Bought the lg4081 drive first but the missing bitsetting made me return that and buy this one instead. No problems so far. Installed the drive, updated the firmware to latest and startet burning. No junk disc yet. Have tried DVD-r,DVD+R and DVD+RW. Testet the booktype tool and that worked too. Only reason for not getting 10 of 10 is that I only burned 5 disc and that isn't enough to deside if it is worth the last point :o)

Stefon you cannot go back in firmware. I have tried! atleast not with the firmware supplied by liteon. maybe if I flashed it with some other drive then back to liteon version K it might but I am not going to take a chance on that. I will live with P until a new on comes out. Since the drive is still newer firmware upgrades will be comeing out at a pretty good pace. Have you tried with any other media? I have been useing sky -r 4x sky +r 8x(junk) memorex -r 4x memeorex +r 4x. It all comes down to this sky media is really junky, as posted by others its junk. I am getting samples of other media to test on will post any resaults. I personnaly think the standards of manufactureing of sky media is poor.

ohwell of to burn more(no coasters I hope)

ddaquatics I am sorry I cannot confirm your findings I updated to the latest firware and have burned several movies and have no problems playing them in my pc or my home DVD player. Also all my backups are fine. I am using the arita media from newegg.com. It burns at 8X DVD+R and its also pretty cheap in price. 94 cents a disk in lots of 100. I have not tried the bit setting mostly because I don't see the need to change anything about the drive. I hope you discover your problem you can always flash back to the older firmware right.

ok to all running out there getting ready to flash your drive to the new firmware P to get bit setting util to work! DO NOT DO IT! all resaults since I flashed to P or poopy! disk are unreadable! I was able to burn at 4x on sky dvd-r 4x now only at 2x no not becouse it makes me but because the disks are un readable heck even memorex +r 4x are unreadable now, it looks like everything is fine but when I play it in any of my home dvd players that everything worked on before even cheep media now every burn is junk! making coasters fast! Gona order ritek +r 8x and give it another test with good media but not looking to good, any suggestion? remeber once you flash to P you can not go back to K! at K mine worked better then it does now

I bought this drive (Liteon 811S upgraded to latest firmware HS0K) repackaged as a Pacific Digital Mach 8X.

I am finding that it recognized only 2 of the 50 Pack StarLogic (Princo). So I bought some Ritek G04s. Only after trying a couple of times (ejecting, reinserting) I got the drive to recognize the disks.
Now my question is: Is the drive or the Media?

New firmware out to do bit setting, I have not tried it yet but I did flash to the latest firmware. This drive gets better everyday, way to go lite on.

Works great. Doing 8x writes on Ricoh JPNR01 DVD+R discs with very good results so far. I've only written about 6 discs so far, but with great results.

Bought the drive as a Christmas present to my self and opened it early ;)

Already had the latest firmware on it. Does not, under any circumstances, want to burn on Memorex 4x +R. PERIOD. Burns at 8x on Verbatim 4x +R and burns 4x on BeAll 1x-4x media -R. Rips fast, too. Averaging 7.9x rip speed with dvddecrypter. Machine is only an Athlon 1.33 with 512 PC133 RAM. All told - rip (8 min), DVD2ONE (23 min), burn (8-9 min) = ~40 - 45 minutes.

I got mine from Mwave for $146 retail package. Comes with PowerDVD and MyDVD and 1 blank +R and 1 blank +RW.

Very happy overall.

Great Drive, does everything it says on the box!
Burns a Full DVD in under 9 Minutes, what more do you want!
Burned loads of DVD's and not one coaster (touch wood!)

Tons of problems ...

The bundled software (MyDVD) has several issues. Firstly, it incorrectly calculates the remaining space on disc. After spending a couple of hours creating my first DVD I hit the "burn" button. Then, after about three hours of preparation time, it returned the error message "there is not enough space on the disc". I went back, and deleted about 300 megs of stuff. Burned again -- same error.

Finally I was able to burn a DVD if I limited myself to about 1.5 hours of video. However not all of the tracks would play in either the 851S itself or my Toshiba set-top. About %20 of the tracks were unplayable despite MyDVD indicating a successful burn.

I decided it might just be the software so I moved on to testing with TMPG DVD Author and Nero 6. I was able to author a DVD with about 4 hours of content from VCDs and it seemed to burn correctly (no errors). However I had a similar problem to the MyDVD behavior - about %20 of the tracks would not play in either the 851S or my set-top box.

Finally I decided to upgrade the firmware of the 851S in case that was the issue. The upgrade program locked up at %100. I rebooted after waiting about 20 minutes, and the drive has not worked since.

Testing was done on Windows 98 using Memorex media.

No issues. Just pop it in and it works great. It also burns at 8x on many 4x DVD media.

I posted a comment about the problem of reading some CDs. Found the problem now. The problem is caused by the program DLA (drive letter access, a packet writing program similar to InCD or DirectCD) which come with Sonic MyDVD.

Good writer, I produced over 10 data DVDs (5+ and 5-), only one unreadable (+). I test all written DVD on 3 different PCs found that all -R discs are fine. One +R disc has some problem in one PC, one directory is readable although this disc is readable in other two PCs. So, it seems -R is more compitable than +R. I give 8 because I wish it could write -R at 8X.

Just bought this writer from Newegg and installed it in an external Firewire/USB2 casing. Burns +R 4X (Memorex)discs at 8X. Ordered some Ritek 4X +R's to try with it.Great drive.

Has worked perfectly since I got it from OfficMax like everyone else.
Only one coaster so far and that was my fault for not setting up Nero correctly out of the gate.
Even that cheap starlogic media that they were selling works.

Got the 851S at OfficeMax for $80 last week and I'm having trouble getting anything to burn at 8x. For such a low price I can't really complain but I'd love to be able to get through a burn just a tad quicker.

Some others have reported success with TDK and Memorex 4x media burning at 8x on the 811S. What's the deal with the 851S?

I am using firmware DR8GS08 and Nero 6 Ultra but the drive only shows up as 4x...

Is this a firmware issue?

Harris Ford, the fact that you have that many burning software apps installed on one pc is the problem, remove all the apps and reinstall Nero 6 and you would have given this drive a much better grade

It´s working fine with Nero, no problems! I´m using Nero 6,3 version, and firmware HS0K, but it worked okay with HS0E too.

Jane,

Here is how you check your PIO/DMA setting in Windows XP

Goto/Click:

Start
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Right Click on Primary or Secondary IDE Channel
Then click on "Properties".
Now click on the "Advance Settings" tabs
PIO/DMA selection is in the "Transfer Mode" field.

Good Luck!

Only had the drive a couple of weeks and its brill, I had a little problem with the media but I blame bulkpaq for that, since I have switched to Zero defex media (ritek) it burns 100% every time with no coasters, and when you consider that it only cost £115 all in for a 8X DVD multi burner... that’s got to be called a bargain!!!!!!! I have bought LiteOn hardware before and have always been impressed with the quality, and with the 811s they have surpassed all previous efforts QUALITY. SPEED. RELAIABILITY.
