UPDATE part 2: I found out the aforementioned GUI does in fact give you the ability to set the FourCC as whatever you want. I just didn't know that until after I had edited mine manually. I guess I just didn't spend enough time reading directions before I started using the program :)

UPDATE: A user has developed a GUI to batch-process files to change the FourCCs (among other possible tasks). It only changes it to XVID (I guess because that's the only one he needed), but if you save the task as a batch file instead of running it immediately, you can use a text editor to modify the command lines to use whatever FourCC you want (I wanted to use MP4V for my own purposes). I just finished changing the FourCCs on over 4,000 DivX files (because my BluRay player won't play them, even though the owner's manual says it should), and the whole process took about 15 minutes, including editing the batch files to change the command lines from XVID to MP4V.

Only complaint would be that you can only edit one file at a time. Could become quite tiresome to edit the 4cc's on my (roughly) 10,000 DivX files to make them compatible with my brand new Samsung home theatre system (for some reason it thinks it can't play them, but if I change the 4cc from DX50 to MP4V, they play just fine).

And incidentally, @auto7890, the most recent version is from 2000, not 2005. And given that it says "No Longer Developed" I doubt there will be a 2014 version anytime soon.

If you want a program with a better interface that also allows you to edit the 4cc, try the abcAVI Tag Editor. It has a drop-down list with all known 4cc's, so you don't have to manually enter it. Unfortunately, it also only allows you to edit one file at a time, but you can load multiple files to make the editing go a lot easier than what this one does.

auto7890,
you should be able to MANUALLY input any FourCC value you want. I doubt Windows 8 can make the drop-down textbox of avic.exe read-only, but if it does, then the actual problem is in Windows 8 itself (for a change).

Just Superb!! Many a time, DivX files play in DivX player but when loaded in Virtualdub, there is only a black image. If you see File Information in Virtualdub-it will show the codec as Panasonic DV codec-occasionally the fourcc code may be seen as DX50.
Just load your video file-set the correct fourcc code in the second line-click Apply and in a fraction of a second, the job is done. The video will now load perfectly in Virtualdub. Tried it with three files yesterday-two showing Panasonic codec and one with DX50 fourcc code. 100% success.
