| Using fujifilm T02 +r 8x media, (media burns at 16x on NEC ND-3500) most burns with this drive had errors at 8x. After reading all the comments and realizing the bottom line: "this drive does not work as advertised" I rma'd to samsung. They are sending me another drive of the same model, much to my chagrin. Tier2 support at 1-800-samsung said he was not authorized to send me a different model. I asked him if I should eat the drive if it gives me the same problems. I also pointed out the drive has been discontinued. Avoid Samsung optical drives! Get NEC or Lite-on instead!! Comments posted by rick from United States, February 10, 2005. | Since my last post, I have burned a number of DVd's in both +R and -R formats. The issue seems to be one of speed. Burning at the the lower (2.4x) speed produced flawless results while the 4x and 8x were less predictable - evem with 8x +R Verbatim and TDK blanks. Will try the firmware upgrade mentioned below. | First two -Rs went down in flames... Updated the firmware with Toshiba's update utility... (Yes, it's a toshiba drive by blood, only Samsung in name.) Has burned -Rs fine since. | Initially bought this because it was cheap ($99) and would burn both media types at 8X. Used cheap -R disks and burned garbage, but as listed below, burned Verbatim +R and TDK +R with movies that played flawlessly on my Toshiba. | Well, I finally ran into some issues, if you search Samsung's website for troubleshooting, it a note under the information on specs it read "Note- Does not support DVD-R for Authoring." So much for a Dual format burner! All of the DVD-R backups I made had some sort of glitches, none of which occurred when I used the Pioneer A07 model at work. The Samsung would rip dvds and burn on DVD+R 8x with no problems at all. I am taking this thing back to Micro Center and picking up a Pioneer A07! | Picked this burner up at local Micro Center store, for $99, and was able to burn 8x Verbatim dvds instantly. Using a no name cheapo DVD-R purchased from Meritline.com, I have had several problems with DVD playback on my home players (Cyberhome 500, Initial IDM-1731) and also on my Pioneer A-05 player at work. Found out after hours of searching on Samsung website that they do not recommend DVD-R for authoring, and specific media types should only be used (TDK, Ritek, Panasonic, Verbatim). Other than these problems, the player/burner is great. If I can get it to rip and burn DVDs, then it would have a rating of 10. BTW - MP3 ripping is quick also!
