After trying to encode a ripped dvd from my hd all night I did have some success with this program. Some of the options for the H.264 can make files created unusable and I never did get a .mkv contained file to work. A little tweaking goes a long way. Otherwise, the authors believe h.264 is the "wave of the future" and I guess it is used for bluray or so they say. The problem is I tried the videos cross platform on a 360, win2k and win Vista64. My older computer running at 1.8GHz can barely play back the video unless almost all the complexity is removed this problem is not evident with divx my old computer can handle those with ease. Xbox has no problems with most of vids created same as vista. The other downside hear is that this tool doesn't offer the use divx the "wave of the past" perhaps. So the bottom line is that this tool is for creating Mac or apple or ipod based video. Although these are supported under windows it would be nice to use this interface for a wider array of codecs and therefor other video formats. Finally video at 25% the size is quite remarkable h.264 is comparable to divx compression quality and with complexity maxed out and the right hardware it looks very much like the original. In summary the user interface is helpful and it does work with some tweaking all in all I was left wanting something more like virtual dub showing input and output video and allowing for any codec you can install although I never got as good of results in virtual dub. I would recommend changing the settings testing the created file on your different hardware and see if it will work for you. Then I would look for something more versatile in-case you want more than applevid. |
