| Just installed this burner, actually XP did everything for me. All I needed to do was wire it in and turn the computer back on. Burned 3 disks, all played perfectly. One disk with DVDDcrypter and the other 2 with Nero. All played back sharp and clear. Did not install any of the packaged software, Sonic My DVD, Easy CD Creator (Basic, ugh) and some pinacle and Arc Soft . I have been a Nero fan for a long time. No firmware upgrades and it writes DVD R/W at 2x and DVD R at 2x, 4x right out of the box. Nero Toolbox says it has firmware version 1.30 installed. From reading some of the other comments I think I will stay away from the .80 cent disks. The Meritline and Ritex at 1.29 each seem to do the job. | Pioneer have informed me that that they DO NOT recommend Datawrite Red 4* media and commented that there are inconsistencies between batches & even within the same batch; they did not recommend what media to use. SVP Communication (UK) advise use of Ritex 4*. I would give this drive a higher rating but until such times as I can get it to burn at 4* it has to stay low. It burns all the cheap dvd-r and dvr-rw that I throw at it including the cheap Princo disk. I have had no problems playing the dvds in my Toshiba 2600 player. | Got this drive at Staples for about $150 after all the rebates, etc. and I love it. I have the latest hacked firmware and I am burning the Ritek G03's at 2x with no problems. Not too shabby for $1.20 a disk. I have burned about 70 DVD's with this burner, using Nero Express, and I haven't had a coaster yet! Can't say enough about what a great deal it was, too. | This drive is PERFECT. Usually when I buy a piece of hadware I wil install new drivers/firmware and have to tweak stuff. So I get this drive. Flash with 1.33 hacked firmware. So far burned over 10 movies and xbox games on the cheapest media there is. All work 100% on a cheapo DVD player and modded xbox. I do my burning while extracting 4Gig ISO's and when CPU is under high stress and guess what? Burner never F*ed up AWESOME BURNER. | I have had my Cendyne Pioneer A05 for about 2 months now. Why on earth would anyone want to puchase anything other than this drive? You can find it for at least $100 cheaper than the Sony, and it burn's almost anything you can throw at it. It can be cased in a firwire/usb case and become a 4 gig portable solution. | I bought this drive when they first came out in UK and have had very few problems. I've flashed the firmware twice and had no problems. I've done 100's of movies and games without any problem. I'm using Traxdata 1x when I can get hold of them and the new Bulkpaq 4x with great results. Also use Datawrite Yellows/Greys 2x/Reds 4x and haven't had any problem. | I have had this burner for a few months now using the standard 1.30 firmware. I updated the firmware today using the link provided by Richard on an earlier post (http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=12883) and have had a huge increase in read speeds & can now burn all my 2x media @ 2x. I noticed the rip speed fluctuate between 9.0 & 4.0 on a pressed DVD & assume that the changes are due to layer changes & reading the outer tracks, A 8GB dual layer disk only took me 12min to rip as opposed to 30. I fully reccomend all users update their firmware using the above link to download as it has made this unit a complete burning tool. | Just got my A05 on the weekend. Works a treat. Loaded the 1.3 hacked firmware and it records at 2x on the 1x DupEZ blanks I bought. Burnt Chamber of Secrets and the 'extras' disk via DVD Shrink (great tool) and both played just fine on my Omni 3300D player. | greetings I just saw Frys Electronics ad for the Pine 4x dvd-r/rw drive in the San Jose Mercury newspaper (4/5/03). | Burned data and mpeg's directly to DVD-R's with RecordNow Max at 4X without any problems. Use my Initial DVD-9510 to play them directly off the disc. I have found no problems burning at 4X.
