Difference between the 500A and 500AX is purely the software that comes packaged with the drive - the hardware is identical and can use the same released firmware.

One Month of using. About 50 DVD+R & DVD-R... That's OK! It's PERFECT!!! For Ripping at speed over 2x format your Hard Disk as FAT32 not as NTFS. NTFS is slower than FAT32. The problem is in your Hard Disk not in the SONY DRU500AX.

Works fine with PAL and NTSC. I like it so far :)

Overall a good drive that handles the major formats.
Comes with a decent software bundle.

I wouldn't suggest ripping from the drive though.
It limits DVD Read speeds to only 2x when ripping Movies..
I haven't figured out a way to get around it, other than using a regular dvd rom drive.

Was kindy picky with the media at first, I bought some cheapo's with it and ended up failing during some Media on the finalizing part. They still worked out okay, so i'm not sure how much of a problem it is yet.

If someone knows how to get around the 2x read RIP speeds, please email me and let me know.

Dominic. I have an Asus MB and a GeForce 2 video card and it works well for me. I also have put my drive in a firewire enclosure and it work great for me. I have made only 2 or 3 coaster out of about 25 dvd's burned and that was not because of the burner. I am also using Comp USA cheap media and it works like a charm. I love this drive. So Glad I got it.

Just got my DRU500AX. Works just as aspected, excellent. I have used Ritek 4x media and Ritek 1x media. It is only documented that the original DRU500's will burn the 1x media at 2x, however --- my DRU500AX has the original firmware and by default burns the 1x Ritek media at 2x.

MAKES this drive an even greater purchase. Highly recommend this to anyone thinking of purchasing a dvd burner in the near future - you can't go wrong with this drive.

My DRU500AX was working quite well with the 2.c firmware: some trouble burning CDs (but i guess that was because of the low quality of the media) and great with DVDs where i burned 4X medias without any problem. Unfortunately I was stupid enough to check SONY site and upgrade to 2.e firmware which is causing me any sort of problems. After "succesfully" updating the firmware, XP rebooted 6 times and each time couldn't recognize the "new" DVD so it re-started and during the scandisk, truncated few precious files. At the 7th time it finally recognized the DRU but still now when i burn a media, sometimes the drive doesn't eject the disk, XP freezes and the only way is to re-start the PC (again scandisk and again files truncated...). I emailed SONY support for help before upgrading to 2.f or reverting to 2.c but still waiting.
I wish you better luck if you are thinking to upgrade your firmware!

I love this Drive. I've had it for about 3 weeks and made about 25 DVD's, NO COASTERS! I've copied about 10 DVD's with DVD X Copy, they work perfect. I transfered 2 VHS movies to DVD with the included "My DVD" program. I chose the direct to Disc setting, added my title, selected chapters every 10 minutes, set it to only capture the running time of the movie. I then pushed the record button left it overnight and in the morning I had a DVD copy of my favorite movie with moving chapter points, automaticly!
I also backed up my computer before reformating it, it's like having extra 4.7GB hard drives!

My only complaints are not with the drive or the software, it's simply the time it takes to render the mpeg files. I have a 1.8GH Pentium 4, I captured an hour and a half movie in the "DVD" format and it still took about 5 hours to rerender and burn. I'm sure there is an easier way that I haven't found yet, but come on!
Secondly, I bought this multi format Sony drive because I wanted to be the most compatable for my clients. I also heard that DVD-R was cheaper...WRONG! +R & -R are the same price, and I've found it harder to find -R, I haven't even tried one yet! I think +R is winning the format war, so I think I could have saved about $160 and just bought the +R drive.
That said, I still love this Sony Drive. DVD is FUN!

This is my first DVD burner, so I do not have anything to compare with. The burner works without any problem. It's GREAT! I have tryed many different media (both DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. Sheep as expencive. All work prefect (but the shepp does not alway work in my Stand alone DVD Player, but well in other Computers.

The bundled software works as well, but with out no suprise. I will give it 10, but 2 minus for the extrem long delivery time.

I just purchased the 500AX and tried it out over the weekend. I downloaded DVDxCOPY so I could ARCHIVE my collection of DVDs. IT WORKED GREAT!!! I was able to backup 7 out of 7 DVDs so far. I'm not new to PCs (I've been building and messing w/ PCs for years) but I am new to DVD Recording and I have to say this drive makes me glad I decided to get into DVD Recording. I do have one question....

1) I updated my firmware, yet when I go into device manager the drive still shows as a DRU500A not DRU500AX. Is this normal or do I need to run the upgrade again?

2) What is the best and least expensive media to use with this drive?

3) What's the best software for ARCHIVING my XBOX and PlayStation games (I just want to back them up to protect my investment)?

P.S. I would like to thank DVDRHELP.COM and everyone who takes their time to post helpful advice. I will continue to be a loyal visitor to this site.

Burned my first DVD on a memorex dvd-r (which I see has bad comments listed) with this DVD burner (which also has bad comments listed) on my HP Pavillion w/ 686 P3 & 192 SDRAM (before I built my new one with P4 2.53 & 512 PC2700 DDR, which i have yet to try it on) and works perfectly on my crappy old GE DVD player, but did not work on a brand new Apex 1110. I just had weird luck I guess.

Asus A7A DDR, Nvidia GeForce Ultra 64DDR, 256RAM, WIN XP.
The Burner does not work properly when in DMA mode, it plays very choppy. In POI mode it works fine. These settings can be found in device manager. I have switched from master to slave on the secondary with different errors. If you read through this list you will see 2 other people with similar problems. The two things in common we have are the athlon boards, and geforce 2 video cards. Can anyone verify that their sony works with a Asus a7a ddr board, and Geforce 2 card.

Thanks,
Dominic

Great Drive! Works perfect. I only had an hour to “play”, but I managed to install it and burn 2 full DVD+RW’s!
I popped it in my 1.8 MHz computer and WinXP recognized it immediately, I didn’t even un-wrap the Sony software. I used Roxio EZ CD & DVD 6 to make straight copies of 2 movies. First I tried a 2 hour movie with Sony recommended Verbatim 2.4X DVD+RW, took 20 minute. At the end of the burn a big red X and error messages! I tried the disk in my stand alone Sony player and it worked perfect! Next I tried coping a Adult DVD with menus, links, photo…the guy at Best Buy said it wouldn’t work, but it did! I used the included Sony DVD+RW this time… 20 min and I still got the red X and the error messages, but I blame the fact that my copy of EZ CD 6 is pirated. The copied DVD worked perfect, menus, chapters, photos and of course the FBI warning. HA! Best Buy guy!

I have a DRU500AX (direct from Sony) that I am getting random write errors. This occurs with Memorex DVD-R disks and looks like it happens around the same location (1/3 of the disk) each time.

I recently upgraded the firmware from version C to E but the problem still exists.

The drive has been writing fine to +RW disks.

Had 500AX for about a week. PC Abit KT7 running 2 * Seagate Barracudas 20Gb in RAID & 1 Seagate 80 Gb, 755MB SDRAM, AMD 1Ghz processor. Also have Zoom wireless network card in PC.....the Sony 500AX did cause a problem with this after I re-formatted and re-installed XP... the prpblem seems to be down to a file called netcw2k.inf, XP installs this file in an odd location in System32/Drivers/cdburners (or something like that) when the DVD writer is in the machine ..this prevents the wireless network card from starting (3 re-formats later with my machine getting emptier & emptier..out came the Firewire card, Ethernet Card and finally DVD writer....) on the 3rd re-format & re-install got the Wireless Lan up and running, then re-installed the DVD writer & other bits I'd pulled out and all was well. (Just thought I'd pass that on in case anybody else is going through the pain)....that aside ...MyDVD didnt work....took ages to render & compile (10hrs for a 20min video) so dumped that...so my process...and it seems to work well (any advice appreciated) ...capture video from DV Camcorder & Edit movie with Pinnacle Studio 7 (Studio 8 is buggy as hell)..sometimes use Adobe Prem 6.5 (but not really up to speed with this software yet)...render to MPEG 2 with Pinnacle Stusio 7. Add Menus etc & compile DVD with Sonics DVDit....finally burn with Nero. Works great and quicky (Pinnacle ttok 10HRs to render & compile and then crashed..MyDVD just crashes)....

No toasters (using HP DVD-RW & Datasafe DVD+R)...

Cant compare it to anything else as this is my first machine ..but apart from the niggles above am well happy with the product..DVD's play fine on my Thompson set top box and picture/sound quality are excellent.......I,m gonna give it 8/10 cause the bundled software sucks, for the writer alone would give it 10/10 so far .....Oh & VLA quite happily co-exists with Nero on my machine.

Some info that I experienced myself with this drive:
1. Do not upgrade to firmware v2.0e it will reduce your write speed!
2. There is no easy way of downgrading this firmware to original v2.0c
3. With the original firmware I was able to burn at 4x on media not certified for 4x like CompUSA DVD-R and Memorex
4. If you got errors while burning try enabling DMA setting in "Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" for both Primary and Secondary

Hope it helps,
Happy burning!

3 DVD-R failures out of 3 attempts using bundled software Sonic's MyDVD. Windows XP Pro, P4 2.53 GHz, 1Gb memory, no services running, DRU500AX is on IDE-1 alone as a master. The errors are all the same "Write Error". Using Memorex DVD-R disks. After first two failures with -R disks under firmware version C, upgraded to firmware version E. Exact same failure at the exact same place (19:00 minutes) on the disk in the 3rd -R attempt.

Bought Memorex DVD-RW disks, tried using MyDVD again with exact same AVI file and project and it worked perfectly.

No idea yet why the DVD burns fail on DVD-R media but has success on -RW media. Have yet to test the +R/+RW media.

Wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with DVD-R on the DRU500AX.

Will be testing other software with the same -R disks... let you know results.

Just purchased this Sony DRU-500AX abd installed it . System is AMD Athalon XP 1600, 640M DDR Ram, 40G Seagate 7200RPM Hard drive, 60G Matrox 5400RPM Hard Drive, Samsung 16X DVD Rom, Savage intgrated video, Windows XP Home Edition.

Have used DVD X Copy to back up several of my DVD's using DVD -R's, the media was just a geneirc brand , but 500AX recorded at4X speed and worked great.

Used the included DVD Record Now (authoring software) , burnt several still pictures from Olympus Camera files to DVD-RW disks, again all worked just great.

Very, very incredibly fully satisfied with this drive (DRU-500AX) I did not upgraded my firmware to 1.f yet, but don't have any 4x medias.
After 2 days of use and 20dvd/cd burner not any coaster.
It is a very silent drive.
I have try to burn cd in 24x no problems.
DVD-R and DVD-RW works perfectly in my SONY 7700.

Bye,bye Pioneer A03 very good drive used for 1 year, but I needed DVD-RW for my SONY 7700.

This is my second DRU (I had the DRU-500A but my friend bought it from me when I found out the AX was coming out [he bought it at the price I paid so that was a deal]). After using both of these to a good extent (backing up games and dvd's) I must say it is incredibly good! The DRU500A & AX are both superb. I have had a couple of coasters but that was media problems (bought a spindel of 50 ritek and 2 didnt work). Aside from this everything else has burned wonderfully and I am very happy with this.
