Upgraded firmware to 1.64 so I could use 4x media. Complete failure! Trie Datasafe RICOHJPNW11 +RW disc. Seemd to write a DVD fine with Moviefactory, but it was unreadable on anything! Failed to format disc for PC use. Couldnt erase either disc! Anyone had simlilar problems I would like to know. Drive works OK with 2.4 media - as long as you are careful about what the dye used is!

For me a good burner. My first one came with faulty sw cd.
This was swapped by the supplier for a new one. Since then I burned several hundreds of +R and +RW never any problem.
Just recently upgraded with Philips Firmware 1.64, because the 2.4 speeds are difficult to get and my 1.29 firmware didn't support 4 or 8 speed dvd. A shame that 4 times burning is not supported in the newer sw. Thats why I rate it 9. Works great in combination with the right software and settings. A lot of crappy software/interfaces on the market. I love DVD Bitsetter, Nero, DVD shrink and Decrypter!

This drive worked great, nut after changing the region code 5 times, it froze on region 2. The manufacturer says it is to stop piracy. Who made them the Law??? (the real irony here is I am a movie producer that needs region free to be able to view the pre release copys of MY movies in other territories)Phillips said they have no way to reset the drive, and I tried using a hack from this site, but it crashed my drive completely. Needless to say I will never by another Phillips product again.

Just a refresh, have just flashed drive to Ver1.51. great flash program works in Windows. Just as well for me as I have XP with NTFS files system hard drive.Drive still working and am burning a disk as I type this. If I have any problems with this firmware I will post on the Forums.

Had this drive since November last year. I haven't burnt that many disks yet due to the high price of the media, but what I have burnt have all worked well. Only one coaster so far and that was due to the data I was burning. I am going to upgrade the firmware to 1.51 in the next couple of days and I will repost with verdict on performance upgrade if any.

Superb drive .. the idiot below with 6/6 failures doesn't seem to realize that his problem was the vob's he was trying to burn and not the drive !! Very reliable !

This burner works great.. no problems.

I bought this DVD-writer one month ago. Good hardware. DVD+R offers better compatibility with standalone players. However on the 20 I burned, 4 coaster (1 Philips media, 3 Optodisc). No problems with DVD+RW and formatting only takes 1-2 minutes !
I upgraded the firmware to 1.51 (which should permit to burn DVD+R at 4x, not yet tested). Software: MyDVD is very basic.

Had this a few months now, no problems at all! Loves every kind of DVD+R disc i throw at it and that was before a firmware upgrade. Definately recommended!

I have had this writer for 6 months, after a few problems with software and media it is now the dogs doo daa's

for dvd video i use ulead workshop to make and image and burn with gear pro (45 dvd's and not one coaster)
to backup dvd's (not films if you no what i mean) Stomp mycd pro consol based dvds (no failures)

dvd media i have found that the new datawrite dvd+r discs from digital promotions(25 for £35 delivered) work on everything i have tried them on

The drive works, despite the fact that it is philips. The software needs to be dealt with very carefully and before you start creating a video make sure that you have a large section of free disc space (15Gb as a bare minimum).
I purchased the drive yesterday at PC World(UK). Cost £219.00 inc VAT.
Media used is both the supplied Philips CD+RW and Imation CD+RW 10pack for £39.99.
The resultant DVD works on my Philips DVD 711, and that means I get top marks from the wife who thinks that splashing out £219 on a little box borders on insanity, when there are plenty of cushions required from the soft furnishing shop.
Now the software, because if you are new to this sort of thing you are going to love Sonic MyDVD - it is very simple and very basic and is just right for my 12 year old, who is teaching me how to burn a DVD video. It has a very simple wizard that takes you through things step by step.It isn't all singing and dancing software, but it suits an absolute novice like me, who doesn't know about frame rates, YUV and PAL.I will move on to the United Artists type of Editing Suite when I feel more confident.
In-CD - (Remove any other similar software first). This software is for using your DVD as a floppy drive, it isn't as good as Adaptec Direct CD (Now known as Roxio)and it is painfully slow up on Windows XP Pro.Use Direct CD if you know where to get a copy.
Do not use if you can avoid it.
Nero Burning ROM & Nero Express - okay, but it doesn't appear to be to stable and I am concerned about getting expensive coasters. If you are using this software, make sure Direct CD doesn't cause any conflicts.I was using Nero before I installed the version supplied and my machine just doesn't like it.
I tried a 30 day trial version of Easy CD Creator 5. (what's the point? - it's so slimmed down it's crap). I took one look at the menu options and removed it from my PC.(It was a 3 minute trial)
Pinnacle Studio 7. _ well blind me with science, apparently I have to capture, edit, add sound effects, transitions and a sound track to get my video off a tape and onto DVD. I will have a go at this lot when I get a week off work.
I got Ulead software with my graphics card and I will give that a try.
I summary
Drive actually works.
Software is very basic (which is great)
Poor documentation with drive
Price is currently cheaper than 1st generation models at the same store.

Good unit. I have burned multiple +RW without any hitch. I copied one of the +RW to an Imation +R without any problem. Both +Rw and +R copies plays well with my Sony DVD player. I read that some owners had problems with +R. So far so good for me. I plan to use the +RW when authoring/convertion. When I want the final product for keeps, I'll re-copy it to the less expensive +R.

I have used Nero, NeoDVDPlus and DVDXCOPY on this unit.

It's worked great for me so far!!! I bought it to burn DVD transfers of my kid's video tapes. After writing 30+ DVDs, I've only had one problem, and I'm pretty sure it originated in my Studio 8 software. I agree with the other comments about the bundled software - find something else!

I got my drive for only $250 after a $50 mail-in rebate at Best Buy just a few weeks ago!

The best dvd+rw/+r writer in the world. If you don't got it get it.

Very nice hardware.
Recommended to stay away from the bundled software.......

Everything works well.
Easy installation.
No compatibility problems.
Make sure you upgrade the firmware via the Philips website.
Avoid the free software. Use your own, like PowerDVD, EasyCD creator and Nero.
I use DVD+RW by Philips and Imation (10 for £ 50 at PCWorld UK).

Comments posted by Hans from Other, November 16, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Unfortunatly I'm not that satisfied with that drive because my drive didn't manage to burn DVD+R discs correctly (6 out of 6 were faulty!). I tried three different brands but Nero allways reported that 2 or more vob files were inaccessable. PowerDVD reported reading problems playing all those discs even if I used the writer itself. I even tried an other buring problem but this didn't solve the problem. +RW discs were no problem.
Fortunatly I could sent the writer back to the shop. They had more people who had the same problem. They are so kind to replace the writer for the Sony DRU 500.

Comments posted by Roger from Other, October 30, 2002. Rated this writer 5 of 10.

I finally managed to purchase the drive (it seems to run out of stock quite often) and here's some comments

- the Hardware is really good :
easy to install
good looking
fast!
and (most important), trying +R,+RW with different stuff (ie: movies, backup, DV transfers) and media (branded and cheap ones) and I still have to get a coaster.
I really seems the tech issue was handled fine by Philips for once.

- The software is so,so.
Need to remove all others burner software
Nero burning is fine but I had come problems with InCD (not a big trouble for me anyway)
MyDVD is really bad stuff; so please do yourself a favor and use something else (Ulead DVD is my favourite)
Pinnacle studio is quite decent but outdated

ps: Media situation is getting better and better, here in Europe but DO check prices. I had a walk to the FNAC (french media store) and they sold DVD+RW at 14 € each! I could order them from www.dvd-and-media.com at less than half of that (and their services is very good by the way)

In conclusion, this is a very good drive which handle his job perfectly. Sure, the bundled software is not top notch and it doesn't do -R,-RW (which I don't like and need anyway); but what it does it does it well which is better than others current drives (check the sony dru media compatibility to see what I mean)
