5 minutes, pause for 30 secs, and then start again).
I wonder why Philips dropped the CVD subs support for their low-end line of DVD players (DVD 726 and DVD 727) especially that the feature existed in the previous model DVD 724 and worked pretty well.
I'm disappointed in Philips approach, and I'm going to return this DVD tomorrow and eventually get a crappy DVD player from APEX, since it seems the only DVDs sold in US, at this moment that supports SVCD subs (in fact CVD subs).

I bought mine from Sears about 3 weeks ago for $69 and have been pretty happy with the purchase. I just happened to be in a Best Buy tonight and noticed the 726's were on clearance for $39 so I bought another one for a gift.
Pluses: Great value for price ($39!), Great picture and sound, component outs, progressive scan, plays everything I have tried (+R, +RW, -RW, all pressed DVD's), nice looking, slim, good quality build, plays ISO MPEGS with no authoring, JPEG picture player with rotate.
Minues: No FF or Rew on ISO MPEGS?, Red Light on front when power off, small non-backlit remote, no long MP3 filename support, no optical out.

| Many thanks to all who posted comments about this machine--you really helped me in deciding what DVD player to get, and I am very happy with it. I bought this a couple of days ago at Best Buy for $70 to replace my Apex AD-3201. It easily plays everything I have burned on a SONY DRU-500AX (so far DVD-R & DVD-RW on Ritek media, and DVD+RW on Verbatim media) and has a much better picture than the Apex. I especially like the multiple controls for picture brightness and contrast which really help produce a great picture on an older TV that is getting dim. (The Apex picture was much too dark, even with the "bright" turned on.) I also like the stylish look of the case, and the audio quality is excellent. My only gripes are that there seems to be no way to turn off the Macrovision (the Apex has that advantage), and the annoying red LED that comes on when the machine is off (I more or less fixed this by putting a 1/2 inch square of black electricians tape over it). Thanks again for everyone's comments! |

| Bought this one from Sears, and very happy with it. My first DVD player was a cheap Toshiba, and I regretted it. This one is definitely worth the reasonable cost. Using PowerDirector Pro and Nero v6 on NEC 1300a with firmware 1.08 to burn media. Using Memorex DVD+-/R, TDK DVD+RW, and Fuji CD-R/RW. So far, every burn has worked and is playing fine. Non-authored discs play files, but play is uneven with higher quality files. |

| I picked this up for $69.95 at Sears so I could retire my Apex 1200 that has served me well but was suffering from a slow mechanical death. In short, this is an awesome player. It plays everything my Apex 1200 and 1201 players can play. In addition, it plays nearly everything they choked on as well. The only media that the Philips would not play was a DVD-R that neither of the Apex players could play, but my old Panasonic R31 is able to handle for some reason. SVCD aspect ratio was perfect on all my rips, even the ones that were Satellite captured PAL conversions of old TV shows like Space Above and Beyond. SVCD rips that caused the Apex players to chug, played smoothly on the Philips. In addition, The 726 correctly identified a VCD 2.0 rip that was improperly formatted onto CD-R as an SVCD, and it played it perfectly. The Apex players could not handle that one! Like many of these cheaper players, the DVD drive mechanism came slightly mis-aligned, causing a bit of chaos each time the drawer was opened or closed. Opening up the case (seven screws), removing the right front mounting screw of the internal drive, and sliding a washer under the right front foot of the drive and then tightening it back down cured that issue. Quality control should have picked that one up, but it was easy to fix. The player looks great and plays everything I have fed it. The remote control is a vast improvement over the Apex 1201 shift key remote. Also, having up to 32X forward and reverse search with SVCD is really a nice feature! I am very pleased with this player and highly recommend it if you watch a lot of VCD/SVCD compilations. It is big step up from the Apex 1200 - 1201 series. |

I got it from Best Buy for $75+tax two days ago. Very nice player. It plays everything that I throw in. It even plays some lightly damaged PAL discs that my other players (APEX, GE) are having trouble playing. Great video quality. Stylish look and solidly built. Nice PAL->NTSC conversion. Region hack works perfectly.
I don't seem to be able to turn on progressive scan, maybe my cables are bad or something I did wrong. When I tried MPEG-1/2 ISO, it sat in LOAD mode but worked fine when I reinserted. It happened twice, don't know if it's a consistent problem.
It doesn't have optical audio input. As I need another DVD player with optical audio, I'm thinking of getting a 727 since I think it's just a 726 with optical.
Anyway, overall a very nice player. |

| I bought this unit because the dvd-r column was checked. It will indeed play all the disc I burned in Pinacle Studio 8 with menus, the svcds played outstandingly. DVDs(DVD-R)burned on older princo 1x that will not play anymore on my JVC XV-S500 worked flawlessly as well. However, the same DVD-r discs burned with menus in Pinacle Edition 5.1 will not move pass the Menu screen, I clicked on the Philips chat room and was politely told that "no Philips units support DVD-R", For the money $80.00 at Best Buy this is a quality unit. Just carefull about DVD-R Compatibility! |

I bought this player with some trepidation. The Philips website as well as the manual that's on the website don't have a word about DVD-R compatibility. But the player worked great on DVD-Rs that I have burnt with my Pioneer 104.
The best thing is that on some of my home-made DVD-Rs I have paper labels. This caused a major problem with other DVD players I tested (Toshiba 3900 and the Daewoo 5000). Not with the Philips!! Superb performance!
I tested the raw mpeg file feature, too. Both CD-R and DVD-R media with raw mpeg files played perfectly. The player went and located the file, showed the abbreviated file name, and played them.
For MP3s it only displays the short (8 charcter) names.
A word on pricing. I bought mine at Meijer's for $89.99, because I was too lazy to go to Best Buy where it sells for $10 less. Meijer's apparently doesn't price-match.
