Hi, I tried Hobartaz code for region 1 (29334), but unfortunately it didn't work. The code for region 2 works for sure. I even tried other methods I've read for other similar Samsungs like swapping subtitle button for repeat, using menu button, or trying the info button and multiple times pressing 9 key, but none worked.

Looks like I'll be trying a different player...

I own a region 2 player and tried it, but it didn't work. Any idea what to do?

This works on my samsung hd870 regio 2 player

This works with the Samsung remote supplied with the DVD player.

Turn on the Player with no disc on the tray. The tv screen and the dvd lcd will display "No Disk"

2. Press the "Repeat" key on the Samsung remote control

3. Press the keys: "5 7 5 3 8" on the remote. Number 2 appears on the screen for a short time.

4. Press "9". Number 9 is displayed on the screen.

5. Press the "Open/close" button in the remote. The tray will open. Leave it open for a few seconds.

6. Just press the "On/off" button in the remote.

7. You now have a multi-region dvd player!!

if you have another one........

PostRegion code hack posted by SteveB, June 21 2007:

I have a Region 2 HD870 and after several attempts the hack (57538) worked, but the remote seems really un-responsive at times.

Unfortuneately I managed to set my player to Region 5. The code in this hack for Region 5 doesn't work, and I almost ended up with an expensive door stop.

BUT if you turn on the player with no disk, and then hold down on the front panel the ->| (right advance) for more than five seconds the unit resets to the factory defaults, and I got my Region 2 player back. Now I've done the hack properly and have a region free player.

I have bought HD870, I have immediately hack it. It works thank u guys, but do not play vcd. Help!!

PostRegion code hack posted by Daan, August 11 2007:

There is a new firmware for the samsung HD 870. All the above mentioned hacks don't work anymore with this firmware version 050807.04.87iHXEXEG.

PostRegion code hack posted by farj, August 21 2007:

I bought a region 1 that arrived August 20th, 2007, and the hack didn't work

PostRegion code hack posted by Rog, September 16 2007:

The hack listed using the remote will not work with the latest firmware on the Samsung HD870 but it is possible to revert the player to a previous version of firmware and then apply the hack. An article on a forum website at
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5500712&posted=1#post5500712

explains how to do this.

I have Samsung DVD-HD870 (bought couple week ago, reg 5, firmware 080907.04.87ihvxexev), and hack, mentioned at the head of this page, does work on it. one adjastment only - I pressed "repeat" twice (on second press "no disc" disappeared), and entered required sequence, BUT with marked pause between each number (about 2 sec).

PostRegion code hack posted by DAVIDE69, December 22 2007:

To make the first hack work you have to press REPEAT for 5 seconds on the remot control.
Then digit one of the codes and when the number of the code of your DVD appear on the screen you have to be quick to press 9 in order to be code free.
Then follow the infos already mentioned and enjoy all the DVDs of the planet!!

Bought a HD870/XET Region 2 on 12th January 2008. "Hobartaz, April 13 2007" hack worked perfectly!

PostRegion code hack posted by Ephantom, February 03 2008:

The hack wich is in the top of the page also worked fine for the firmware 080407.02.87IHVXEXBG.
I had to try twice, but pressing repeat just once, and replacing "stand by" by the "on/off" key.
I converted this DVD from zone 4 to multizone.

PostRegion code hack posted by Wildbill, February 20 2008:

I just received an HD-870 (Region 4, Firmware version 033007.01.87iHVXEXAZ) and successfully applied (after some trials) the region hack informed by Hobartaz (at the top of this item). Just be patient. Now the player is region free.

PostRegion code posted by markbowen, April 14 2008:

I have a region 1 HD870, and I can report that none of the methods in this post, or any other post found on the 'net, work with the region 1 version of the player. (This is also confirmed by other R1 owners on other forums.) So, if you are thinking about getting a R1 version of the HD870, beware that you will not be able to play any non-R1 DVDs.

PostRegion code hack posted by DVDMarc, May 20 2008:

You can actually make a region 1 Samsung HD870 code free. What prevents the previously posted fix to work on region 1 "XAA" (US) models is that it needs another (older) firmware. To make things more complicated, the XAA machinces will only load XAA firmware. The firmware "downgrade" that will take the code free hack is an XEG firmware. Here is how to get around it.

How to make a region 1 Samsung HD 870 code free:

1) Get the firmware "downgrade".
Link to this page:
http://www.samsung.com/pl/products/d.../dvd_hd870.asp
Click on the "tutaj" link at the bottom and download a file called "DVD_HD870_upgrade.zip".
This contains an ISO file "Samsung_DVD-HD870_DivX_Firmware_Upgrade_Disc_Image.iso" which contains firmware version:
"030907.03.87iHXEXEG"
2) Extract the firmware.
The downloaded file is an iso disk image format. Easy CD creator opens it by double clicking on it, and offers to burn a CD. Other CD bruning software could probably do the same. Burn the CD, then load it in your PC and copy the CD files to your hard disk. The files are:
- BUILD.IMG (the firmware binary)
- UPDATE.VER (a text file containing build.img which will start the update)
- __dummy.zzz (a file that will cause the update process not to work, discard it)
3) Edit the BUILD.IMG file.
You cannot use this file directly to update your DVD, because this update is for an XEG model. XAA models will only accept XAA firmware upgrades. You need to edit the original BUILD.IMG so it will load in an region 1 reader.
This is how to do it:
Open the BUILD.IMG file with an Hex editor (I used XVI32 found here:
http://www.chmaas.handshake.de/delph...2.htm#download )
Scroll to the VERY END of the very long file. Look at the right part of the window. The last line starts with XEG. You need to replace these letters with XAA. Just type XAA right over it. Save the modified file under the same name.
4) Burn an update CD.
Burn the modified BUILD.IMG and the original UPDATE.VER into a CD-R with these options:
- Disk at Once
- x4 write speed (or the lowest you can)
5) Update the firmware.
Insert the disc into the DVD. A screen should come up saying:
"Drive Update" and showing the old and new firmware. In my case the old firware was 030807.03.87 HXEXAA. Thanks to our edit, the new firmware name now reads:
030907.03.87 HXEXAA.
Press "Total".
Now be VERY patient, don't do ANYTHING until the player turns off. The firware will load. Long wait. The disc tray will open. DON'T TAKE THE DISC, DON'T TURN ANYTHING OFF. Long wait. The disc tray finally closes. STILL DON'T TURN ANYTHING OFF. Even longer wait. The player finally turns off.
6) Turn it back on.
The player now thinks it is from Europe. It will reboot in Region 2 mode, and with all default setting. Press on the video button several times if you lost your picture setting. Try it with a region 2 disc, it should work. If you try a region 1, it will now say "can't be played, check region
disc region code". Not quite yet a polyglot.
7) Change the region code.
- Empty disc tray and close it, it will say "no disc"
- press "repeat" button. "no disc" disappears. Ah. Finally.
- press 57538 twice, current region code (2) is visible in left corner
- press 9 for code free. 9 appears in left corner.
- turn the DVD off.

Now you should be able to read any disc.
