First of all I must note that my product version seems to be a bit different than any other that I have seen (8.7.33.0). This came with Studio 8 AV/DV that includes a analog and DV combined capture card. I think it is a new product from Pinnacle and I only found it at CompUSA for $130.
This is my first extensive experience with capture/editing/authoring software. I have been using it for about a week and have had very good results. Surprisingly I have NOT had the audio OOS problems that seem to be everywhere on the Pinacle forum. I captured a 1 1/2 hour VHS, edited it and burned to DVD without a hitch. I have also done some smaller projects including VCD and SVCD (10 for 10 and no coasters yet). The other common problem I have NOT experienced is lock ups.
My biggest complaint is the amount of time required to render. I don't have a speed deamon (Athlon XP 2000, 512 Meg and 4 HDs striped into 2 with read and write speeds in the 60's) but I expected better than a 8 to 1 ratio. It also states that my system is not fast enough to capture directly into MPEG2. I tried but it was dropping 200 frames per minute. I have been capturing in AVI with 0 dropped frames in 90 minutes. I am going to tweak the system and remove all non-essentials to try to improve performance.
This software does not seem to be as buggy as some have stated here but once again my version is a bit higher that the others (8.7.33.0).
I will try some DV capture with my new MiniDV camera that just arrived and post back with results in a few weeks. |
