Indeed - picky as hell, and the bane to my MacBook Pro experience. I can barely burn any dvds I buy - 95% of cheap dvds don't read at all and like hell I'm going to pay 10x the price of a blank so it can burn.
Everytime I need to burn a disk I generally have to copy/move the iso/files to our G5 and burn on it's more than accepting Pioneer burner.
No RPC-1 firmware and no patch to enable faster speeds / cheap media. Avoid if you have the option.

This drive was installed on my iMac when I bought it from Apple. This drive is very picky! It will only burn 2X for most media, for full 8X buring I suggest that you buy PREMIUM media ONLY e.g. Apple media or Sony. (Anything made in Japan) = $$$! Otherwise you are stuck with crappy performance.

Also there is no firmware released for this drive making it impossible to hack it to make the drive RPC 1 (Region Free). If I am going to be investing in an external DVD writer so I can avoid these problems!
