I guess at worse I can still put a movie01.jpg and teach my 2 year old that it's the NEXT file that is the movie. Or not.
I too have been wondering about this. I've tried to add thumbs to my video like i do on my mac, but they don't show up. I do get two titles for each avi though. Thanks for all of your help.

You will find it all here http://vb6rocod.blogspot.com/2009/01/update-599012.html or for 37 http://vb6rocod.euracks.com/dvp5990_37.php

I have updated my new DVP5990 with "DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_Philips_Logo.rar" file.
But, i observe that the whole screen turned Orange, after i followed your instructions.
The lettering and movie are not clear. The movie is played in multi colors.

Also, Initially (before upgrade), when i connect my 160 GB hard drive, with folders containg avi files, these folder names are not showing up as they are, and the avi files are not showing up.

After upgrade, its the same issue.

Hope i can rectify these issues, help me.

The orange screen seems to be a problem that may happen if you're using the 5990 with an HDMI connection. Try unplugging the player (from the power supply) for at least ten to thirty minutes, then plug it back in.

(I'm not sure what causes it, myself.)

Edit: If I remember correctly, the limit for external USB drives connected to the 5990 is 300 folders with up to 648 files in each folder, only (or was that a total of 648 files across all those folders?). Does your drive exceed those limits?

    Thanks for your reply.
Unplugging the HDMI connection really helped with the screen.
Now i can play avi files from my flashplayer of 8GB.

But, with my 160GB harddrive, i still have issues with the folder name. Also, the files in this folder are not displayed.
Infact, i deleted all the files and have only one folder with couple of avi files in it.
    Any ideas?

So, the 5990 can see some of the folders, but not all (same with the files) on the 160GB drive? Do the names (of either the folders or the videos) have any non-standard alphanumeric characters, or are they fairly long?

You might try giving them simple names and see if that helps. I don't know if the 5990 will have issues with rather long names (folder or file), or things like extra periods in filenames ("My.Video.avi", for example).

Just to be sure, the 160GB drive is formatted using the FAT filesystem, right? If it recognizes any of the files, it should be, but I just thought I'd ask. I'm not sure if it has any problems recognizing a considerably large drive, though.

    BEWARE!!!

I have a newly purchased Philips 5990/37 (Mfg Apr 2009), it would not play all my Divx movies as my older model used to (I think it was a 642 or 742?), so I tried to upgrade the firmware, first I tried the ver 31 from Phillips, upgraded fine, but it did not help, so I tried the "version 3.2 from vb6rocod" ( http://rapidshare.de/files/45238647/DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar.html ), the upgrade went fine, looked good but did not help my innitial problem, so I thought I would try another version posted by vb6rocod on the same web page (ver 1.2 = http://rapidshare.com/files/142530783/DVP5990_37_vb6_v1_2.rar.html ).

    THIS VERSION BRICKED MY PLAYER!
BEWARE so no one else makse the same mistake!
The 1.2 file listed on https://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675.html WILL BRICK YOUR PHILIPS 5990/37!!!
When I say "BRICK" I mean BRICK!!! NO POWER ON AT ALL!!!

Now I can either serial hack my NEW DVD player, or return it, hmmmmm.

I only wish I had read a post like mine BEFORE I tested these firmwares.

Since you're so far the only on complaining about this version I'm not convinced. One would think someone else on vb6rocod's forum would have had a similar problem. Besides, I haven't seen any divx file so far that would not playback on my player (once remuxed as explained in my FAQ).

It may just be an odd coincidence that your player is "bricked". While I have not used every single update of vb6rocod's firmware, I have the latest installed and it works great.

While software functionality may vary from one computer to the next, the firmware will behave the same since all units are exactly the same (unless defective).

To those of you who only want to bash my comment, I say TRY IT YOURSELF... PLEASE!

    http://rapidshare.com/files/142530783/DVP5990_37_vb6_v1_2.rar.html

I am not new to flashing, PC tech for 15+ years.
This was a bad bin, period.
I flashed my Philips 5990/37 twice prior to this bad bin and had NO problem.

And as for the ignorant comment about ALL Divx files will play on it , that doesn't even warrant a reply.
If you are in the know, you WILL know what I mean.

I'm getting a feeling that this forum is not about helping as it is more about how much "we are all the last word experts".

    NOT.

Trouble reading? I said, all divx files I've thrown at it run flawlessly. Apparently you have badly encoded files. Tough luck, get better downloads next time or keep whining. See if we care.

  16. You can either build a serial cable to reflash your dead player or try to return it for an exchange.
Here are the links with detailed instructions and the tools you'll need...
    http://vb6rocod.xhost.ro/reflash.html
    http://pioneerfaq.info/english/dv400.php?player=DV-400V&question=Dead_Player
    http://leoricksimon.blogspot.com/2007/02/upgrading-divx-player-firmware.html
I could not load firmware into a bricked Philips
DVP5992/37 using the Serial Interface circuit
(by Giskard) suggested by vb6rocod in:
    http://vb6rocod.euracks.com/reflash.html

The circuit failed because the zener diode only
gave about 2 volts at the player RX pin. Note that
the diode's volts vs mAmps curve indicates that its
nominal 3.3v voltage is reached at 76 mA, and that
a voltage below 2v is to be expected at less than
1 mA, which is the current the diode actually gets
    through in the suggested circuit.

I did succeed loading the firmware, -but only after
inserting a 2200 ohm resistor in series with the
diode, which caused the operating voltage at the
player RX pin to rise to 3.0 volts.

BTW, Giskard now suggest a more elegant circuit,
eliminating the zener diode and feeding the transistor
from the player 3.3v pin, instead of the PC DTR pin.

Im not sure if this is really the right place to be asking this, but it's the only place I could find any sort of relevant info. I have a dvp3962/37 and would like to hack/mod it to have a usb port. I noticed that there is a nicely labled, albeit unused usb header on the board inside complete with pinout legend. I tried making a ribbon cable and soldering a female usb port on, but it doesn't attempt to access the usb drive when i plug it in. Solder joints look okay and appear to have flown nicely. No sign of shorts. Everything checked out okay...except that it doesnt work. So basically what I'm wandering is whether it's possible to do this or not. If it were possible, would it be as simple as enabling it in this bios, or would it require some more circuitry or what? I have some modest electronics experience, but when it comes to things like this, I'm really just walking in the dark and info seems to be rare at best. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

AVOID?: The Following Tested Versions *MAY* NOT Be OK For Some Reason (Maybe Best To Avoid?):
09/04/2008 - vb6_v1_2 (We Did Not Test This Version - Report By "oldtiger" With Newer [Mfg Apr 2009] Player.)
    11/21/2008 - vb6_v2

I have been getting this error while playing some "*.avi" files -- "Video Resolution Not Supported". Only sound can be heard... video is not displayed.

Do any one know, why this happens?
What has to be done to fix this?

    Thanks,

what do you mean by 'reencode' with smaller frame size?

I have change my HDMI setup resolution to less than 720p, but still i get this error.

It doesn't matter what the output is set to, the player can only play standard definition sources. Nothing wider than 720 pixels, nothing taller than 576 pixels.

You have to use software to reduce the frame size and recompress the video. Something like AviRecomp or VirtualDub.

A Newer Philips DVP 5990/37 [Mfg Jan 2009] Player Was Tested With The "vb6_v32_DivX_Logo" (02/13/2009) FirmWare Version And, Like An Older [Mfg Aug 2008] Player Tested Previously, Worked *Completely OK* In Preliminary Tests Similar To Those Described In Detail Earlier.

There Are Several Posted Hints That The Very Newest Players, [Mfg Mar 2009] and [Mfg Apr 2009], *MAY* Be Somewhat Different In Some Way And *MAY* Not Work Completely OK With The Modified FirmWare.

Unfortunately, We Have No Present Access To These Very Newest Models And Are Not Able To Test Them.

Perhaps - Some Others With The Very Newest Models Will Report Test Results.
