Hi,
The drive finally arrived in Greece three weeks ago. I got mine for 370 Euros. No problems so far, only one coaster when I tried to copy a DVD on the fly and both drives where on the same IDE cable! I have tried several discs and even the cheapest write at 2x speed and play fine in my SONY 305 DVD player. I think this is the best drive you can buy.

Have had this drive for about 3 weeks and no problems. Have made about 25+ backups without a single coaster. Used couple of different brands(fuji, verbatim, hp, memorex, +r) with no problems and they play fine on my Samsung N2000, Toshiba 3109.
I use DVDecrpyter and Instant Copy. Very easy.

Only problem i've had is MySonic that came with it will not run and they won't answer my email!! finally gave up.

I can't beleave that people have problems with this drive. I bolted it in and hooked up the power and the ide cable and have never had a problem. I record cd's at 24x with no problems using Nero 5.5.10.0. I use printable cd's and dvd's from all media outlet, I have a ez/cd printer I love, the dvd's are 1x purple Lead Data DVD-R ($1.26 each) and it records at 2x with no problems. I use DVD Decrpter for copying DVD 5 movies (ISO) and use DVD Decrpter to rip files (File Mode) and Pinnacle Instant Copy to resize them and put on 1 DVD (and it still looks and sounds great). I use the great guides on this site http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php
and have hade no problems.
I have a friend that has the Pioneer A05 and it dosen't compare to my Sony DRU500AX.

i got this a wk. ago w/ version 2.0c out of the box. manufacture date is feb 02, 2003, and so far i've burned to two different dvd+rw brands (sony and verbatim) and princo dvd-r w/o any probs. however, i decided to check the capability of the drive as a cd burner, and it's slow. i've tried both cloneCD and the latest nero 5.5.10.15 and it won't write faster than 16X (on 32X media) even straight from the HD, and it keeps running low on buffer. both drives are set on dma. i replaced my lite-on 16x dvd-rom w/ this sony, and left my lite-on 48x burner as slave.

when i put the source disc in the sony, and a blank in the lite-on i thought things should be pretty much back to normal. but then i realized the sony has slow read speeds too. (my two lite-ons together used to do really fast on-the-fly copies).

i understand there might be other variables i.e. media brand, etc.

i don't mind sacrificing a little extra time to have this all-in-one sony burner. for what i got the dvd burner for, it serves its purpose well. although i must admit, i had slightly higher expectations w/ its compatibility and read and write speeds with cdrs.

the princos played in my panasonic cv50, apex 1100w and 5131, and a friends mitsubishi 6020. they were burned w/ instantcopy, and the +rw discs were burned w/ moviefactory 2 and instancopy - but the mitsu and panasonic didn't read the +rw. apex reads everything.

This Burner Rock's. I'm a vary happy camper with this drive. Work's with everything I throw at it. No coasters out of the 100 DVD's and CD's I have burned. This is a Awsome drive. It has to be the fastest DVD burner out there right now.Plus it work's with all of the software
that I have. Nero 5.5,Easy CD5. Norton Ghost 2003,and DVD copysoftware
I didn't waste my money on any Microsoft XP Crap, and don't plan to. I use 9x and Win2K and everything work's great. I couldn't be happier with a DVD Burner. I recommend this Drive to anyone.

Got one last week. Am I UNhappy!
It burns DVD+RW with no problem but DVD-RW I can not get it to work.
I always receive an error when I try to burn or erase a DVD-RW or DVD-R (with various disks).
My old Pionner a04 DVD Burner did the same job and
was much cheaper and better !!

Bought a DRU500A (380€) in january in exchange for a Philips 228K. Used it on a system with Athlon 1.4 and windows 98se.Problems galore, would not burn with Nero etc. My standalone Philips 950 would only accept +RW if and when I succeeded in copying one of my own DVD's.
Before throwing everything out I upgraded the firmware to "g", invested in windows XP, cleaned up my system.
It works like a charm now with every program I tried, Nero works as it should, my standalone reads everything from +/-R and +/-RW burned with Nero(latestversion). I use Traxdata RW (4€),Datawrite or Infinity +/-R (2€), and also TDK and Philips (much more expensive)but it burns about everything I feed it.
I think this is an excellent writer if you invest in the right software and operating system, and now it does everything I expected it to do. (of course cd/cdrw is no problem at all).
I hope those of you who are having problems can learn something of my solutions.
Walter.

Ordered my DRU500AX from Fry's Outpost (www.outpost.com) for $299 on Friday morning, had the burner on Saturday afternoon. (US orders only, I think.) Installed it as the slave behind my CD writer on the second IDE cable, no problems. Burned an SVCD on a rewriteable, no problem. Burned a DVD downloaded from the newsgroups, no problem. "Ripped" a rental DVD using DVDecrypter - got a couple of error messages on each VOB (I/O error, region error) but cancelled out of them and it ripped just fine. Burned just fine using NERO 5.5.10.15 and Memorex -RW media. Haven't tried +RW yet (my standalone likes -RW according to the excellent resources here) and haven't found any -R discs to buy locally - will order some and give those a shot. All in all, very pleased!!

can anybody please tell me what dvd-r media they are using for this drive as i have used superior dvd 2x G.4 & think i'm gonna go into business selling coasters. Been told that it's the media as i also have sony dvd+rw that came with drive & no probs at all

Received the DRU500AX two weeks ago. No problems with installation. Purchased some "demo packs" from Allmedia (16 DVD-Rs, 4 DVD+Rs, and 2 DVD+RWs). Of the 20 write-once DVDs, I've had 2 coasters (1 Ritex G03, 1 Ritek G04), both using Nero. Since then, I've purchased and burned additional DVD-Rs--no coasters, using either Nero or RecordNow DX. I've also used the RWs extensively, probably 75 burns using the same burning software as well as Movie Factory 2--all successful. I have 3 DVD players, an Apex 1500, Apex 1100W, and and old Pioneer 414. The Apex units play everything great while the Pioneer only plays the -Rs and +Rs. It doesn't like the +RW's. All in all, a great drive. Would recommend highly.

Bought mine from sony.com in mid-January as a 500a, but have now upgraded to both 1.0f and lately 1.0g firmware. I love it, and with the exception of some peculiar incidents while using Roxio's CD & DVD Creator 6, all has been well (I can make a DVD with really nice menus, but it won't play in my home theatre DVD player... the same disc created with Sonic's MyDVD plays just fine... I'm baffled.)

Installation went off completely without a hickup, and its worked cherry.

For any other folks out there who happen to live in the Great White North, you don't need to pay those rip off prices of $10 CDN for a DVD-R blank at Future Shop or the like. With the help of some folks in a newsgroup, I located an excellent outfit called www.shop4tech.com. They ship to Canada, and you can get workable DVD-R media for as low as $0.69 per disc US. When you're starting out with a new piece of hardware, its not uncommon to make a few coasters... and at $1.20 CDN it's no where nearly as painful as taking the $10 bite!

after waiting for weeks for a 500A to come through a friend at Sony, I found a 500AX at Best Buy and grabbed it ($349... same price as the 500A).

so far so good, I've burned 8 discs, using

Nero 5.5.10.0
DVD Decryptor

All DVD Decryptor burns have been perfect, even though they shouldn't work as I'm using WinME and the files split at 4Gb! They still burn fine with the .iso read / write.

The Nero burns have been fine, I burned one coaster with Nero, checked the forums here and found the UDF 1.02 trick, burned the same material with that method and everything worked fine.

Date of manufature on the drive is Feb. 2003.

The only drag is I haven't been able to get a 4x burn, but I also haven't got my hands on any 4x media yet.

But overall, I'm very happy with this drive.

system specs - Asus A7V motherboard / 256Mb Ram / DRU500AX is the master on the secondary IDE channel.

Got one last friday. Am I happy ? No !
Why ? It burns DVD+RW (Platinum) with no problem
but DVD-RW I can not get it to work. I always
receive an error when I try to burn or erase
a DVD-RW (Intenso). Bought some DVD-R (Verbatim),
but the same error.
I am really frustrated with this drive. My old
Philips DVD Burner did the same job (DVD+RW) and
was much cheaper and better !!

Stock has arrived in UK !!

Very good drive, no problems with the install, or the software.

Burned three movies from a DVD-R I already have onto Mirror DVD-R using Nero 5.5.
Works fine with Hitachi DVP250E.

Just wish it was black and silver, not that nasty biege !

Good Luck

The sony dru500a and dru500ax are exactly the same drives except for the ax has the new firmware to burn dvd+r at 4 x. The drive is the best one on the market. I work for circuit city and own a dru500a and a dru500ax on two different machines. They both work fine with nero, and dvd x copy. i have used other software too, the best for dvd back ups is dvd x copy, it is a little tricky at first but after you get used to it, it is so easy. The back order problems are happening with the 500a because sony no longer makes it, so if anyone has one on back order tell them that you want the 500ax. best wishes to those who are trying to find it.

Fantastic, worked first time.
Sonic MyDVD produced perfect video DVDs from my DV digital handycam at great quality, moving menus, live snippets of video footage in the menus, all worked. Even recorded to Sony DVD+RW disk and had it play back perfectly in my TV set-top DVD player.

Recorded 4.7 GB data disk (DVD+RW again) which formatted and recorded in 21 minutes, but then took another 21 minutes to verify. Not sure if the verify step is needed or can be turned off.

Now need to try modifying a DVD video disk without a full erase and re-write. Anyone done this?

OK, now I have tried more media, burns DVD-R at 2X, tried Ritek DVD-R 4X, only burns at 2X. I cannot figure this out. No problems other than this on any media tried. No coasters at all.

Had this for almost a week now, followed some outstanding guides here, i've used so far the following combinations

DVD+R Media all recorded at 2.4x or Max settings
Imation DVD+R(3)
Verbatim DVD+R(6)

Programs
DVDDecryptor
DVD2ONE
DVDXCOPY

Movies DVD-5 and DVD-9

System
Pentium 4 1.4Ghz
PC800 768MB Ram
Windows XP Pro - SP1
and at least 30 gigs of free space..if even that =]

On the drive itself it says manufactured January 2003. Got this baby at comp usa with the 2 year warranty thru comp usa. So far no coasters, all work so far on my Apex 5131 and 703A flawlesly

I ordered the 500A from Gateway when all else failed (it was supposed to be a Christmas present but was out of stock everywhere including Sony's own site.) Several weeks ago Gateway called and said the 500A had been discontinued and they wouldn't be getting any more in stock so I cancelled my order. Then a couple weeks back I was at Best Buy and stumbled upon the 500AX and proceeded to snatch it up with great haste.

Since then I've burned three discs of the Harry Potter: COS DVDR Screener. The first was burnt using the latest version of Nero and Memorex Single Sided 2.4x DVD+RW from the yellow 10 pack. It worked perfectly. The second was burnt using a Memorex Single Sided Version 2.0 2x DVD-R with the latest version of Nero and produced a coaster near the very end...most unfortunate considering it had done so fine through most of the movie. Finally, I burnt one more copy using a Verbatim DVD+R from the 5 pack Premium Quality jewel case pack at 2.4x and it turned out perfectly as well.

All were played using WinDVD, PowerDVD, Interactual and the Sony DVP-S560D.

Thus, I'm writing the second disc off as a freak occurrence/faulty media and all early indications are that I will enjoy this drive immensely.

I just purshased at Circuit city.
Installed and works fine.
So far I burned ond music CD. (EZCD extracter)
Two movies on Ritek G3 2x and Princo 1x both worked great.(Nero)
Running on Windows XP Pro with SP1.
Amd Athlon 1.4 GHz with 384 meg ram and 60 gig free HD space.
So far would strong recommend this drive. Will try
4x burning when prices drop a bit on the 4x media.
Will also be testing with DVDXcopy later next week.

BTW if you want the drive and dont want to have to wait months for it to be shipped due to back orders out the wazoo, I got mine from Sony.com, O ya it was $380 with shipping, they only sent me 1 black 1xdvd+rw disk, but i got the drive in under 2 weeks from day ordered to day received, and ups took longer to deliver it then it took for my backorder. I dont know were people get the 299$ price from but i would beware, my friend ordered a DRU-500A last oct. and he still is on back order... thats why i ordered direct from sony. I paid the price but got the goods fast.

ok here is your answer. The DRU-500AX is just a repacked DRU-500A, that has been upgraded to the newst firmware. There is no differance in the drive from what i have been told. But the firmware makes it so you can burn 4x dvd+r instead of 2.4x. If you got the DRU-500a just get the firmware upgrade, otherwise get the DRU-500AX its the same drive but its packed ready to burn at 4x on dvd+r media
