I didn't see a check box to stop the installation of the Ask.com bar, but maybe that's because I use big fonts on my machine and it was buried somewhere. Fortunately, I was saved by my anti-virus program, which gave me the chance to block its installation.
That wasn't so bad. What I hated was that the program, without asking, "stole" all video associations and renamed lots of registry items (e.g. mpg File became KMPlayermpg file - or something like that).
And the de-install was anything but clean on my WinXP machine. I spent thirty minutes or so cleaning up the registry by hand.
My tests showed it to be a good player, but I can live without it. MPC and FFD show are fine for my needs, and they don't take over any associations - a practice I think is absolutely bad form. Even commercial products usually at least ask first.
By the way, my low "value-for-money" rating was low because evening though it's free, I don't want to use it.
