Hm, read all the complaints about this: I got this cos I needed a 2nd DVD burner, didn't care about dual-layer, price was right. I chose this over a dual layer lite-on and a dual layer Aopen. I am in no hurry to burn DVD movies, I rather do it at 2.4x Works great with every burning prog I have used, on every media I have use, very low failure rate compared to a dual layer Aopen I have on another machine. Burns 4x +R and 8x -R, I rarely burn 8x. I would surmise that the people having lots pof trouble with this have a bunch of garbage burning programs that put an ASPI layer in that is not very good: Like Roxio or Gear. TAKE OUT GEAR is it crap. Right nwo, I am using Nero 6.something, Alcholol 120% 1.9.2, and DVD Decryptor 3.5.4.0, and the only burns that make the coaster tray are the ones I burned at a high speed before defragging. Also, for the guy that was wondering about using Region Free, I am using DVD Region+CSS Free version 5.12 - I looked around for it and I fould a version of it that is the full working version, works great. I think it is shareware - Look for Fengtao Software, they make it. My One and only complaint is that this unit comes up as a "Generic" DVD burner in Device Manager, so I cannot figrue out the settings for Book Type. Ive had this burner for months and still have NOT been able to burn on to Verbatim, Mirror or Maxell DVD+R's at anything other than 1x speed. Ive gone over everything, changed software...etc... but no improvemnts. Anyone got any ideas ? ATAPI drivers seem ok - but never uipgraded them. I want to avoid going to DVD-R and get going on +R's. HardDisk speed is fine and supports a high rate burn, but for some reason the drive just falls down to 1x everytime. An yideas ? Comments posted by skc from United Kingdom, November 15, 2004. I had earlier posted that I had a huge problem with this burner in that it could not and would not burn +R/RW media at all.. in any of my machines. I have since then (wow, that was a while ago now) been able to fix the problem which was due to pooched ATAPI drivers of all things. Once I got that sorted out, I can burn Maxells 4X at 8X (data only, video DVD still burns best a slower speeds).. All in all, it was a hair pulling system install but it paid off nicely at the end. Would I buy the 8X -/+ next? Lemme think about it. Comments posted by Seaking from Canada, July 29, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Bought the drive 2 days ago. I manage to encode my wedding videos into a Memorex DVD-RW and it worked wonderfully! Played the Disc on my Philips DVD player and everything worked! It burns a 4.7Gb disc in less than 9 minutes included lead-in and out! I used a Verbatim 8X DVD-R for that test. Only problem is, I could not get any HD Burn to work as yet. Might be my media. I'm using those black based Disc, I believe they are CMC. Its an awesome DVD Burner, extremely quiet, and CDR - RW and DVDR - RW speed is ridiculously fast. I recommend it to anyone. Being in Singapore, I paid like SG$160 ;) worth every penny! Comments posted by NetBladeZ from Singapore, July 04, 2004. Rated this writer No rating. |

I also bought this writer to make movie backups using DVD Xcopy Xpress. So far I have not been able to copy any movies but I have some very nice coasters. I have used Ritek DVD-R, Philips DVD+R, Verbatum DVD+RW, and a couple of others I can't recall right now. I sold a NEC ND-1300 for dirt to get this writer. It may be the Xcopy although it seems to work sometimes with DVD+RW's. I am also a flustrated user. The MSI DR8-A rips fast and it looks like it makes a good burn according to the software and visual inspection, but no movies. Beats me. I have read that it is made by Sanyo = CRD-BPDV3, also called optorite dd0401, accesstek dd0401. Works 100% with infiniti dvd+rw (4* speed), 15 minute write. On a slow computer it took 2 hours to write the same files; the write verified ok. It limits my overclock. I had a 2.66GHz (533MHz fsb) pentium overclocked to 3.2GHz(640MHz fsb). The MSI sometimes gives verify errors when I overclock above 2.95GHz(592MHz fsb). HD-Burn is great, but it doesn't seem to work on older CDRs, giving a power calibration error. Backed up numerous DVD video's using Sony 4x dvd+r and Memorex 4x dvd+r (both burned at 8x), Sony DVD+rw, Sony dvd-r at 4x and Maxell 4x dvd-r, all movies worked flawlessly in my Phillips DVD player. Also burned some data dvds on the above media. Tried several brands of CD-R and CD-RW, all were fine. I would have given this burner a 10 out of 10 but the only thing I didn't like was how long it takes the auto-insert window to come up when you insert a disk into it ~15seconds. P.S. This drive is also the quietest drive I have ever heard. Comments posted by Roach182 from Canada, March 26, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

Well, I have this burner for a month now, and I am very satisifed with it. It is very silent, like no other cd device I have ever seen. When it comes to burning, it is perfect. I used mainy Princo and Verbatim discs. And I noticed that some programs are not working right with it (Nero sometimes). I use Gear Pro 6.05 for creating cd's and varius copy programs. And no problems whatsoever, you only need defragmented hard disc space for maximum performance. You can burn Verbatim DVD+R 4x at 8x. POS burner.. burns well at 4X -R and -RW But cannot, will not, refuses to burn anything in +R format what so ever.. I tossed it in 4 different computers and the same thing. Expensive coaster maker. Comes back with same error no matter what burn prog: Can't write DAO stuff at end of burn. Frustrated? you bet.. BONK No fix no response from tech supp at MSI (who does anymore.. screw the buyer motto?) Comments posted by Seaking from Canada, February 02, 2004. Rated this writer 4 of 10. |

The only issue I have/had with it is I couldn't have both my MSI DVD writer and Pioneer DVD ROM eject at the same time. Windows XP software wouldn't allow it. As they could both eject prior to the OS booting. Otherwise the drives flawless. I've backed up a few movies, played around with CDR/VCD etc. I've burned at full speed without a single issue. I'd buy another one without hesitation. Everythings been click and go unlike my mates pioneer A06. Still figuring out which are the most useful programs but that'll come in time. I've burned about 80dvd-s with this burner using the following media: Verbatim 4X DVD+R, Verbatim 4x DVD-R, Ritek 4x DVD-R. I had the problem burning both the Verbatim DVDs (+ and -) at 4x recording speed - recording buffer was constantly falling and rising resulting with recording time at almost 40mins. However, the content was perfectly recorded. Also, when I burned Verbatim dvds at 2x - everything worked perfectly. Ritek DVD-s acted far better with this DVD recorder - I didn't try to burn those at 8x, but at 4x those behaved almost perfectly. The 'almost' stands for the following reason: I couldn't verify/read a couple of files at 2 DVDs (out of 50 recorded ones) - I guess this is related to media quality rather than burner itself. Finally, I'm not 100% satisfied with CD recording: Princo media burned at higher speeds (>24x) is hardly read, though Verbatim and Benq worked correctly. Additionally, the HD-Burn is pretty usefull, but it doesn't work with Princo media. Comments posted by WKT from Yugoslavia, January 23, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10. |

I use this burner with dvd x copy express. The first burner that I purchased crapped out and died, I took the burner back and got another one without a problem, insalled it and the burner is still working. I have purchased memorex DVD-R with a Blueish/Green. And while the movies play just fine in the dvd burner, I cannot get any of the DVDs to play in my DVD playera. I have a toshiba sd-3800 and it will play the disk for about an hour and then start stuttering and then finally stops working. I have made over 10 out of 10 coasters so far, but I am fairly sure the problem is with the media and not the burnwe. Comments posted by Tom Tay from Other, January 20, 2004.
