If you do not have a PDA or a Symbian phone, www.pioneerfaq.info has alternative firmwares which you can use. Simply downgrade to firmware 1.09 (following instructions on pioneerfaq), and press the enter/select key on the remote, and hold it till the DVD player turns off. Then turn the player off at the wall, switch it back on again, and upgrade to firmware 1.20 (which is the latest), again following instructions, and your DVD player will be region free. You do need to follow instructions to the letter, otherwise you may end up with a dead player. | |||

Hi there, Timechasers description works fine, but you do not need to upgrade to version 1.20. This firmware version is original pioneer and I am not sure if it really works. I used the 1.09 from the afore mentioned website and it works great and boosts your player by a whole set of new features. I used the model sold in Germany and encountered no problems. Just make sure, and I cannot stress this enough, to follow the description to the letter! Have fun! | |||

Here's how you do it for Sony Ericsson P800/P900/P910. Download the Symbian-version of the remote control software. Install the software. Copy the settings-file to DOCUMENTS. Open the software on the phone. Choose Pioneer DVD. Close the software. Go to DOCUMENTS and click on the settings file. The rc-software will open again. Give the hack a name. Now put your phone on the right front side of you player and press SEND several times. Be patient. | |||

The above mentioned firmware hacks works fine, but it still dont make your DV-585A region free. Atleast not with the 1.09 firmware alone. There are quite a few nice addons in the player with that firmware tho. | |||
