This is my first dvd+/-rw drive and it works excellent. I didnt have any problems so far, I burn dvds, cds, vcds, cdrw, dvd+, dvd-. Its really a great product from sony. I have used brand names and no name brand cds and dvds and it works perfectly fine. The software I use is Nero and Dvd X Copy.

I bought this recorder last July. In general, I have no problems when using brand name dvd disks such as TDK and Sony, but using bargain disks causes me write failures. In some cases, like Samsung disks and 50% Sentinel disks I have tried, recording was completed "successfully" but disks are unreadable even from the recorder itself!

Hardware: Intel P4, M/B Gigabyte 8IRXP, 512 MB DDR-SDRAM
Software: DVDDecrypter, CloneDVD and/or Nero 6.0.0.15

Compatablility issue with MEMOREX 4X DVD-R (i think all memorex). First 25+ and 25- worked fine. Next 10-r's worked fine and then all of a sudden I am having NO luck with any the memorex disks i have. Called sony and they said memorex isnt supported and they were suprized they worked for as long as they did. I wish i knew ealier. As far as speed and software I am extreamly happy... just bought ritek today. Seems to have a flawless reputation.

I've had this drive for about 6 months now and had no problems at all. Used tdk's bulkpac's, datawrite disks and never produced a coaster yet.......
Have'nt upgraded the firmware, haven't felt the need to.

Hi, I have had my Sony DW-U10A V1.1D for about 2 1/2 weeks it seems to work fine with Verbatium DVD+R 2X And 4X (burnning at 2.4X) is their any reason to update the firmware to the sony v2.0f ????

I have noticed that I have to create Data dvd-r(s) at 4x to 12x for it to beable to read in other CD-ROM(s).

*Note: Using DVDXGhost, DVD Shrink v2.3, and Nero v6 (latest)
Works good on my Go-Video, Lite-on 16x, and Philips DVD621.

This is one of the best pieces of computer hardware I have ever purchased.

While not the quickest on the market, the DW-U10A is reliable, reliable, reliable.

I have burnt 75 DVD-R (Memorex and Aterra) without a single coaster. These are the same bargain basement disks many have complained about.

Computer dealers I spoke to before purchase of the burner lamented that DVD-R/RW still had months if not years of tweaking before it becomes accepted on a broader scale. Well, if the DW-U10A is any indication, DVD-R/RW has arrived.

This burner is fantastic! With the latest firmware (2.0g) it burns DVD-/+R at 4x in a very stable way. It increases the writing speed constantly from 0x to 4x in about 15 secs. and it never goes down from 4x again! I've burnt all of my 4x media in less than 16 mins. I've tried brand name and Ritek 4x and they all burn great. I've also tried +/-RW and they also burn flawlessly at speeds of 2x and 2.4x respectively. I have burnt lots of +/-R and the drive works as well as it did when it was new!

Thanks Sony!

Burned over 100 discs, +/- R and +/- RW's and CD-R's from many vendors - TDK, Ritek, Memorex, Fuji, etc. No problems, extremely reliable. Using 1.0c firmware, no problem burning at 2.4X on compatable DVD media, very snappy CD-R burning on TDK discs at 24X.

We have had a horrible experience with this drive. Both a friend and I each picked up the drive only to not be able to burn DVD-R media at 4X. Tried 4-5 different types of media in 3 machines and no go... garbage. Finally after spitting our several coasters we both exchanges for the Pioneer A06U (highly recommend). This is the last Sony drive I will be purchasing.

Go it 3 weeks ago from ncix with a spindle of Generic 4X DVD-R which happenned to be Princo white top, purple media.

I use Nero 6, kept original F/W 1.1d I think.
1st burn at 4X went well but verification fails. Coaster.
2nb burn at 2X went well, success.
Burn 3-12 at 2X went well again.
Burn 13, tried back at 4X, same as 1st, coaster. No more 4X for these!
I tried with Memorex DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD+R with success.

Bought some Memorex DVD+R 4X, went to F/W 2.0f for 500A last night and the first burn at 4X was a success (16.32min). I think I will stick with +R 4X.

I might try to create another coaster from my Princo at 4X with the new F/W...

It's great to have the FirmWare hack. With 4X and multiple format support I'm very happy with the drive.

With the different results from peoples after flashing to 500A BIOS, it seems all U10A are not created equals. I see a parralel with overclocking of CPU there...

Got it from ebuyer.com in the uk for £99 + VAT - now down to £94 + VAT (8 Oct 03). Just drive no software, leads instructions etc.

Plugged into PC in place of DVD ROM XP installed in no problem. Using with firmware as is.

Burned 1 panasonic -R (read on PC and Panasonic A360)
1 Jessops -RW a multitude of times (plays on both) as I am learning / experimenting with menus etc
and 1 Infiniti Professional DVD+RW E240 Single Disc in DVD Case Idea For The Home DVD Recorder (plays on PC only)

Using TMPGEnc DVD Author to master and burn.

Bought this drive at the local computer show for $155 USD. Was a little worried with all the comments about having to change firm wares, but I went ahead and installed it without any firm ware updates and I've been burning DVD back ups with no problems or coasters. I've used Princo DVD-R 1x, 2x, and 4x with no problems. Have also used LeadData 4x too with no problems. The burner has been able to identify the disc speed and burn at those speed. I would burn at 4x all the time if I could afford those 4x DVD-Rs. Have been able to watch copies in my computer as well as on some set tops like Apex, Panasonic, and Sony. I've successfully burnt DVD back ups, DVD ISO, DVD data, and the usual CDRs. Here's a list of tools used and my system info:

Rip: DVDShrink 2.3, DVDShrink 3 Beta 5, Smartripper 2.42
Burn: Nero Ultra 6.0.15

OS: Win2k SP4
MOBO: ECS K7S5A Pro
MEMRY: 1GB Samsung PC2100 CAS2
Video: Nvidia FX5600 w/128MB
Main Harddrive: WD1000jb (100GB) w/ 8mb buffer

I have not had the chance to try DVD+R yet nor any of the RWs. No vender at the computer show sells it and since DVD-R is an older standard with a higher compatiblity rate, I haven't had the need or desire to try DVD+R(W) just yet.

I still have no ideas why there are so many comments on people having to update their firmware. I've never had to and after a little over a month of use and over 50+ successful burns, the drive is still going strong. If your in the U.S. and see this burner for sell, I would highly recommend it.

Have just got this Writer. Installed as a Slave to my DVD-Rom drive on the 2nd IDE bus. Have got 2 HD's on the other IDE bus. Installed DVDXCopy Xpress 2.5 and tried to make a backup of my copy of Terminator 2. Said it all worked fine, but then tried to play in my Toshiba SD220E, and it came up with the warning saying "this is a backup etc etc etc", and then froze the machine. Had to hold the Power button down and turn it off! Using Mirror DVD-R media... not sure if anyone has used this........ Any Ideas???
Bargain on the DVD Writer too... £99.00 ex VAT from www.ebuyer.com... bundled with 25 x Mirror DVD-R for $146.00 Inc VAT and DELIVERY..

I have had this drive for about 3 weeks now, first used bulkpaq DVD+R (white tops) which burnt fine at 2.4x. I upgraded the firmware to the DRU500 2.0f and could then burn the bulkpaq +r's at 4x without problems. Datawrite red DVD-R's always start to stutter during the last 10 mins of a movie but seem to burn ok. I have burnt approx 20 bulkpaq orange DVD-R's and all burn perfectly at 4x using anydvd and clonedvd and play back perfectly on my denon dvd1500.
Excellent drive.

Initial use with 4xDatawrite classics, red with purple dye, burn't at 2xspeed but no coasters. Updated the firmware to 500a and then to 2.0f and now get 4xspeed with the same media. I have had no coasters so far(100's), apart from my incorrect use of software.
I burn DVD's with dvddecrypter, ulead dvd workshop, Nero 5.5.10 as DVD-Video, and all function well at 4xspeed.

Made a few coasters w/ Memorex DVD-Rs (version 2), so I updated the firmware and got a patch for the Ulead MovieMaker. Memorex replaced the disks w/ some labeled version 4.2 ... don't know if that made a difference or if the firmware change made a difference.

Haven't made a coaster since! Even with those cheap $1/disk DVD-Rs!

I've had this Sony DWU-10A for about 6 weeks. It burns very well on all the DVR+R media that I throw at it with no problem what so ever(TDK DVD+R at 4X, FUJIFILM DVD+R at 2.4X, IMATION DVD+R at 2.4X and VERBATIM DVD+RW at 2.4X, using Nero 5.5.10.35 as well as Nero 6.0.11).I thought the drive could also burn OK on DVD-R media, so I ordered some cheap DVD-Rs from Meritline. They had the HQ 4X DVD-Rs at $0.80 a piece... Seemed to be a good deal... However, these HQ DVD-Rs don't seem to be compatible with the Sony DWU-10A. I tried to burn first at 4X, it failed. At 2X, it failed again. Even at 1X, it still failed. All the burnings failed at about 1%... I would stick with the DVD+R media from now on, even though they are a bit more expensive than the -R discs.

update again
Store is toward good ending.
I bought some sony dvd-r today, I meant "SONY", just to try if my drive will burn dvd-r at least on its own brand. And, you know what it failed, just like the TDK and LiquidVideo ones. They all failed at exactly same stage:1%, and I always get message saying "Reset occurred". The message leads me start thinking it is neither the medium nor the drive, but the way I add the drive to the pc. Yes, I have untold things here, and here is the confession. I had put the drive in an enclosure, made it external drive. And I had modified the enclosure, so I can add another IDE device to the enclosure. Both devices are connected to pc. Finally I decide to give up the idea about external, and put it in the IDE bus, and then it started working on anything I throw to him now.
In fact, I had a cd,a cdrw, a dvd and the sony dvdrw drives all hooked the computer. the last 2 drives are connected via an use2.0 pci card. The pci card is ADS dual interface card, with NEC usb and Texas instruments fireware.
I don't know it is because of the enclosure , the usb chip set, or simply too much system resource shared. It got be one of these reasons, and I am not going to study it much more..since the drive is working now.

northstar, thanks for your information. I will have to start buying those disks now, brand name ones are not affordable.

Here is my update too.

Paca, i bought some Bulkpak (50 for £32)x2.0 - (blue or turquoise top)and have only made one bad disk out of 10 ive written, ive used these disks for backups of PS2 games and DVD films.

I have not had one problem with the 15 or so Datawrite x2.4 + (yellow and black top).

I have had two coaster out of the 50 or so Imation CDR's (possible my fault).

All in all very good results with my DRU-500A (flashed from the DW-U10A)- firmware used is 2.0f.

update to my comment a few days ago
I have big bad time with my DVD-R's on this drive. So far I have tried TKD DVD-R47A 2x and LiquidVideo dvd-r 2x with out any success. made about 7 coasters
And then DVD-RW at 2x is mix. I mainly use 2 software to burn the dvd's, nero6 and TMPGEnc DVD Author, TMPGEnc works better than the nero.
Finally I tried some TDK+R at 4X, so far I only burned one, it finished at 4x and my player read quickly.
My question is that if the drive supports dvd-r at all?

I' ve just ordered my this DVD Recorder its the same as the Sony DRU510A which is alot more expensive.

I'm going to buy it at http://www.savastore.com (Watford Electronics)

for £129 inc VAT, which is the best price i've seen it at!

I bought this drive 2 days ago with firmware1.1d. Nero didn't work with my 2X TDK dvd-rw at beginning, I had to use TMPGEnc DVD Author to burning the dvd. TMPGEnc finishes burning, but I wasn't able to playback with my APEX-2500 box. Then I decided to give one more try before I return it. I upgraded the firmware to 500-2f. NERO starts burning my TDK right after the upgrading, and the player, not right the way, but played. I guess I have to do something on the menu settings so will make player to pick up the menu a little easier.
The firmware upgrade is recommented for every one

Update to review below (NCIX.com and Princo 4x DVD-Rs)

I returned the Princo DVD-Rs to Memory Express and picked up some E3 Works 4x DVD-Rs along with some Memorex 4x DVD+Rs from Future Shop. I'm pleased to report that these discs burn at 4x fine on the DW-U10A. Heck, I even upgraded the firmware to 2.0f and all was well. My bad; looks like it's Princo's fault and not Sony's. The best news was that the E3 Works DVD-Rs were less expensive than the Princos! ($110 for 50 vs. $130 for 50) I don't see E3 Works listed in the DVD Media section... I'll have to get them to put up that brand!

Cheers.
