DVDFab HD Decrypter

DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab "DVD to DVD" and DVDFab "Blu-ray to Blu-ray". It copies entire DVD/Blu-ray movie to hard drive, and removes all the DVD protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) and part of Blu-ray protections (AACS, BD+, RC, UOPS and BD-Live) while copying. NOTE! The decryption, DVD to HDD and Blu-ray to HDD, is FREE, if you want more features then it's a trialware. And it may take 1-2 months until it supports NEW DVD releases.

If you disregard the trolling comment [as you should], I think everyone who's tried it agrees that for decrypting discs, DVDFab generally works, period. That in itself is fairly remarkable given that the big Hollywood studios now look at their DVD market as a nuisance, being far more concerned about DRM than whether the disc even plays -- Disney apparently even strips menus, subs, & CC out of their special, rental DVDs (Up), & who knows what out of their retail versions. Yet as the studios devise all sorts of ways to break their DVDs, fengtao keeps working constantly to release new versions to keep up with them. It takes time & money to do that, & apparently there are now sites selling illegal versions of DVDFab, so they're experimenting with ways to sell more copies -- a while back they had problems with new license-related code. Now if you use the latest free version, if/when it detects certain DVDs, a message tells you to wait for future versions or something like that, so it makes a difference whether you license the app or not -- up till now there was no reason to ever pay if all you used was the decryption. Whether that works out & stays in DVDFab time will tell. The latest DVD *Rippers* I've seen sold [not counting AnyDVD] don't decrypt the disc at all, but re-record the playing video -- many users don't know about DVDFab &/or don't notice the difference -- so DVDFab has some competition that puts more effort into sales/marketing & less keeping up with the latest DVDs. Users who feel they *have* to buy something, may choose something else besides DVDFab. Beyond decrypting discs, DVDFab also has quite a few conversion features -- whether or not you feel it's worth it, there are conversion-only apps selling for more... there is free software to do most any conversion (sometimes better), but the free stuff can also be harder to use, &/or not play nice with other apps you have installed. One thing DVDFab could use is a good manual &/or help file -- another is even a part-time DVDFab-staffed support forum, since user &/or fan mods are often knowledgeable & accurate, but seldom customer service trained or oriented, & this is something DVDFab's competition is working on.

I believe Igor88 is incorrect is saying DVDFab removes the layer break, though the mistake is understandable... the layer break is not included, not a part of the files on a DVD, & apparently not a part of an ISO itself. ImgBurn can/will keep the layer break intact in it's MDS file that accompanies an ISO you make from the DVD, but if you open/burn just the ISO, it's not there -- ImgBurn then asks you to select it, suggesting a break based on a cell's seamless flag not being set.

Some real idiot comments below, by (need I say?) idiots. Nothing has changed in this software. It keeps getting updated as per normal. If you urgently want the updates for your new stupid new-release Hollywood crap DVDs, then bloody pay for it if those moronic stupid glamshit movies mean so much to you, and avoid the month delay or whatever it is. Frankly I have no sympathy for moronic assholes who get so horny over Hollywood's latest "blockbuster" shit. Go get a life.

*Apologies to the person who suggested a warning about scratches on DVD, that is a good idea.

The current videohelp.com description (see above) of this software is now inaccurate. Fengtao recently changed all of their nomenclature which is very confusing. There are now effectively three versions: trialware (30 days), payware (you pay for a license), and free(cripple)ware. All are loosely called DVDFab, but that seems to particularly apply to the trialware and payware. Supposedly trialware and payware have the same functionality, except after you buy the license all restrictions are removed. The free(cripple)ware is also known as DVDFab HD Decrypter, but it is no longer a simplified version of DVDFab. All versions are the same software, installed from the same .exe file. The installation .exe files are downloaded from different links and have different names, but they're actually the same. That seems deceptive, perhaps a commercial ploy, or maybe simply lethargy in their administrative and development processes. The functionality of the free(cripple)ware is supposedly the same as the trialware and payware, except it blocks ripping of recent movies for about 60 days (they say). However in my experience the free(cripple)ware is now poorly designed, uses obscure and poorly defined nomenclature, has only incomplete and out-of-date operating instructions, and is somewhat buggy and unreliable. That's unfortunate because it was previously a useful free utility for ripping almost all DVD movies. In my opinion DVDFab is greatly overpriced and I recommend against purchase.

Overall, DVDFab is not bad. Normally it rips discs without problems. However, the one annoyance is if a disc is not perfectly clean, it will assume the disc is scratched and skip sections of the movie without telling me. For this reason, DVDFab is normally not me first choice. If there are errors, please tell me, so I can try cleaning the disc! First I try DVDShrink, which works for the average DVD. If that fails I try Ripit4me. If neither of those programs can copy the disc even after several cleanings, I then try DVDFab. The only time DVDFab has failed completely is with dithat will not play in my DVD player.

I think $40 is a fair price for this program, and I would probably buy it if it had a simple pop-up to alert me to try cleaning the disc.

One gripe I have with this program (am currently using the free version) is that it removes the layer break when you're copying a dual-layer DVD to an .iso file even when you ask it not to by removing the checkmark beside "Remove layer break" under Common Settings. That's a surprising oversight for a program that costs as much as this ($50 for a 1 year license just to use the DVD functions).

My "go to" programs for backing up DVDs have until lately been DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter, but when I found I had trouble backing up the full disc of the latest Rambo movie, I tried this program out and it worked like a charm.

However, I just tried to back up the 4-disc Criterion Collection release of The Last Emperor, and found that:

1. On disc 1 of the set, I get a CRC error from ImgBurn when burning the rip from DVDFab to a Verbatim DL disc (though if I click "retry" a few times, the disc does finish, finalize, and pass verification). These types of errors, I've come to find out, are usually indicative of some sort of a sneaky data protection scheme on the source disc. The same thing happened when I burned an .iso of the same disc that was made using RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter. In other words, DVD Fab did no better than DVD Decrypter on this disc.

2. On disc 3 of the set, I got so many CRC errors while trying to burn the output from DVDFab that the burn failed midway through and could not be finished and finalized.

I don't know exactly what the problem is, but it seems as though there's something about these two discs (particular disc 3) that is messing DVDFab up; maybe a protection that DVDFab isn't able to break.

I had another experience where DVDFab was unable to copy a disc that had a nasty scratch, but DVD Shrink had no problem copying it at all.

The free version of DVD Fab is a useful addition to one's toolkit, since it can deal with protection schemes with which DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can't, not having been updated in a number of years. So it's good for the occasional troublesome DVD like Rambo, and it's also useful for getting data on the protection schemes used on a DVD before trying to back it up, potentially saving you from making coasters from expensive DL blanks. However, as a paid program, I don't think DVD Fab is worth what they're asking for it, especially given the problems outlined above and the fact that DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me, which are both free, can deal with about 80% of the discs out there, despite their age.

I only gave the program an 8 on "ease of use" because although it is easy to use, I found the interface almost too dumbed down, which ironically made it harder to use. Instead of using a standard Windows interface, with all of the menus made clearly available up top, it took me a while to figure out how to get to the program's settings, or that you even could change the settings.

I also noticed on DVDFab's website that they give you 20% off if you buy the program by such and such a date. Thing is, when "such and such" a date [fill in the blank] rolls around, the offer is always renewed for another x amount of weeks. In other words, they're using deceptive marketing practices to try to get you to buy the program RIGHT NOW. I find such practices rather insulting myself. If a 1 year license really only costs $40, then just say so, instead of charging $50 and telling people you're giving them a 20% discount for a "limited time." If you want to improve sales, then concentrate on developing a loyal customer base by improving the quality of your software, instead of using underhanded sales gimmicks like this.

For standard DVDs the program is useful. There are better alternatives, however. I am amazed that problems with PathPlayer still exist. The software has a setting for it to be turned off, turned on, or for the program to decide and turn it on when necessary. The latter option is the default setting yet time and time again I see people having issues where it is recommended that they either turn PathPlayer always on or turn it always off. The technology is extremely buggy if the default program settings don't work.

BluRay support is still in its infancy and the price for the BluRay option is simply outrageous. The number of BluRay discs supported is limited by the current capabilities of the program. The experimental support for MKB 14 and The Haunting In Connecticut is exactly as listed. It does nothing more than cause DVDFab 6.0.3.5 to crash either during or upon the completion of the scanning of the BluRay disc.

For those using the free version of the software just to handle DVDs the program is worth being free although the PathPlayer issues make the user have to know more and adjust the settings quite often. BluRay support in the paid version just isn't up to snuff.

Still totally fails to do anything with my Bluray drive. Fails to even see my drive let along do anything with it. If you want this tool to copy your bluray disc, you are better off putting the bluray disk on the top of a Xerox machine to get a copy. ;) This is totally useless by all definition of the word.

Product is highly rated but I'm not commenting about the product but rather the access page. Sometimes there is a direct link to betas from VH and that's no problem but many times the link goes to this page
http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm

Doesn't someone on the DVDFAB site design team notice that it's hard to read white letters on pale blue/gray background or dark lettering on a dark blue background? This is obviously not your intention but your doing a good job of hiding the links.

DVDFab Decrypter may have a worrisome "feature":

In WinXP, it excludes itself from Data Execution Prevention (DEP), allowing it to do *something* in the background. I don't know what that might be, but I sure don't like it, since I am NOT given any sort of warning of this self-exclusion.

As Microsoft explains: "Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats."

This COULD be viewed as a malicious action by the developer, since there is no obvious reason why DVDFab Decrypter needs to be excluded from DEP's protection. Someone with a lot more knowledge about such matters than I would have to comment further on it, but I sure am suspicious.

To check your WinXP system:

o Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Data Execution Prevention

If you use DVDFab Decrypter, you may find it in the list of programs to be excluded from DEP . . . and then you may want to ask "Why?"
