I went with Studio 8 because it says it can import/edit mpeg2 files. Avi files take up too much room on my hard drive and you are restricted to 4 GB (Win98?) which is only about 3-4mins of video.
Here's my experience with Stuio 8 -
Running Win98SE, DX9.0a, 1.3Ghz, 80Gb hd, 512 MB ram, ATI AIW 8500.
Out of the box it didn't see my ATI video card as a capture driver. Only choice was DVcamcorder (which I don't have). The AMCapture program that tech support told me to try (on the cd) works and see's my ATI card as well as other capture drivers and captures video.
Also couldn't open any mpg, avi or jpg files in the edit screen.
Downloaded and installed the 8.5.21 update.
Capture still didn't work.
Can read files in Edit now but mpeg2 playback is so choppy that it's useless to try to edit.
Downloaded and installed 8.8Beta patch.
Still can't capture but mpeg2's play smoothly now.
Email tech support and after about a month I get a reply saying it should work with my video card as it works with the 9700. Back and forth with tech support with a 2 week or more lag between replies. Try different video drvers etc.
Eventually, the latest 8.8.17 was out. D/l and install.
Capture still doesn't work. Tech support eventually decide that my video card is not compatible!
Can import mpeg2's captured by my ATI and editing is a breeze. Everything works great. In the "DVD mode" all the buttons jump to the correct chapters. Looks great.
After burning to DVD or to the hd (playback thru' PowerDVD) nothing works. Buttons don't take you to the start of chapters. They always take you to the start of the video and when the video plays it seems to skip frames so that a 40min video is over in 30 sec. Tried everthing and get the same results everytime.
The only way Studio seems to work is if the files are in avi format. Then everything works.
So, at least for me, it doesn't work as advertised.
Capture doesn't work and it doesn't work with mpeg2's.
Was a waste of $100.
Be wary of this software.
