FWIW - At The Moment, Our Own Local Stores (Including BestBuy, Target, WalMart) Do NOT Seem To Have Any Philips DVP5990 DVD Players Available - However, After A Casual Internet Google Search, BRAND NEW Philips DVP5990 Players Seem To Be Available OnLine At Many WebSites Including The Following: AMAZON + BESTBUY + BUY + CDW + DELL + EBAY + J&R + NEWEGG + PHILIPS.

NOTE: There May Be (Less Expensive?) REFURBISHED Philips DVP5990 Players Available OnLine As Well.

Been using the latest ? firmware (DVP5990_37_vb6_4_1.rar) and am happy with it. However, with the new protection schemes to make copying more difficult, I have noticed that since my player now goes right to the main movie it doesn't always pick out the right sequence on the commercial disk. With transformers I was able to go back to the menu setup and play the movie correctly. With StarTrek I actually had to stick the disk in my computer to find that title 21 was the correct one to play the movie. Stuck it back in my 5990 and manually selected Title 21. Is there a work around or a previous version that does not automatically select the main movie?

Yes, I've seen similar problems with some movies.

  5. I could find no listing for them on BestBuy Canada (which is where I picked mine up earlier in the year), so I had a cousin pick a couple up in a Best Buy in Maine. I ordered them over the phone as on the BB website it said "does not ship." What the hell is up with these players? Can they not keep up with demand? Starting to wish I'd grabbed a few more.

Thanks for the info but since the 3260 is no longer available she decided to go for the 3350 anyway so there's that. Problem however is that she would like to remap her remote to implement volume keys as I've done with the tool "Remote Philips 3260". You advised to refrain from using it in another thread but never explained why. I have done it anyway and it works perfectly fine on my 3260. So how can I remap her 3350's to these keys?

    Subtitle = Vol+
    Zoom = Vol-
    Audio = Audio
    Repeat A-B = Subtitle

Is there any such tool for the 3350 or can I do this manually by changing hex values in your modded firmware? Thanks for any info you can provide.

The Best Buy store in Los Angeles that I went to yesterday has a ton of the DVP5990's. The website claims they are the DVP5990/37's, but when I went to the store to purchase one of them, I checked all the available boxes and they are all DVP5990/F7's. So, my obvious question is, will these firmware updates work on the F7 as well as the 37 variety? Anyone know what the difference is between them? There does not seem to be an official firmware update for the newer F7's, at least not one I could find on the Philips website.

    [UPDATE]
The firmware update DOES work on the F7's as well

VB6ROCOD, or anyone else in the know...

First of all, thanks so much for all your work in doing these updates and providing them to us.

What is the difference between these firmware updates (which is the actual newest one, and why would someone want one over another?)

    http://vb6rocod.lx.ro/dvp5990_12.php

Is the 12 for another country, other than the U.S. or Canada?

    Thanks!

The new GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra jumps way into the movie as well.

BTW, is there a way to turn off the feature that makes the movie skip the main menu? I thought there was, but then couldn't find it. I kinda wanted to go back and the main menu show first.

Hey mate. as far as I know the F7 is actually the 37. There's some mention of this weirdity in another thread, though I kdon't know which off the top of my greying skull.

Well, seeing as how I'm pretty impatient, and since I'm paying a little extra to get it from a walk-in store (so I can return it easier if I need to, as opposed to buying it online), I will buy one tonight, and try the modded firmware.

    Thanks,

    Tom

It's on the Setup, Preference Page. Scroll down (below Password) to DVD-Video.

BTW.... I took that advice only to find out that this new firmware has eliminated the preference page from the set up screen. MY non-modified 5990 and my 5960 have a preference screen but not the modified 5990.

So the question now would be how do I get my preference page back???

It should still be there. I'm running the latest vb6rocod on a 5990/37 and I still have a Preferences menu.

This has come up a few times before. The Preferences menu won't show up if you have any file loaded. Just pausing playback, or hitting the stop button once, is not enough. You have to be all the way back out to the main menu (two taps on the Stop button if you're playing something and want to change a preference). Here's a post I made about this last year:

    Squash:

Thank you. When I started my unit up without anything in the usb drive or a disk in the unit I did get the preference menu. However, I was surprised to find that at the DVD-Video selection, the "with menu" was already selected.
Changing it from one to the other (with and without) does make a difference but it's still not the same as the original version.

I purchased a new DVP5990/F7 yesterday from a Best Buy in Los Angeles.

I upgraded to VB6ROCOD's newest firmware for the /37, and everything works great!

VB6ROCOD, I think you should include the /F7 somewhere on the page for the /37, so people will know it works on both???

The manufacture date for the unit I just bought is July, 2009.

  21. A few days ago, I purchased a new DVP5990/F7 at Best Buy (manufacture date: Sep 2009).

I successfully installed the update from the DVP5990_37_vb6_v4_1.rar file.

The new "GoTo" feature for avi files is now there (press "Title" two times and enter "h:mms"). Where can I find a list of all the changes and additional features that this firmware update provides?

When playing a DVD, stopping, powering off and on, it will resume where it stopped. With an avi file from a USB drive, it always goes back to the file browser after power on (but at least now I can "GoTo" the spot I left off, if I remember to make a note of the time counter). Is there anyway for it to remember and resume playing an avi file from the last position after power off and on (or would that need to be a possible future firmware enhancement)?

  22. resume for avi is quite impossible, very complicated

How difficult could it be if you can already "goto HH:MM:SS"?

Right, how about asking Philips or Mediatek why they did not implement these features in the first place if it's so easy to do. Let us know what they say.

Any of the vb6rocod modded Philips firmware work with the 3982/F7?

Checking the Philips web site I found that their firmware for the 3982/37 works for all of the below listed players....

    DVP3962/37
    DVP3982/37
    DVP3980/75
    DVP3980K/98
    DVP3980K/55
    DVP3986/94

So now my question is, will vb6rocod's DVP3980 or even the DVP3962 modded firmware work with the DVP3982/F7? And if so, would I change the file name from DVP3980.XX.bin to DVP3982_xx.bin in order for it to work? As for the 37 or F7 it seems that the firmware has a history of working on both.

Just curious if the firmware upgrade allows you to view MKV files. I've been satisfied with everything else, but I can't get MKV to work, and since it's just a newer form of Divx, I'm curious as to why it won't.

    No.

The MKV container has been around for a while, and isn't just a newer form of DivX - rather, DivX has recently started using h.264 video encoding in the MKV container. Most DivX/Xvid-capable DVD players don't support h.264 video, however (they don't have the hardware decoders for it).

No, the patches will not allow you to view MKV files.

You should also keep in mind that .MKV, .AVI, and .DIVX are "containers". They can contain audio and video compressed (or not) in any of a zillion different codecs. DIVX is just a slight extension of the .AVI container. MKV is a totally different container.

The Philips Divx/DVD players play standard definition MPEG 4 part 2 (Divx/Xvid) video in an AVI or DIVX container. MKV files will often contain high definition MPEG 4 part 10 (aka. h.264 or AVC) compressed video. The Philips Divx/DVD players do not support high definition video or MPEG 4 part 10 compression. So even if a firmware mod allowed for MKV you wouldn't be able to watch many MKV videos.

Recently, I have couple avi movies that can not play on 5990/F7 (I loaded firmware 4.1).
I can hear the sound but no video. The message on TV said "video codec is not supported".
These files can play on my computer.
What do I need to do with these avi files so that they can play on the player?

    Thank-you.
