    Hi all,

Any help would be appreciated on this little problem

what I am trying to do is convert an XVID file to DIVX, Why, because my KISS DVD player says it will play XVID AVI files but in reality for some reason on mine it won't (That is even after the latest Firmware flash upgrade also!)

The only way I can do it is 2 use Dr Divx to re-encode the XVID to a DIVX AVI file then it will play on the KISS DVD Player. However even with Dr Divx convertor set at the highest Quality the resultant AVI file is a lot smaller & I have noticed a drop in picture quality also (the choice only seems to be "Home Theater or High Def").

What I am looking for is a "like for like" conversion, I'm not really bothered if the file size is the same size or slightly larger. Is there something I am missing in the settings of Dr Divx or do I need to use an alternative progey?

    Regards,

    Dave

  2. First try AVI FourCC Code Changer to change the fourcc code from xvid/XVID to divx/DX50. If that doesn't work try AVI Recomp or AutoGK.

    Hi Jagabo,

Thanks for the prompt reply! I have downloaded AVI FourCC Code Changer but I'm not clear as to what you select in the options to convert Xvid to Divx?

    The options are as follows:
    FourCC Description Code:
    FourCC Used Codec:
The Folder select underneath is self explanatory

I have also found this whilst WWW'ing a small progey called DIVX2MP4 v1.6 from http://www.risingresearch.com/en/divx/ has anyone used this & if so could you share your experiences please, like is it any good?

    Regards,

    Dave

  4. Just type in the fourCC codes. Change the FourCC Description code from "xvid" to "divx". Change the FourCC Used Code from "XVID" to "DX50".

    Hi again Jagabo,

Thanks again for the reply will give it a go!

Have you ever used DIVX2MP4 or know of anyone who has?

  6. I don't know anything about DIVX2MP4. [edit]I just downloaded the program. It's a FourCC changer. You might find it a little easier to use than AVI FourCC Code Changer.[/edit]

Note that the FourCC code is just an identifier that tells a player what codec should be used to decode the video. Using AVI FourCC Code Changer as described is simply telling you player that the video was encoded with Divx, not Xvid. Both Divx and Xvid are MPEG 4 part 2 codecs so, for the most part, any player that can play one should be able to play the other. Both have features that many set top players can't handle.

If that doesn't work you'll probably have to reencode the video. That's when AVI Recomp, AutoGK, or other encoders will be necessary.

When you say your Kiss player doesn't play Xvid files what do you mean? It won't play them at all? Or they don't play properly (jerky, bad colors, etc)?

    Hi Jagabo,

The KISS DVD player is a DP-450 flashed with the latest firmware upgrade but all I get is a black screen, nothing at all, no video, no sound, which is a little frustrating. It will play Divx Movies compiled with Dr Divx or if the XVID has been re-encoded to the Divx format but unfortunately the quality suffers!

I did read on the WWW somewhere that AutoGK has spyware installed is that true or is it another old wifes tail by the competition? Anyway much obliged for the details relating to the FourCC code, it clears the fog a little.

    Regards,

    Dave

Try AviReComp. OK, a slight quality drop is inevitable, but I've found it's small enough for those (rare) silly stand alone player unfriendly files.

ispy - Use Gspot and examine your Xvid files. Do they contain any of the following?

    Packed bit stream
    QPel (Quarter pixel)
MMC (with more than 1 warp point)

I don't know what chip Kiss players use to decode Divx, but the 3 things I mentioned are often problems for standalone players and unfortunately people that encode with Xvid have a tendency to use those. You can unpack a bit stream easily enough with, I think, MPEG Modifier, but it requires re-encoding to get rid of QPel and MMC.

By the way, Dr. Divx does not use any of those 3 things by default. In fact, I'm not sure that you even can turn them on in Dr. Divx. I get very good results in Dr. Divx, but I encode by specific high bitrates rather than encoding by quality. I don't encode to Divx a lot, but I do sometimes encode high def TV captures to it and I'm pleased with the results.

  12. MPEG4Modifier will also tell you if the file has QPEL or GMC.

    Hi jagabo & 45tripp,

Thx for all the info guys I have downloaded the MPEG4Modifier I have run it on the XVID file & it reports the following data from the video info:

    Packed bitstream: Yes
    QPel: No
    GMC: No
    Interlaced: No
    Aspect ratio: Square pixels
    Quant type: MPEG
    FourCC: XVID
    User data: DivX503b1393p
    XviD0046

    I-VOPs: 1599 (1.78%)
    P-VOPs: 45623 (50.85%)
    B-VOPs: 42498 (47.37%)
    S-VOPs: 0 (0.00%)
    N-VOPs: 0 (0.00%)

    Max consecutive B-VOPs: 1

    General settings:
    Aspect ratio Square pixels

    Packed Bitstream:
    Unticked check box

    User data:
    Divx503b1393p
    XVID0046

    Interlacing = No

Field order greyed out but states top first

Your Right jagabo QPEL & GMC are No as the above states. As I am not familiar with this stuff is it adviable to change minimum settings like 16:9 PAL. Tick the unpack packed bitstream & presumably save.

    Dave
