DVDFab HD Decrypter |
DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab "DVD to DVD" and DVDFab "Blu-ray to Blu-ray". It copies entire DVD/Blu-ray movie to hard drive, and removes all the DVD protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) and part of Blu-ray protections (AACS, BD+, RC, UOPS and BD-Live) while copying. NOTE! The decryption, DVD to HDD and Blu-ray to HDD, is FREE, if you want more features then it's a trialware.

One gripe I have with this program (am currently using the free version) is that it removes the layer break when you're copying a dual-layer DVD to an .iso file even when you ask it not to by removing the checkmark beside "Remove layer break" under Common Settings. That's a surprising oversight for a program that costs as much as this ($50 for a 1 year license just to use the DVD functions). My "go to" programs for backing up DVDs have until lately been DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter, but when I found I had trouble backing up the full disc of the latest Rambo movie, I tried this program out and it worked like a charm. However, I just tried to back up the 4-disc Criterion Collection release of The Last Emperor, and found that: 1. On disc 1 of the set, I get a CRC error from ImgBurn when burning the rip from DVDFab to a Verbatim DL disc (though if I click "retry" a few times, the disc does finish, finalize, and pass verification). These types of errors, I've come to find out, are usually indicative of some sort of a sneaky data protection scheme on the source disc. The same thing happened when I burned an .iso of the same disc that was made using RipIt4Me/DVD Decrypter. In other words, DVD Fab did no better than DVD Decrypter on this disc. 2. On disc 3 of the set, I got so many CRC errors while trying to burn the output from DVDFab that the burn failed midway through and could not be finished and finalized. I don't know exactly what the problem is, but it seems as though there's something about these two discs (particular disc 3) that is messing DVDFab up; maybe a protection that DVDFab isn't able to break. I had another experience where DVDFab was unable to copy a disc that had a nasty scratch, but DVD Shrink had no problem copying it at all. The free version of DVD Fab is a useful addition to one's toolkit, since it can deal with protection schemes with which DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can't, not having been updated in a number of years. So it's good for the occasional troublesome DVD like Rambo, and it's also useful for getting data on the protection schemes used on a DVD before trying to back it up, potentially saving you from making coasters from expensive DL blanks. However, as a paid program, I don't think DVD Fab is worth what they're asking for it, especially given the problems outlined above and the fact that DVD Shrink and RipIt4Me, which are both free, can deal with about 80% of the discs out there, despite their age. I only gave the program an 8 on "ease of use" because although it is easy to use, I found the interface almost too dumbed down, which ironically made it harder to use. Instead of using a standard Windows interface, with all of the menus made clearly available up top, it took me a while to figure out how to get to the program's settings, or that you even could change the settings. I also noticed on DVDFab's website that they give you 20% off if you buy the program by such and such a date. Thing is, when "such and such" a date [fill in the blank] rolls around, the offer is always renewed for another x amount of weeks. In other words, they're using deceptive marketing practices to try to get you to buy the program RIGHT NOW. I find such practices rather insulting myself. If a 1 year license really only costs $40, then just say so, instead of charging $50 and telling people you're giving them a 20% discount for a "limited time." If you want to improve sales, then concentrate on developing a loyal customer base by improving the quality of your software, instead of using underhanded sales gimmicks like this.

For standard DVDs the program is useful. There are better alternatives, however. I am amazed that problems with PathPlayer still exist. The software has a setting for it to be turned off, turned on, or for the program to decide and turn it on when necessary. The latter option is the default setting yet time and time again I see people having issues where it is recommended that they either turn PathPlayer always on or turn it always off. The technology is extremely buggy if the default program settings don't work. BluRay support is still in its infancy and the price for the BluRay option is simply outrageous. The number of BluRay discs supported is limited by the current capabilities of the program. The experimental support for MKB 14 and The Haunting In Connecticut is exactly as listed. It does nothing more than cause DVDFab 6.0.3.5 to crash either during or upon the completion of the scanning of the BluRay disc. For those using the free version of the software just to handle DVDs the program is worth being free although the PathPlayer issues make the user have to know more and adjust the settings quite often. BluRay support in the paid version just isn't up to snuff.

Still won't open a Haunting In Connecticut Blu ray. I'm waiting to see who figures it out first- These guys or the any hddvd fellows! This is still a good program but I use the latter. Downloaded because the update said the beta would open my disc--HIC--

I have been using this since DVDFab 2, and that was a long time ago. The development over the years has increased greatly. I will always be a DVDfab user.

I have been using DVDFab HD Decrypter (free version) for years without a single issue, the scores I gave this software speak for themselves.
|
|||||||||||||||
Starting with version 5115 it supports HD-DVD. I have been able to rip my HD-DVD's to my HD without problems. It even seems faster than AnyDVD and it's free.

great for dvd's, worthless for blu-ray

Excellent tool, been using this since rip it 4 me ceased development, never looked back, dealt with everything I've thrown at it, never had a coaster, never had a problem. keep up the good work, cheers guys.

Still totally fails to do anything with my Bluray drive. Fails to even see my drive let along do anything with it. If you want this tool to copy your bluray disc, you are better off putting the bluray disk on the top of a Xerox machine to get a copy. ;) This is totally useless by all definition of the word.

Will this program actually ever work with Blu-Ray and HD like it claims to? Try and ask them that you will get every excuse in the book. Isn’t fouls advertising and or misleading the consumer against the law?

Problem with Windows 2008 Server(60-day Trial). Every disk report IFO error. The same disks were tested in other machine with Vista Home and XP and no problem with them.

Using AVG ver.7.5 I also get a virus warning stating Crash Rpt dll is a Trojan.

hi this version says it has a virus. anybody else ?

Product is highly rated but I'm not commenting about the product but rather the access page. Sometimes there is a direct link to betas from VH and that's no problem but many times the link goes to this page http://www.dvdfab.com/free.htm Doesn't someone on the DVDFAB site design team notice that it's hard to read white letters on pale blue/gray background or dark lettering on a dark blue background? This is obviously not your intention but your doing a good job of hiding the links.

The DEP exception was added in 2007. "3.1.5.5 Beta (Aug 4, 2007) - New: Added DVDFab to DEP exception list on Windows XP/Vista, to avoid crash problem at startup in certain cases."
|
|||||||||||||||
I just checked my system and DVDFab I listed under the DEP exceptions... and VideoReDo is NOT. Add my name to the list of people wondering about this....
|
|||||||||||||||
To comment below, yes I just looked and it is listed in DEP exceptions - but so is Video ReDo? I tend to trust VideoReDo, so I suspect there is an explanation for this. I would like to hear from someone with more technical know-how tho'.

DVDFab Decrypter may have a worrisome "feature": In WinXP, it excludes itself from Data Execution Prevention (DEP), allowing it to do *something* in the background. I don't know what that might be, but I sure don't like it, since I am NOT given any sort of warning of this self-exclusion. As Microsoft explains: "Data Execution Prevention (DEP) helps protect against damage from viruses and other security threats." This COULD be viewed as a malicious action by the developer, since there is no obvious reason why DVDFab Decrypter needs to be excluded from DEP's protection. Someone with a lot more knowledge about such matters than I would have to comment further on it, but I sure am suspicious. To check your WinXP system: o Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance, Settings, Data Execution Prevention If you use DVDFab Decrypter, you may find it in the list of programs to be excluded from DEP . . . and then you may want to ask "Why?"

Awesome piece of software. Glad I purchased it. Works pretty good with Linux / Wine too.

Great free tool that does what I need when backing up my DVD's. I've never had a problem with this software was wasn't my fault. I'm grateful for the generosity of all the developers out there. There is a free tool for most of my needs and I appreciate that.

Wanna Buy It , Be My Guest . I Don't ! Now that it's trial-ware(?), and becoming a pain to try , I'm staying away from it . It locks the auto-run on my dvd rom and disables Nero (which I use for Nero Recode/a dvd shrink replacement , which works very well). Trial-Ware , what a joke . They should of left the way it was ... 'cause I was almost ready to dish out Euros for this , until I gave their "Trial-Ware" a shot . Blu-Ray HD ripping/decryption is not functional . And it Under-performs compared to past versions . NOTE : STAY AWAY FROM INSTALLING VSO BURNING ENGINE ! You'll regret it.

An excellent tool for decrypting DVD - but a lousy tool for decrypting Blu-ray (and HD-DVD) discs. The effective unreliability of DVDFab HD Decrypter to actually 'see', let alone decrypt, HD discs across a range of brand-name HD players, is well documented in DVDFab's own forums. DVDFab does not 'see' Blu-ray or HD-DVD discs on the LG GGC-H20L yet AnyDVD has no problem both seeing and decrypting HD discs on the samedrive (and no, I do not attempt to run DVDFab while AnyDVD is active). At the time of writing (22 June 2008), it is unclear whether DVDFabHD can actually decrypt Blu-ray discs or not.

This tool is so cool, rips DVDs in minutes. Have had only one problem with it, when I verify files that I have ripped i get error messages, i click Continue and it goes on its merry way...dont understand why I get these messages because when I play the DVD it looks fine. oh well, anyways, great product, love the updates.

Great tool that works as described. I use the Platinum version, for full functionality. This works great for every movie back-up, and ipod compression. I especially enjoy the ability to copy only the main movie, with the decryption/compression to a 4.5GB DVD typically being in the 90% to 100% quality. Eliminating the need for expensive DL discs. This tool works great with ImgBurn!
