Newbie making first effort at DVD burning, did a lot of online research on media and burners since I didn't want to waste money on coasters before getting it right. Chose a Mad-Dog MegaSTOR Triple Format 16x8x16 Internal ATA DL DVD+/-RW Drive, model #MD-16X3DVD9-8X, (supposed to be same as NEC 4550) using Verbatim DVD+R DL. Made backup of Fellowship of the Ring using DVDDecrypter and ImgBurn, no bitsetting. From Sony's documentation and this site, could not determine if DVD+R DL would work in this machine. Happy to report that the very first disc works great. Would have rated it a 10 except that with such limited experience I'm not sure that rating would be truly deserved. Specified "FEW" media simply because the Verbatim is the first and only media I've tried. Normally I wouldn't even have posted without more experience, but noting that this format media was unknown in this player thought it might be important to report my success for others who may be wondering.

Generally pleased with the versatility of this player. After one and a half years of use, I now have problems playing CD-R and DVD-R/RW media (skipping/tracking problems, at some point in the disc) . Same CD-R discs will play in computer or other CD players, but not in the NS500V.

Normal CDs and DVDs play fine.

I have been using Philips DVD+R 2x discs since I got my burner. Have used a few Maxell 2x, and Memorex 2x. All work fine in this unit.
I use Verbatim CD-R for music. No problems there either. Have not tried any RW media.
SACD not functional thru digital optical out, only 5.1 connections, but unit allows both and my Pioneer reciever decodes everything just fine. Overall a good unit, I am sure there have been great improvements and other units with better features. But for the price (bought on ebay) this unit does it all.

Plays every CDR I've tried. Plays beautifully in SVCD and VCD formats. DVDRs are a different story. Will not play Verbatim DVDR. It did play Samsung BeAll DVDRs perfectly. That's all I tried so far.

SACD sounds great. Overall excellent audio-video playback. A great deck. No MP3 though.

I had no problem with a DVD+R 4X TDK playback. Though the manual doesn't say that it plays DVD+R, it did it just fine.

I have tried one brand of DVD-R in this machine and it didnt work (DVDPro). Can someone tell me what brand media they are using?

I would go out and try a few different brands like with CD-R's but DVD-R's are a little more pricey to use for trial and error.

Other than that this player is a great value!

Excellent in all respects. Sound is wonderful and the picture is really excellent even with a basic 27 Sony TV using S-Video connection. Paid only $200 including shipping from Crutchfield and Sony gave me 5 DVDs free to boot!

What can I say about this model? It's excellent. The DTS and Dolby Digital decoder sounds better than the Sony decoder I bought a couple of years ago that I just hooked the 5.1 analog outputs to the decoder. The SACD playback is very, very good. I bought a few discs and it sounds excellent. DVD-Audio discs play as long as they have a DTS or Dolby Digital soundtrack, making this unit even better than one that only plays DVD-Audio.

It plays XVCD (which is great as few players do this correctly) and SVCD (which is just as good). The only problem I ran into when playing them is that the XVCD menu didn't work until I hit Shuffle to turn off the PBC.

Same comments as others posted before but I also tested XVCD at 2.5 MBps and it worked fine using Verbatim CDR.
Great player, lots of features, top notch Sony picture quality, box includes a sample SACD and a DVD.
SVCD ability is not documented anywhere but played fine with 2 brands of CDR and 3 brands of CDRW.
Lacks MP3 decoding, not progressive scan, same average remote, slower than average access times. Since Sony has released new models the 500V has come down alot in price, may be the deal of the summer.

Comments:
Great DVD Player. I have always used Sony cause the quality of the image/audio are great. I also have the NS300 player and DAV300 system.

Bought this for 179.00 last week cause it plays SVCDs. No mention in the manual either. Called Sony prior to purchasing it.

This is a multi-format player that even playes SACD!

Did not need Prog scan since my XBR Sony has a great 3:2 pulldown (Can't even tell the difference when switching between interlace and progressive) players.

One thing: Has a hard time reading SVCDs if burned with bin/cue file with Nero. Instead, I extract the bin/cue into Mpeg file, then use Nero to burn SVCD and has worked everytime with every CD I have tried.
even comes up in the display saying SVCD format!

So far these CDRs worked:

TDK, Fuji, STD (Circuit City brand-Digital Media), ProMedia (from best buy), Maxwell.

If burning VCDs/SVCDs is your thing, this is a great all around player with Sony quality.

I looked at the JVC and they are good all around players like Apex, but they are not as good as Sony units. Of course Sony players are more $$.

If you wait, newer players coming out this month with model 715 prog scan for 199.00 and model 755 prog scan for 299.00 that will handle SACDs too. Not sure if these will handle SVCDs though. The video bitrate is higher on these- 108 mhz so loading discs should be quite fast.

Highly recommended!
