Smart Converter 2.0
The past 12 months has seen us work on major upgrades in the Windows area, bringing both apps up to speed on Windows 10.
The new versions of the apps are fully compliant with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. We've dropped Windows XP support, but at 13 years old, its time to let it go.
Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro for Windows now contain all the features of their Mac counterparts.
Smart Converter Pro
Smart Converter Pro for Windows now includes all the super-popular features from the Mac, including Movie and TV Show metadata lookup, subtitle support and more.
Smart Converter Pro also received the Shedworx conversion engine upgrade, bringing support for H.265, the new HD video streaming codec. H.265 is the codec behind 4K video.
The Free Smart Converter also received the Shedworx conversion engine upgrade so it too can now handle H.265 video.
Universal Windows Platform
The next big thing for our Windows apps is the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). UWP is common runtime environment for all Windows platforms (e.g. Desktop, Mobile, Xbox, etc) that lets a Windows app run on all Windows 10 platforms. UWP will also be the core of the long-overdue Windows app store. By the end of the year Microsoft should have their Windows 10 desktop app store up and running.
We've made a number of changes to our Windows apps to prepare them for UWP and the Windows app store.
We'll be keeping a close eye on UWP and Windows app store developments though 2016 and plan to be on the new store very early on.
Smart Converter 2.2.3 Mac
The last 12 months have been a busy time at Shedworx as we put together some serious upgrades to the Smart Converter product range.
First up was a major upgrade to the conversion engine that powers Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro.
Most of this was behind the scenes work and we now have support for H.265, the new and improved HD streaming video codec, and significantly improved subtitle support.
We've also tweaked a few of the audio settings make various format conversions work a whole lot better for Apple Devices.
Finally, we've updated the output device profiles to include all the new Apple Devices and set up defaults (e.g. iPhone) to cover off the most popular new phones.
Smart Converter 2.0.2
Smart Converter updated for Mavericks
Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro are now updated for Mavericks and available from the Mac App Store and Shedworx.com.
Smart Converter Pro was misbehaving a little under OS X 10.9, mainly with Folder Monitoring being unreliable.
We've now re-built both apps for Mavericks and everything is now back running nicely!
OS X Support
Smart Converter continues to work for OS X 10.6 (64 bit) all the way through to OS X 10.9.
We're working on updates to the full Shedworx product line now. This includes Sandboxing some of the older HD video apps, so will take a little while!
Smart Converter 2.0
Smart Converter Pro 2 is now live on the Mac App Store and Shedworx.com!
A Big Launch...
We had a big launch last weekend which saw Smart Converter Pro 2 rocket to number 20 on the overall top grossing list on the Mac App Store in the US, beating out top performers such as iMovie, Evernote and Coda, just to name a few.
Smart Converter Pro 2 now includes all the important features that have been asked for over the past two years by our fantastic customers.
We took our time in deciding which features to add and how to add them so that Smart Converter Pro would retain its superb ease of use, while giving you access to these highly sought-after features.
Wherever possible we've made the new features "just work" so that you don't have to think about it.
Movie and TV Show info
A great example is the Movie and TV Show information. We now look these up automatically and update the video files on the fly so that by the time they arrive in iTunes, they are fully updated with metadata and artwork!
Subtitles and Multiple Audio Tracks
The same goes with audio tracks and subtitles. If you do nothing, these now all come though to the converted video. If you need to change what is going thorough, you can easily remove unnecessary audio tracks and subtitles, and even look up subtitles in any language from online subtitle services, all from within Smart Converter Pro 2.
The last big thing in Smart Converter Pro 2 is folder monitoring. This allows you to tell Smart Converter Pro 2 to monitor any number of folders, and tell it what to do with videos that it finds in each folder. For each folder you can decide what type of conversion is to take place and where to put the converted video.
Smart Converter Pro 2 also includes auto-updating on the Shedworx version so that you will always be up to date.
The combination of these new features makes Smart Converter Pro 2 the killer app for video converting on the Mac. We created the video converter that we always wanted and now we can't live without it.
Smart Converter 1.5.1
Submitted by justin on Wed, 23/01/2013 - 06:11
Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro 1.5.1 are now live on the Mac App Store.
This has been the first update for a while, mainly due to Apple's new "sandboxing" requirements.
Sandboxing is where the apps have to work with a "sandbox" and work within quite tight rules about what they can and cannot do. Sandboxing prevents apps from "going rouge" and destroying your system, either by mistake or design (i.e. viruses, spyware, etc).
So sandboxing is all about security, and we're finally there!
Version 1.5.1 of both Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro also brings a number of conversion fixes and improvements, including:
Better Quicktime support - we're handling all Quicktime files better now, so we don't expect to have any conversion problems from Quicktime formats now. This includes Apple Intermediate Codec, the video editing format used by iMovie, so Smart Converter can now easily handle AIC movies exported from iMovie and convert them as required.
Numerous format fixes - its been 5 months since we released version 1.4.3 on the Mac App Store and in the meantime we've made a lot of fixes and been releasing them on Shedworx only. These fixes now all come to the Mac App Store.
Internal software fixes - these don't affect you directly, but Smart Converter is now tuned up and running better under the hood.
Smart Converter for Windows 1.1.0
Submitted by justin on Fri, 07/12/2012 - 10:18
Smart Converter for Windows has had a great start under the Windows Store.
97% of our Smart Converter downloads are for Windows8, so we're quickly becoming the go-to video converter for Windows!
This update covers Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro. We've done the following things:
Updated the presets - based on feedback from a huge number of users, we have updated the key presets. The first (and most popular) presets are now Windows, followed by Xbox
Super-fast conversions for Windows - again, based on user feedback we've optimised the Windows preset to be super-fast. If you are converting MKV or similar high definition videos, your Windows conversions will now fly along at up to 100x the speed of previous versions!
Auto-updates - We've added an auto-update feature to keep you up to date with the latest version of Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro. Just enable this when prompted and Smart Converter will keep itself up to date with the latest version.
Smart Converter for Windows out now

Smart Converter is now available for Windows!
Download the new Windows version here.
We've been working on the Windows version of Smart Converter since the start of 2012, and after an extended Beta testing phase, it's ready to go!
Smart Converter for Windows works perfectly on Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
We've also been going through the new Windows Store certification process and just yesterday, Smart Converter was listed on the Windows Store, ready for the Windows 8 launch on Friday 26 October.
Smart Converter for Windows includes all the smarts from Smart Converter for Mac, which has been holding down the number one video converter spot on the Mac App Store for over a year now.
Smart Converter Pro 1.4.3
Submitted by justin on Sat, 07/04/2012 - 20:00
Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro version 1.4.3 are now available on the Mac App Store and shedworx.com.
This updates brings in support for the Apple TV 2, the iPad 3 and iPhone 4.
The new presets for Apple TV and iPad support video up to 1080p with higher bit rates.
We have left the main presets (the ones on the main Smart Converter window) at lower settings because you really can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p, especially on an iPad.
The new high resolution settings can be found under the 'Other' menu.
Smart Converter - Turbo Charged
Submitted by justin on Thu, 23/02/2012 - 14:26
We've hit the Turbo button on Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro!
The 'smarts' behind Smart Converter mean that we often don't need to convert a video when going from one format to another. This gives you lightning fast conversions.
For times when we can't do a 'smart' conversion, we have to do things the regular way, which can take a while.
Up until now Smart Converter only used one core of your CPU in regular mode. Now Smart Converter and Smart Converter Pro use all cores of your CPU. With all new Macs now shipping with Quad Core CPUs, multi-core processing means that Smart Converter will go at least 4 times as fast for regular conversions.
This update also includes a few bug fixes and a re-vamp of the way we handle Flash Video conversions. Any problems you might have had with flv video will now be fixed.
