Easy to use, all the standard options, easy install, quick use. Each option is briefly explained. Looks nices, too.

After much tinkering with the settings, I found XMPEG to be a very competent transcoder. It took me a couple of evenings to find the best settings.

I used the following steps to create a 2 disc SVCD from a 100min film in 16:9 aspect...

*DVD DECRYPTER on file mode to rip my target DVD to my Hard drive.

*XMPEG with Variable Bit Rate (VBR) set at 2,000 Kbits (2000000) for Max, Min and Avg and Audio sample rate same as input and 384Kbps. I let the audio remain at it's highest quality because my previous experiments had lead to poor sound. I selected the ranges to transcode and did it in 2 halves.

*NERO to create the finished discs. NERO correctly warned me that my audio for each file was non-compliant for the SVCD standard, so I let it re-encode the audio. Doing the audio this way meant audio quality very good. There may be a proper way to re-encode sound with XMPEG, but my many trial attempts suggested not.

The resulting 2 disc SVCD was of very good quality.

XMPEG certainly requires experimentation to achieve the best results. The settings I've post here produced great results. Whether these are ideal settings for your conversions, only you can decide.

Until you or I can afford a DVD burner; XMPEG offers a great, if not always easy, way to produce quality SVCD from your DVD rips.

Excellent, a great improvement from previous versions. The only encoder program I know of that natively supports multipass DivX/XviD encoding (not via job control).
