i am a real newbie to making DVDs :roll
i have a 1 gig athon 512 MB RAM WIN me computer witha botu 10 gig free on the hard drive ( 40gb total)
i have a sony external USB DRX- 510UL DVD 4X dvd+/-RW burner for my pc
i have a bunch of DVD+R's and a few DVD+rws
i am trying to transfer all my vhs tapes to dvd format but i discovered that the most u can fit it only 2-4 hrs MAX on a 4.7 gig
i know u can store more on certain DVD- RAM but they are like over 15 bucks a pop now! which isnt cost effective. i could go buy the original movies for that price, and i dont think my DVD burner i just bought will copy data to them( expecially the 8GB DVD-RAMs
i have heard u can put at least 6 hours or so of video /audio onto a DVD in VCD format or DVD-VCD i think
i have a video capture device for pc to transfer all my vhs tapes to my computer in a MPEG 1 or 2 format. i know how to do that already
but putting them onto a dvd in vcd format is what has excaped me.
i want be able to play it in a standard new player that can dvd play in my computer, and a standard new DVD player that can read VCDs,SVCDs, DVD+/-RW( i have a KOSS KD-305 player now that can do this)
i heard u can do most of the work with a program svcd2dvd ,but when i went to the website and dled the trial it already expired
can someone explain to me EXACTLY how do take a mpeg file and put it onto a DVD in vcd format and can play in a dvd player i mentioned above
( keep in mind i am a newbie and may not understand some terminology)
is there a way to use any type of freeware available to do all this?
Is there ANY product available for free or not that can do it all in 1 shot instead of using half a dozen programs to convert, author, demultiplex. etc? and have the audio be in sync and everything?( i would definitly prefer free over not) i have never dvd authored before and ive tried it and it hasnt worked already wasted a few blank DVDS. its very hard to understand
the problem is i have already read the how to guides on this website regarding that but either most the how to guides apply to software that doesnt exist anymore ( older versions) and the guides cant explain how to the new ones work. its all very confusing ,
the reason i want to put it in vcd format is becuase all my tapes are 6-8 hours FULL of movies tv shows, etc and it would be actually impractical to put them onto a 4.7 gb DVD+R at 2 hours at a time, not that i would mind viewing the clear picture in dvd format but lack of space makes it too impractical for me and since the vhs tapes are already less than dvd quality why bother only putting that on a dvd at 2 hours at a time?
im trying to conserve space in house i dont want to end up with back up 100 vhs tape onto 300 dvds! with the dvds+rs at a few bucks a pop
if anyone can please help, and explain to me how i can do this in LAYMAN terms with currently programs availiable in the easiest, fastest and cheapest way i would greatly appreciate it. thanks

Provided your mpegs are already to VCD specs, the only thing you need is TMPGEnc DVD Author. It handles VCD mpegs and adjusts the audio to fit DVD specs (video already is) automatically.
/Mats -
I think I have asked this question before.

As mats.hogberg has already said, TMPGEnc DVD Author will handle a VCD file just fine so this guide is not needed.

Then just open TDA and start a new project and then use the "ADD VIDEO" button.
TDA is easy to use but you will have to experiment a little. You can use each video clip as a title or you can have one title and each clip will be a chapter, or you can have several titles with several clips in each title.
Go ahead and use TDA to burn too. It will probably work fine. I just had some trouble and went back to using Nero because I was used to it.
If you do use Nero just choose the DVD Video setting. You will have to navigate to the files made by TDA which are in your Documents and Settings/Tmpgenc DVD folder. -
ok so i need to reencode the mpeg-1 file ( i use tmpgenc plus) AGAIN to mpeg-1 ,,, but this time force it to be set to 48 k?
so im converting mpeg-1( 44k audio) to mpeg-1(48K audio), correct?
and then use dvd author? and do add video?
i have tmpgenc dvd author 1.6 now ill try that first but if somethign goes wrong ill check it out with nero
u said had some trouble with tda? well which nero can i use? and which version. i have nero burning rom 6.0
nero burning rom just says it can create an: audio cd , mixed cd, vcd, svcd, mini dvd, cd extra, cd copy, and cd-rom boot/hybrid/udf/udf-iso
and if i use any other software and after i dvd author it all and ptu ti to a folder on my pc , if i use other burner software what would i need to burn it as? just a standard DVD? or a vcd? and just put a dvd disk in my burner????
thanks. -
You don't need to re-encode the mpegs.
Just load then into TDA which will resample the audio to 48K.
Needn't worry about other people's troubles, its not yours until you encounter the same problem.
Author and burn with TDA. -
i tried to cliocl on the write dvd folder dvd rw folder button
but i got this error:
PSAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NTAllocateVirtualMemory
how to fix this problem? or if i CANT, what other burning software can i use to burn the DVD folder to the dvd+r? -
i think i found out why i get that error i believe tmpgenc 1.5 and later runs on XP
apparently windows ME doesnt totally run Tmpgenc DVD Author 1.6. well
i have windows ME so even thought i can create the dvd files i cant burn with it
does anyone know of a good free or trial burner software which will easily and properly burn my vcd files to a dvd which i created with the TDA????
thanks -

nero burning rom just says it can create an: audio cd , mixed cd, vcd, svcd, mini dvd, cd extra, cd copy, and cd-rom boot/hybrid/udf/udf-iso
Just drop the files made by TDA into the VIDEO_TS folder in Nero. -
*ahrm*
Ok, there are TWO ways to do what you want.
You can either use super-low-res DVD, which is the same resolution as VCD only with, as others have stated, a higher audio sampling rate.
OR, IF your player supports it, you can make a VCD-DVD. The best/easiest program to do this is one called ... dammit, I forget. VCD2DVDMPG+ or something like that. I tested it for the author for a while, until we realized that my Pioneer player just wasn't ever going to like those discs. But many do.
So if you already have a lot of VCD's, that program is a real timesaver, and pretty cheap to boot.
But if you are capturing the video now, just capture it at 48k like everyone said.

how do u use nero burning rom 6 for this? can someone telll me exactly what to do or do i need a nero burning dvd

i had nero burning rom 6
i upgraded to 6.3.1.2 and i still cant see the way to make a dvd with it
ther is no wizard when i start up nero burning rom
it shows u which to CD or mini dvd to make
but thats it, no dvd-video options -
Nero obviously doesn't recognize your writer - Skip Nero and use ImgTools to create image, then DVDDecrypter to burn the image. Life's too precious to fight with software that doesn't work...

I don't think it is a question of Nero not working. If Nero doesn't recognize his burner he needs to troubleshoot that. When I installed my internal DVD burner I had to get the latest firmware in order for it to be recognized. -

i got the burner 2 weeks ago from online
it was refurbished
i upgraded the firmware already
i already made an audio cd, and copied a date file to a dvd
it can read both standard cds and dvds
i figured out now to burn with nero to a dvde but got this error:

The "unspecified host adapter error" could be a lot of things. Uninstall, remove all software and drivers, re-install in correct sequence, then use software designed for the drive. The windows "cannot access" error also could be many things. Above procedure should fix it, also make sure you have Administrator rights. It also could be defective, it is a refurb, after all.
You stated you had successfully burnt a data file to a DVD. What software did you use? Suggest using same to burn.
The authoring programs will produce the correct files and structure for your VCD-DVD. Stick with what works.
Side note - MPEG-1 on DVD allows a bitrate of up to 1850. Not sure if this is mandatory. VBR usage may be allowed. 48k audio is required. These are significant deviations from VCD specs.
As mentioned, get some RW disks.
