After a year, mine somehow has decided not to read nor write cd's. Dvd burning is OK. Anybody knows why?

I too have had this writer for many months and highly enjoy it. I just updated with the latest firmware. I'm actually wishing I hadn't... I was able to burn at 12x on 8x media, in Nero. I can no longer do that.

Comments posted by Bigg Russ from United States, July 14, 2005. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

I updated to the latest firmware, now nero automatically bitset my dvd+r to dvd-rom. i didn't know it could do that, till my games & movies played in my xboxes with samsung & thomson drive.

one more thing, some disc don't write at their potential speed, sometimes a 8x disc would be burnt at 4x or 6x. Even i like this drive a lot, it's going to be my last Sony burner i'm going to buy, only because i know this is the best it can get.

Firmware Upgrade Version BYX4 ?
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru710adwn.htm#dwns

I have had no problems with this Sony DRU-710a burner using BY02 firmware with the "4x media" -Maxell RICOHJPNR01-02 - Ridata RITEK-R03-02 - ETC...
I'm thinking I better update the firmware, since the media trend seems to be getting faster. I just hope the quality stays.

Comments posted by DKY55D from United States, June 24, 2005. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

I have had this writer, for a few months now and have not had any problems with it. I did, however update to the latest firmware, for it. I've used Verbatim and Sony Blank DVDs 8X and Sony CDs. All my DVDs play on both my DVD players great! It is fairly quick and does the job. I use CloneDVD software.

Before blaming the writer check to make sure the DVD media is compatible with your DVD players. Different DVD types won't play on every DVD player, which can be very frustrating.

I have a Sanyo and Phillips DVD players and they will both play Verbatim and Sony DVDs. My Brother-in-law's DVD player will not play any Verbatim DVD's, but will play the Sonys.

I think it all comes down to the DVD player one has and finding the right DVD media that will play the best on them.

SONY DVD RW DRU-710A BYX2(ATA)used with DVD Decrypter Version 3.5.4.0 and DVD Shrink Version 3.2.0.15.
I have burned 250+ disks using this drive/software combination. Media used:Memorex DVD-R 4x(ProdiscS03), Memorex DVD-R 8x(CMC,MAG.AE1), TDK DVD-R 8x(TTG02) Maxell DVD-R 8x(MXL RG03), Memorex DVD+RW 4x(INFODISC-A10-01) Sony DVD-R 8x(SONY08D1) and more including the CD-R and CD-RW disks from multiple manufacturers. I have burned a grand total of 2 bad disks and those were due to my error. I use Nero Burning ROM version 6.3.1.19 only for CD-R and CD-RW burning.
Other software:Adaptec ASPI driver for NT version 4.71.1.0,
Windows XP Pro 5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600
Other hardware: Homemade box with
CPU :AMD Athlon XP 1800+ @1612 MHz
Bus Speed :140 MHz
Motherboard :ASUSTeK <A7M266>
BIOS :Award ASUS A7M266 ACPI BIOS Revision 1007
Memory :512 MB
I think if you have any problems with this or any drive I would check your software and/or drivers first, because we all know how the powers that be like to see what they can do with the new OS updates and limit us in what we can and can't do with our hardware, unless it is due to a manufacturer defect.

I just want to say this to me is a great dvd burner. I have had no problems with this dvd burner. I also would like to say the brner is pretty good with the media selection though I have found that memores dvd- and + r 8X dvd work the best. I work for an electronic retailer and i can find them at pretty reasonable prices. I was very pleased with this burner and at my retailer i really like to sell this product to my customers. The are very pleased with the hassel free burner. the software Nero Kicks also. Great product really recomd.

Bought this unit a month ago as a supplier "run-out" Had a a lot of problems getting it to write at more than 1x speed. Found problem was with secondary IDE cable so changed to 80 conductor and forced BIOS to UDMA. Now runs at 8X okay. Discs Imation 8x-R wont play in my Samsung DVD while those done with my other Sony DRU510U run okay. +RW run okay. Now RW discs are so cheap will use those in future.

This unit is actually a Lite-On 1633, or is the Lite-On a Sony? Had I known this I wouldn't have bought it. Sony has been good up until now but I probably will steer clear in the future.

Firmware BYX3 is available for this drive. I've been running for a month and a half and never had one refusal to read or bad writes. All my backups are checked for bad sectors using DVD Info. And I've done a LOT of backups. Using Nero to back up a DVD does take a lot of time. I use DVDShrink to rip and burn and it's very fast

This 710A worked fine for about 3 months then my pc suddenly slowed down, mainly when writing cds/DVDs the CPU usage was around 100%, after running Virus checks, adware, spyware etc I could not find the problem. Days later I ran the sony drive check program and it said my writer had a read problem, so i tried updating the firmware to the latest and it solved it, fingers crossed.
This drive is very fast !!!

Comments posted by stuzyk from United Kingdom, April 04, 2005. Rated this writer 7 of 10.

the first 3 months it worked great burning CDs and DVDs and loading songs to my iPod from CDs; but in the 4th month, in the middle of a CD burn it froze up. couldn't even close it with task manager or eject my disc. won't read any kind of cd or dvd. i have uninstalled and reloaded the driver and that didn't help.

i'm waiting to hear from sony, but not sure how much help they will be now that i am out of the 90 day warranty.

I have the OEM version of this drive. The DW22A. They're both clones of lite-on drive (as this site lists in the upper right hand corner) and they are all a POS.

If you want a drive that has alot of hacker software out there for it most of the Lite-on and Sony lite-on clones will give you many options (this drive included). However if you just want to stick a disc in; burn it; stick it in a dvd player and hit play - this is not the unit for you. That's where the 2 mass different types of reviews come into play here - it all depends on what you want to use it for.

Some report it not creating right dvd video disc with -r discs, others +r discs, some unlucky soles have none work, or some of each. Lucky for me all -R discs work fine, it's the +R that are a huge pain in the ass. I've pretty much given up with it and will just chuck the 50 pack of +r media I have and the 25 pack of +rw media I've been using and stick with -R media.

The only upside to this piece of crap is that since it's acually 3 drives (by 2 different companies) and all three can be flashed back and forth to eachother via secondary software (just don't use other drives firmware - you'll kill your drive w/o using programs like OmniFlash correctly) there is a good chance that firmware releases will continue from Sony or Lite-On for awhile longer than usual. I just hope that when I get some +R DL media it'll work fine - otherwise I'll be mass pissed.

Personally I've stopped buying all Sony products. They've all just become junky products that have the brand name and nothing else. If you're looking for a drive that'll give you no headaches pick up a Pioneer. If you want to spend alittle less but still have a good drive (and the ability to right dvd-ram) most of the LG models are nice units. I have an old 4040B 4x drive in my other computer that I bought used and has been plesently suprised by how good it is for the price.

The drive came with firmware version BYZ1, which I thought was later and probably better than the firmware up on Sony's tech support site, version BYX2. But the drive had major problems: it wouldn't even read the DVD+R discs it burnt. Since it seemed I was doing nothing but making coasters, I "upgraded" to BYX2 and found that the discs I burnt and thought were bad were actually fine.

I don't know how Sony could let something like this out the door, but with the BYX2 firmware it seems like a solid drive now.

So far, after one month, I have had no problems with this drive. I've only tried 2 different types of DVD-Rs on it (TDK 8x and Maxell 8x) and they worked greatly.

I'm a little confused on why some are bashing this drive so much. It seems to work great.

burns verbatim movie dvd-r 4x......but one thing im wondering is why it takes 1hr 15mins in nero to burn my video files(vobs, bups, ifo's)

-i hear its suppose to take like 14-16mins....i uprgrade the firmware to the latest and it still burns in the same amt of time.....oh yea ive tried a verbatim dvd+rw at 2.4x and it takes the same amount of time.....is there something im doing wrong or is there a way i can fix this

-email at mets811@yahoo.com(would be greatly appreaciated)

Here is an update from my previous post below. I bought a new DVD reader for $30 and it has no problems reading the DVD's that this Sony burner refuses to read.

My only complaint after one month of use is that it refuses to read too many pressed DVD's. Windows Explorer just reports the drive as empty. Granted some of the DVD's are a bit scuffed up but at least 2 have been brand new just out of their packaging. Yes, I flashed the firmware to BY02 as soon as I installed the drive. Thinking I'll try a swap out for another one in case I just got a lemon. Otherwise, it rips & burns DVD's like a champ.

Comments posted by jbgregg from United States, January 14, 2005. Rated this writer 6 of 10.

I think that people that are giving 10 to this writer are Sony employees.
Really bad. Do not read almost anything.
Not so much problems on burning.
Do not read even the dvds it just burned. Often do not read originals.
Installed on a IBM Intellistation.
Small improvements with the new firmware but still really bad on reading.

i have two burners and the new sony dru-710 does not read or recognize those tdk 8x +r or -r disks. i have yet to try anyother disks in it and i am using up the old disks in my i/o magic burner.

Tried several datawrite 8X dvd-r, and a good few Verbatim 2.4X DL discs using DVDShrink 3.2, DVD Decrypter and burning through the bundled NERO software, and every one was a dud. Tried in Philips DVD player and Philips DVD Recorder. Looks like someone is constantly pausing and unpausing the movie. Tried the internal and external versions and both suck big time. For info I'm running them on a Sony Vaio P4 2.8 PC.
