I tried to find a way to change the region code without success!
I could not find anything different from the methods given in the hack section.

I would hope someone could help me with this!

Thanks,

Just bought it today at futureshop for 60CAD.
Model 2.1 manufactured in Nov 2003
The hack as described in the hack section worked all fine and I can now watch my DVD Pal region 2 :-)

Regarding the dvd-drive itself. Its pretty cool. The screen is all fine, menu are ez to use, the video quality is not significantly lower than other more expensive drive...

Nice little player, very reliable so far. Image quality on component very good, lots of formats available for playback: (S)VCD, DVD, RAW MPG-1/2 from CD/CDRW/DVD+-RW, JPG, MP3. Very good error correction, sign of a quality optical assy. Plays PAL/NTSC discs on NTSC/PAL TV and is region free through a remote hack.

Only drawback is lack of WMA support, although it's listed here as supporting WMA. Maybe my firmware is newer and had WMA removed? Anyone able to play WMA on this player?

It's cheap, and it plays all my backed up DVD movies, no matter what. It even plays burns where Nero errored out. Great where you have a crappy TV and a crappy sound system like I do.

No problems with Ritek G04 DVD-R, Memorex DVD-R, Mitsumi DVD+R, generic DVD-R.

Good:
Small form factor, but with nice front display
Region free with a simple code from the remote
Menus are easy to navigate
Sharpness, brightness, contrast controllable from setup menu
Component, composite, S-video video outputs
Coaxial digital audio output
Inexpensive (CAD$70)
Good picture quality for price
Good quality PAL->NTSC conversion
Audio dynamic range settings available for night mode
Instruction manual is readable
Plays fine even with cheap quality DVD-R
Plays raw .mpg and .mp3 files off of DVD-R
JPEGs supported, with thumbnails for navigation
Screen saver
1 year warranty

Bad:
Mediocre aesthetics and build quality
Remote is better laid out than average for this price range, but not par with higher end remotes
Remote range is poor - most point remote directly at unit
Macrovision always present regardless if region free or not
No DTS support (but has Dolby Digital)
No optical digital audio output
No DVD-RAM or .vro file support
No QT or AVI file support
Plays miniDVD (DVD video on CD-R), but the drive seems too slow to read high bit-rate video without stuttering audio. (May work fine with lower bit-rate video, but I haven't tried.)
Not progressive scan

Conclusion:
The build quality is only mediocre, but overall it's still an excellent value, given its plethora of features and its ability to read even poor quality recordable DVD media, and it's very low price.

This player is highly recommended for those looking for an inexpensive feature rich interlaced player with multi-region support and good quality PAL->NTSC conversion.

I would pay 3 times as much for it if:
1) It support DTS and optical digital audio out
2) It had a better remote
3) It had better build quality (and aesthetics)

I would pay 4 times as much for it if it had all of the above and DVD-RAM support.

This player is the best thing since slice bread.

The image quality is really good and the size of the player is a huge plus. I have nothing bad to say about it.

The reason i bought it, is that some of my burned DVD's (i only use DVD-R from Pine 98%, Maxell 1.5% and Verbatim 0.5%)skip and freeze on my Toshiba SD3800. I tried everything, changing media, decoding software, burner, everything and the problem still remained. Now with Daytek all the movies that skipped on the Toshiba, are perfect on this one, No skipping or freezing.
The image quality is phenomenal.

Daytek P871 is a must for any user of burned media. The error correction on this machine is the best.

IT RULEZ!!

Pro: Plays EVERYTHINGS. Fast loading, take mp3, jpg and mpeg2 from subfolders of a Mitsumi+RW. Full directory name is displayed once you're in it, and 14 characters wide are displayed in the listing. Would certainly display more if there were more space. I saw jpg previews in the windows at the right of the directory listing. Can even do slide show too! Can fast forward in MP3s! Instant access when hitting "next" on the remote to play next mpeg videos!

I'm still playing with it but for now, it does it all. Download MPEG from the Internet, burn them on a DVD-RW and voila, you're in business. A dream has just come true. You can't see that there's a LCD display when it's turned off, but it's very nice and sharp once turned on. Well, a very nice little toy! GO GET ONE!

Con: Must point the remote at the player for it to work. Sometime, tray goes back it 2 secs after ejecting. Must eject again. Maybe i'm doing something wrong...

I was looking for something cheap to play SVCD's VCD's, DVD+-R's. My old Toshibia plays only store bough DVD's. So while I wait for the recorders to come down in price, I wanted somthing to fill the gap.

So I picked this up yesterday at FutureShop for $59.95. Tested it for DVD-R,VCD, SVCD. All worked no problem.

I do have some troubles with the machine. When I started it up, it would not accept any disc's. It would just keep opening and closing on it's own. Didn't matter whether it was a DVD\CD\or empty. Then all of sudden it accepted a disk, and worked great for 24 hours. Then today it started again opening and closing. But again it fixed it self, and seems to be fine.

Also I don't know what is up with the Audio controls on the DVD. It goes full blast when you power it back on, and at the high level the sound cracks, even when I turn it down then I have to crank my stereo, which produces poor sound. I don't really understand why they have a volume control on the DVD player.

The remote is ok, but it must be pointed right at the player for it to work.

Overall I guess it's an Ok little machine. But I think I will be returning it. The drawer opening and closing concerns me. I think I will invest a few more $$'s and try a different machine.

Once Nice thing about this player is it does have a 1 year warranty, which is one of the reasons I choose it over some of the other cheap models.

Bought a version 2.1 manufactured in Sept 2003.

Good:

The DVD quality is very good, closed to my Sony DVD player (Sony DVP-S300).
Can play VCD, CD-R, MP3 and more........
LCD screen is cool and very informative.
It has Component Video.
It also has extra audio output.
There is volume control on the remote that you can turn down the volume or mute.

Need Improvement:

You can zoom up to 4x, however, the 4x indicator stay on the top right corner forever. You got no way to remove it. It is just the perfect place to block your view.
There is no support in Daytek.ca website. The manual is just enough to let you know how this works.
The remote stated in the manual can work within 30 degree of the receiver's sensor. However, I don't have a problem with that. When you turn off the power button of the player, your remote is useless.
Loading disc take a few seconds longer than my Sony DVP-S300.

Small and cheap and played many formats was appealing, but, had this a week and taking it back for the Aspire AD-900 becasue it's on sale now for the same price. The Daytek was very slow loading, and for a few of my newer movies with really interactive menus, it seems to not play the animation and just freezes on a black screen... may be a defective player, or, just junk... but not going to trade in for another to fin out it's just the player.

This player itself is very small in physical size. Design is simple but it looks alright!
Most importantly,,, this player is packed with features.

I have tried DVD-MP3, MP3 upto 320Kbps. But in the browser it shows as 319kbps. MPEG2 directly burnt on DVD plays without a problem as well. (Maxell DVD+RW & Maxell DVD-RW) Both disc works without a problem!
But there was a difference between +RW & -RW. -RW media ran smoother. +RW played everything perfectly but I could hear disc spin/seeking data (if I seat next to player). Also,,, when playing MP3 off DVD+RW I get a very short pause when I browse to different folders. -RW did not have any pause when browsing.

Movie on DVD-R (Princo 4x whitetop) works seemlessly. DVD+R (Memorex 4x) worked great, DVD+R burnt as DVD-ROM played great too.

Yes, both +/- works great with this player. But +R/+RW media does take bit more seeking for this player, than again my Pioneer PC-DVD drive official does not support +R/RW but it still reads it but it really spins/work? to read the data off the disc resulting in bit of spin noise.
Over all, it is a great DVD Player for $69 CDN.

*Remote is cheap looking but it works, so no complain./ Player itself is manufactered in Octorber 2003, made in CHINA (obviously for its price)

Only tried Memorex Black CD-Rs so far. Burned a few VCDs and SVCDs with VCDEasy's BIN/CUE creation and Alcohol 120%. Still VCD menus work just fine. Played an XVCD at 1400 kbps video with no problems. The only other features I've really tested are the MP3, JPEG, and MPEG-1 ISO. Burned those with Nero, ISO 9660 at ISO Level 2, Mode 1, with Joliet and no relaxed restrictions. No probs there, though only a few of the filenames' characters are shown on-screen in the browser (8, I believe). JPEG on CD just brings up a full-screen view of the image when you click on it in the file browser. I should note, though, that browsing through the MP3 CD while playing a song caused it to pause and resume whenever I changed folders.

Other than that, the annoying issue with the remote not picking up every key pressed was present. Also, the machine has a volume option for some reason. The problem there is that it doesn't remember what you had it set at when you turn the player off, so it goes right back up to the maximum (which sounds distorted) when you turn it back on. What I did like was that it displayed a value like "01/03" for the audio track, subtitle, etc. that you're on when you switch them. I wish my other player did that, rather than just giving the language name.

Overall, I'm very pleased, though I haven't tested all that many features yet.

So far it has played everything that I've thrown at it, which is great. I had an old VCD for which I've only ever been able to find one player that worked, but this one did it without any problems. Also works with some DVDs that a friend burned for me that he marked "Computer Only" because they wouldn't work in any of his five player.

Great unit for the price.

So far this is the best DVD Player I could purchase in a store that I could return it to if I didn't like it (ie. Future Shop, Best Buy - in Toronto, Canada.) It plays EVERYTHING I tried EXCEPT selectable SVCD subtitles. CD/RW/DVDR/RW/MP3/VCD/SVCD and most important of all it plays NTSC/PAL. Something that's VERY rare to find at a store like Future Shop. As a matter of fact, it's the ONLY dvd player that Future Shop sells which does NTSC/PAL conversion. And for $70 CDN, this is an awesome deal!

Only complaints I have are minor and are as follows:

1) Selectable SVCD subtitles (too bad!)
2) MP3 long filename support
3) The zoom feature, 2x, etc..leaves a little blue frame window open throughout the entire movie which just says 2X or whatever you're zoomed in at. You can't turn this off! It will always be on the screen. Annoying.

On this site, I noticed it says it plays Selectable SVCD subtitles. It's NOT true!!! I've downloaded the samples from this site and read all articles on troubleshooting this but none of them enabled svcd subtitle support. Only DVD subtitles work. And the only SVCD subtitles you'll get is if the movie has permanent subtitles.

The manual clearly says that there is subtitle support but for DVD's only!!

I made a few of my own svcd's with SVCD and CVD subtitles but none of them show the subs on this dvd player. I also tried with PBC turned on/off. I used VCDEasy, Nero, and they just don't work. I tried everything I know and everything I could find regarding this on the Internet.

I'd be more than happy to hear if any of you got it to work and if so, how...perhaps sending the sample that works for you??? If it works for me, I'll write back and say this is the BEST dvd player for the money!!

Btw, I'm very computer literate so this is not some shmuck who doesn't know how to figure things out or how to even use a computer to its fullest :-)

Otherwise, excellent dvd player and have recommended it to my family and friends. Now we all have the same one ;-) No, I do not work for Daytek. I just have yet to find a dvdplayer that plays more than this at $70 (or even near $70) dollars!

I walk in to futureshop, straight to the DVD player section. I right away see boxes and boxes of the daytek.

Looking at the Daytek, its a great little artpiece but don't let the looks fool you. After rushing home and borrowing a DVD from my friend to check this bad boy out, I was so happy. I first looked to see what the setup menu was like. Very very nice, all icon based and user friendly. I also notice there's a LCD screen located behind the front mirror. It lights up fluorescent blue. Very appealing.

Now onto the performance, this is where the unit really lacks. My friend let me borrow different formats which consisted of everything, dvd's,r,rw,cd-rs,mp3,photocd,etc. I tried every CD he gave me and none of them hiccuped. Best thing is, it plays RAW mpeg files. I called him up and told him the news. He wants another player for his bedroom, so after hearing my good reviews he ran over to futureshop and picked one up also.

Now, for my first movie I watched The Matrix (friend wouldn't let me borrow part 2. I sat there giggling, the sound and picture quality is just as good as any other player. In fact, my friend came over to check it out. He says its the same as his sony $300.

So 45 min. into the movie I'm thinking to myself, maybe I should check out the other features of this player. First thing I tried was the volume control. After pressing the button a couple of times the DVD player froze. It wouldn't even turn off from the remote. I had to unplug, plug in maybe 3 or 4 times to get it to work. I thought maybe it was a glitch or something.

Then I tried the fast forward button (not the next scene button). It worked for a few times and then the DVD player froze again.AHHHHHH!!!. So mad, this time the screen became a rainbow scrambled colour. It then took another 4-5 tries this time to get the player to start again.

After I got it started, I wanted to try the zoom button this time. Its still amazing quality at 4x zoom but after using it a few times the picture was becoming scrambled and once again, it froze. Took me many tries to start it.

This time I said I'm not going to touch anything because I want to finish watching the movie. I then called up my friend and told him the news. Since we live close to each other, we tried out his DVD player and it had the exact same problems as mine.

After watching The Matrix, I pressed stop and DVD player ejected the cd by itself than froze. I then had to push in the tray with my hand because it wouldn't close with the eject button even after unplugging it many times.

Anyway, after going through this ordeal, I returned it a few days later and picked up a Philips mx1060D home theatre system for $200cdn. I couldn't be more happier. It is macrovision free and regionfree!!.

I also took internal pics of the daytek trying to figure out a hack for region-free but gave up after awhile. If you want a link to pics, post her and lemme know.

This would be one awesome player only if it didn't have these freezing problems.

This player was definately worth every penny I paid for it; I use it constantly for watching movies with no problems. However, I would have paid more to fix a couple of small problems. First of all, the remote isn't powerful enough (or doesn't have a good enough receiver) and is often non-responsive.

Secondly, the SVCD decoding is not perfect. Certain SVCDs I have played become garbled after a scene change. I would estimate about 5% of my discs have this problem. The fix for this was to hit fastward and skip a couple of frames and then it goes away. It's annoying, but it does work with that bit of prompting.

Comments:
For those interested in the All-Region remote-control hack, as the disk is loading (going in the player), keep pressing the '1' button on the remote control. I tried this on my Region 3 PAL DVD last night and it worked. I think this hack only allows you to watch the movie, but doesn't give you access to the menus and any extra features.

I purchased it for $70 Cdn in a Toronto Future Shop.

When I tried playing a MP3 CD with the machine, there are numerous files that are on the CD, but did not show on the DVD player, not sure if it has to do with the file name's size.

Also, when I tried accessing a folder with raw mpeg files, it crashed on me.

Other than that, the machine is excellent for the price.
