  1. Hey all -

Been reading alot about the JVC DR-M10SL - seems like the folks who have it are happy with it. Couple quick questions:

1: I am using a DMR-E60 right now - if I am dubbing MiniDV (1 HR mode) and 8MM (2 hour mode) video tapes to the JVC DR-M10SL, should I expect to see an improvement over the Panny? Or is it only when recording over 2 hours that you are seeing improvements?

2: Overall, for the people who have used the E50/E60 and the JVC DR-M10SL, is this a good upgrade?

3: What's the best place to buy the M10?

    Thanks,

    Eric

Comparatively, Panasonic quality is trash against the JVC. The Panasonic blockiness reminds me of VCD.

  4. Ok, thanks for the info.

gotodvdr - have you used ecost? quality service?

They have the DR-M10S for 299 - this is a great price. Is this the same unit as the DR-M10SL?

    Thanks,

    E

I have a Panasonic E50 and recently got a JVC DR-M10SL. Bottom line, the JVC records a better looking, less noisy DVD than my Panasonic does. I got mine from eCost for $306 shipped and it arrived in 4 days.

Source quality and type is a factor in any transfer to DVD MPEG2 video. For home videotape conversions (hand held camcorder footage), if you exceed 1 hour per DVD the quality will suffer and compression artifacts (blocking, etc.) will be noticeable. Most commercial movies (except very high action films) from a laserdisc or VHS source up to 2 hours and 30 minutes long will look fine on one DVD at full 720x480 resolution using the JVC. For VHS movies longer than that, the extended recording modes reduce the resolution to Half D1 (352x480) which is completely acceptable in playback quality up to about 4 hours.

Here's a few screen grabs from an older full frame (4:3) Blade Runner laserdisc I recorded in 2 hour SP mode with the JVC -
