I just wanted to post a follow up to my own post. I read a discussion at: http://joi.ito.com/archives/2003/09/29/ ... crip7.html
and there the posters said the mmv is already an MPEG2 format, just at a higher rate (12Mbps) than what is normally on DVD (9Mbps).
I installed mplayer0.7.5, which has support for MPEG2, on my Linux Fedora Core 3 box and it was able to play it fine. I just wanted to make sure that the mmv format is playable by something other than Quicktime with a weirdo Sony supplied plugin, so now I can rest easy knowing that I will be able to watch my video clips on my computer for a long time to come.
I also noticed that one can buy a MPEG2 plugin for Quicktime. Don't know if that will do the trick also.
