You don't need to power down the player, just don't put a disc in, cause you have to press Play and that'll make the disc play (duh)

remote:
Disc Menu
Play
1 5 9

[ Display says: -- -- -- -- -- -- ]

12 12 12 005 255

This will make it region free. Tested with r1, r2 and r0 discs.

If you don't want to make it region free but just switch your region:

121 212 005 001 for region 1
121 212 005 002 for region 2

and so on. 000 results in that no region works anymore, so don't do that.

This also works on the new DVDR725H, so may also work on other Philips (HD/)DVD Recorders.

Dammit, forgot something.
if any admin sees this feel free to delete previous post.
Here is the good one:
========================================

Here is the above information in english:

You don't need to power down the player, just don't put a disc in, cause you have to press Play and that'll make the disc play (duh)

Make sure the player is in Disc Menu

Use the remote:
Play

1 5 9

[ Display says: -- -- -- -- -- -- ]

12 12 12 005 255

Play

This will make it region free. Tested with r1, r2 and r0 discs.

If you don't want to make it region free but just switch your region:
same procedure, but use the following instead:
121 212 005 001 for region 1
121 212 005 002 for region 2

and so on. 000 results in that no region works anymore, so don't do that.

This also works on the new DVDR725H, so may also work on other Philips (HD/)DVD Recorders.

PostRegion code hack posted by E.C. vd Akker, July 29 2005:

Previous hack do work. but I would like to say something about the last 3 digits. It works like a bitmask. To explain how that works read this:

the 3 digits represent a decimal equivalent of a 8 bit-binary code:

line 1: 00000000 = 0
line 2: 00000001 = 1
line 3: 00000010 = 2
line 4: 00000011 = 3
line 5: 00000100 = 4
line 6: 00000101 = 5
line 7: 00000110 = 6
line 8: 00000111 = 8
....
line 9: 11111111 = 255

I am sure you see the patern. Now, every bit represents the region. the first bit (on the far right) is for setting region 1, the seccond bit is for setting region 2, etc.
So, in my little binary list, on line 1 you see all the bits set to 0. This doesn't work, it will just turn off all the regions.
In line 2 you see that the far right bit is set, which is the first bit. So, in line 2 region 2 is enabled.
In line 7 bits 2 and 3 are set, which enables region 2 and 3.
In line 9 all bits are set...

Understanding this mask, you can figure out that setting all the bits must enable all reagions. And that actually worked with my deck.

So, to make your deck region-free, you have to enter the mask with all bits set, that equals the decimal number 255.

(If you want to risk loosing your warrenty, make sure you set the right mask back when taking your deck to the store, in case you need to have to.)

====================================================

This is the right implementation:

To enter the service mode: press PLAY, 1, 5, 9, PLAY (with no disc loaded)
and then use the normal digits 121 212 005 [MASK], PLAY, to apply the region setting, as devined in the mask.

This regards very useful information about the Philips HDRW720 recorder. Free download of the service manual is available at a site that has free manuals for download. The url of the download for the Philips recorder is:
http://www.eserviceinfo.com/downloadsm/24201/Philips%20DVD-HD_HDRW720.html

I do hope this doesn't violate any policy here, but I just downloaded the manual and found tremendous service info in it including service script codes. If this does violate policy, perhaps someone can put the information in an area which might be available to those looking for information on the philips recorder.

I have tried the method that Adam Cook posted here, but I could not get into disc menu without a disc inside. So I tried system menu instead. I pressed the keys exactly as Adam said. The screen had no response at all. But it actually worked!

Thank you, Adam Cook
