Software: DVD Flick
User review: DVDFlick is the simplest and best "DVD Maker". It's free and quality is equal to any of the 10 other apps (both free- and costware) that I've tried.

DVDFlick is actually a front end to ffmpeg, dvdauthor and other geek tools, ffmpeg being the best open source video/audio converter (primarily because it doesn't rely on external codecs, and quality and flexibility is top tier).

You can be encoding/burning within 1 minute, after you've chosen your settings the first time. I have burned over 100 anime DVDs with this app.

The way I use it is, I encode an entire anime series at once, then author in another app. Instead of using the standard media size settings, I calculate average episode size for the number of episodes per disc (5 eps X 660Mb per ep), then set a Custom total size (24 eps = 15840 Mb). DVDFlick sets all the parameters from there. I do verify the aspect ratio in each title, because the parameter may not be set in the video file. As for one time (save as default) settings, Encoder Priority is always set to Idle, then choose Fast render with Second Pass (or Best with one pass, but is slower). Verify NTSC or PAL.

Click Create DVD and keep right on working on my PC. A few hours later (about 25 minutes per episode), I rename the VOBs to MPG and load into DVD Architect for custom authoring and burning.

The only problem container I've encountered is MKV with soft subtitles. Often these do not render, but it's an MKV problem (as usual) not with DVDFlick.

For MKVs with subtitles that fail, I extract the subs files, convert the video/audio into AVI (AlltoAVI), then add the subs file manually in DVDFlick. If necessary, I use Subtitle Workshop to convert the subs file format and correct overlap errors in it, because DVDFlick will not handle overlap errors (head its warning).

For any other file format, this application is absolutely the most intuitive yet most powerful of the end user DVD makers.
