What's New in Total Recorder V7.0
Total Recorder is now supplied with a new kernel-mode driver:

- It also resolves the problem of sound distortion due to incompatibility with Direct Sound. In particular, this resolves the problem of using Total Recorder with Skype 3.x

New features implemented in Total Recorder V7.0:

for Standard Edition
- Ability to export/import Total Recorder's configuration settings or scheduled jobs. This feature is useful if you need to reinstall your system, move Total Recorder from one computer to another, or you would like to have a backup copy.
- Renaming of files from a playlist using tag information.
- Higher speed and better file compression when encoding files to FLAC format due to the use of the latest version of FLAC sources.
- Other enhancements.

for Professional Edition
- All updates which are included in the Standard Edition.
- Playback and background recording (capturing) of Internet-broadcasts in MP3, WMA, and Ogg Vorbis formats .
- Time Shift feature. This feature lets you record an audio file and listen to it (from any position) while the file is being recorded.
- Support for CUE-sheet files.Total Recorder lets you create cue-points, which can be used for splitting a file afterwards. Cue points can be created manually (e.g. to make a bookmark in a sound file), or automatically during a recording session (based on pause reduction, changes of clip info in an external player, etc.), or while capturing an Internet transmission and the information about a track changes.
- Other enhancements.

I must point out that it can do 32-bit floating point and everything below. Very importantly it edits compressed audio without re-encoding, compared to Audacity and anything else I've tried.
More notably here, it can include video processing, for $75. Formats except for mp4, except it can read m4a within mp4 input.

Review by GeoSlv on Oct 17, 2016 Version: 7.1 OS: Windows 8 Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

This tool though cumbersome, isn't unlike the other screen capture tools in the same caliber (Tunebite, Snagit), but Total Recorder actually delivers excellent quality. It does use system resources very heavily, unlike Tunebite, but if you need to do a screen capture of a video and maintain smooth motion, good sound clarity and overall robustness in a product, I recommend TR. I did have some crashing issues, and a thermal shutdown at one point (probably time for me to get that chipset heatsink/fan or do something about my AMD 780G board which keeps trying to fry my Athlon 64 X2 5000+, but backs off (thank goodness!) -- so with my "processor power" maximum now set back at 85%, system seems stable.

Review by cyclometric on Aug 11, 2008 Version: 7.0 OS: Vista Ease of use: 4/10 Functionality: 7/10 Value for money: 8/10 Overall: 9/10

Just got version 6 (been a user since ver. 4) and used it to transcribe some Audible Format books to MP3 at 8X realtime. The accelerate mode also works with WinAmp streams.

Review by olyteddy on Jul 30, 2006 Version: 6 OS: WinXP Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 9/10

This tool is ideal for anyone wanting to capture audio from LP,cassette or even whatever you can hear coming out of your speakers. It has many configuration options to tweak, insuring you have the best quality capture. It uses its own driver and gives you the option of limiting the volume to 94% (-1dB) to help avoid clipping.
You could choose the freeware Audacity to record if you wish but I find for the small registration fee that this tool is worth every penny.
