Region hack is OK and I had it working good for awhile until yesterday.
I am getting black and white scrolling video even after setting Video Output to NTSC and S-video. I can't turn progressive scan to "OFF" position using the menu??? It keeps showing the "ON" when I get back in there.

THE 1-1-1-1 HACK WORKED JUST FINE ON THIS PLAYER--AS DID THE PAL TO NTSC CONVERTER AND THE IMAGE QUALITY IS QUITE GOOD. THIS MODEL HOWEVER IS INFERIOR TO THE 953 MODEL BECAUSE IT WILL ONLY SHOW REGION 1 DVD'S IN ANAMORPHIC FORMAT--OTHER REGIONS WILL APPEAR SQUEEZED AND YOU WILL ONLY BE ABLE TO GET LETTERBOX DISPLAY ON A TV WITH A 16X9 ADJUSTMENT--MY 27" SONY HAS THIS FEATURE. ALSO, THE 953 WILL ENABLE YOU TO REMOVE THOSE ANNOYING FRENCH SUBTITLES ON FRENCH REGION 2 DVD'S--THE 724AT CANNOT REMOVE THEM.

Yo! Whatup?

I have the 724AT for a month now. So far only 1 title i found it will NOT play (TOMIE japanese horror flick Universe Laser HK DD mono ALL region DVD5 bought on ebay, 724 comes up in MP3 mode and usually cannot get to title screen or any chapter, showed WARNING screen a couple of times but hangs afterwards - even my Ultima DVD-ROM on my P4 using PowerDVD has read errors, can see the RED WARNING title scrolling but then starts to pixilate and rainbow and freeze - bad transfer title? probably altho Universe titles have been good and this is the 1st bad one i have encountered).

I generally avoid Philips products of any kind (even their household light bulbs, which suk) but i gave this one a try and glad i did (so far anyway). Read the reviews first, here at dvdrhelp.com, and at epinions and amazon and decided to try it altho some seem to have faulty units they had to exchange, and the warranty is only 90 days. Beats my Apex and Akai region free DVD players i have (altho apex has macrovision free but remotes are nasty and akai has better pic quality and good remote but chokes on many dvd titles and no optical out).

Seems that Compusa is out of them now in my area, and Walmart is blowing them out at $95 to make way for the $95 727AT? 727AT has crappier video quality according to 1 users posting elsewhere here at dvdrhelp.
http://www.consumer.philips.com/global/b2c/ce/catalog/product.jhtml?divId=0&groupId=VIDEO_GR&catId=DVD_CA&subCatId=DVD_PLAYERS_SU&productId=DVD727AT_17

Walmart also has the Pioneer DVD 250 unit which can also be made region free according to the posts here at dvdrhelp.com but seems like a lot more work and also the unit is not so pretty and looks cheapo, well it is cheapo, at $95 regular walmart price for a progressive scan unit.

Thus i have been looking for a way to make 724 play that TOMIE DVD and found that Philips web site is offering to send free CD upgrade [DVD724-Latest Software Version-V406-0624] to improve 'Disc playability issues?' which is nice of them.

Go here
http://www.consumer.philips.com/global/b2c/ce/catalog/product.jhtml?divId=0&groupId=VIDEO_GR&catId=DVD_CA&subCatId=DVD_PLAYERS_SU&productId=DVD724AT

and click on 'Disc Playability Issues?' link at bottom left.

Questions are:
- how do we determine the current firmware version of the player?
- what will this update version fix/change?
- will it kill the region free mode?
- if so, can the region free be re-enabled after the update?
- any way to backup and restore the current firmware if we decide this one sux?

Anybody wanna order it and try it and let us kno? :P

I got the update cd yesterday by calling (1-800-531-0039) and requesting it, as the web form i pointed to in my earlier post, they seem to not respond to.
And since requesting it, i have learned how to check firmware versions on philips dvd players from other player posts here (open tray and press display button on remote).

get various philips firmware downloads from http://philips.ianc.net/downloads.shtml

turns out this cd for the 724 is the same firmware as i'm already running so i guess i cant get those 2 DVDs i have that always dont play in them to play. :(

On a side note, i got a 727 player recently and it plays everything 100% so far, and even has 32x ff/rew and some other subtle improvements. it can also be made region free. excellent.
