| The NEC ND-3520A is an absolutely incredible burner. It's great! It can burn all formats including dual-layer dvds (now at 4x speed) which are still way too expensive to use. I use it for DVD-R. The drive can burn up to 16x on DVD-R. I use Verbatim 8x DVD-R (50 pack spindle purchased from Best Buy). I burn at 12X on this 8x media with this 16x burner and have not had a single bad disc. I'm burning 2-8 discs per day in my spare time and every one is coming out great. I bought it on newegg.com, with shipping for under $70. | I got a New Micro Advantage 16DDVDRW-13A for Christmas and it was junk!!! Returned it and got the NEC 3520A for $69.99 from zoomfly.com delivered. This thing burns and writes anything it eat them all like candy, ihave burnt about 50 DVD already and oly had it a couple weeks. It makes my Sony 510 look like a toy. Pioneer is coming out with a 109R in Europe which is a clone to the NEC 3520A and then going to offer it in the US later this year. Buy the best buy it now NEC 3520A. Highly recommended a good 10+. | I have a 100 pack of ridata r03 8x blanks from newegg.....they burn at 8x on my old imagic magicspin 8x dual driver BUT WOULD HAVE PROBLEMS ON PLAYBACK ON ALL PLAYERS! This NEC 3520A burns this media at 8x with no problems! Thanks to Liggy's And Dee's NEC ND-3520 Modified Firmware Beta 2 which automatically bitsets all dvd+r to dvd-rom! You guys rock! | Köpte en Nec 3520A för ett par veckor sedan och har bränt ca 10st +R skivor med den. Är enormt nöjd med Nec brännaren, har kollat igenom uppspelningen av flera skivor nogrannt på min Pioneer spelare och inte sett den minsta lilla störning,brännings- kvaliteten verkar vara superbra. Hade tidigare en Sony DRU 500 men den blev sliten och började bränna felande skivor som yttrade sig som tapp av både ljud och bild, och efter en stund tappade spelaren spåret och stoppade uppspelningen. Det jag hittills har sett vid bränning med Nec brännaren och uppspelningskontroll efteråt så inger den här brännaren ett mycket stort förtroende, en mycket bra brännare och dessutom ett bra pris, mellan 500 och 600 kr plus moms hos Dustin när jag köpte den. | This is Hi-End. Somebody introduced the verb "pimped", and it fits. I just invented "Pimped up by NEC"! I already had the NEC ND-3500A and it was good as gold too. 1.: Smoooooth drive, a real racer in ripping, starts reading even DVD+-Rsand +-RWs at 6x, accelerates steadily to the max data rate that my (and probably everybody's) poor external USB 2.0-Drive-Box can handle. (That's unfortunately just 11,5 MB/s and I've never seen any real USB 2.0 transmission rate higher than this)(well, lovely CAV:just letting the disc spin up to the max. mechanical limit ot 10000rpm and just keep it there ! No fumbling around like Z-CLV and other crooked ways to dodge patents) 2. And when it comes to writing: This drive runs fast and quiet (starts at 6x and will increase soon and steadily to 16x if your system can provide these 22 MB/s) and burns flawlessly, no contrast rings on the dye. (That means perfect beam power regulation of the laser unit). Readable on any standalone so far ! (checked on: old AIWA, cheap ORION, newer SONY, flashy LG.) Verbatim 2,4x DVD+R DL 8,5GB @ 4x (!): best writing results. Verbatim 4x/8x/16x DVD+R : best writing results. Verbatim 8x DVD-R : best writing results. Platinum (RICOH) 8x DVD+R : best writing results. Intenso (PRODISC) 4x DVD-R : bad results @4x speed, good results @ 2x speed, but every drive that has intelligent firmware will attempt only 2x speed on these rather poor "4x" blanks, which turn out to be not standalone-readable, when burned at 4x speed. TDK 4x DVD+RW : best writing results. PHILIPS 4x DVD+RW : best writing results. TDK 1x / 2x DVD-RW : best writing results. Until now I have been content with using an external USB 2.0/ Firewire400 drive enclosure. This was o.k with 8x burning speed, which translates to 11 MB/s. But in tests with this new drive it turned out that the NEC ND-3520A is simply faster than these connections allow. It was not the system being too slow. USB 2.0 provided just 11,5 MB/s (and never reached those lovely 60 MB/s (480 Mbit/s) that are laid out in USB-Stickers) ! Firewire 400 provided just 14 MB/s and that is still very much short of the 50 MB/s (400 Mbit/s) that it should be good for. Right now I'm going to build one lovely JAE 50-pin-to-ATA 40-pin adaptor and one ATA 44-to-ATA-40-pin adaptor to get that ATA bus out of my TOSHIBA-Satellite @ 33MB/s to let this kite finally fly free. | Just got it Newegg.com for $62. First experience with DVD buring and everything went great. No errors and drive was extremely silent. I got it for the fact that it will do DVD-R DL (when the firmware update comes out) but it is a great burner especially with the slightly increased RW speeds on some media over the 3500a. | Best DVD bruner out now and even better with the cheap price. Got mine from newegg for $65 shipped! Mine is black and manufactured in Dec 04. I mostly burn PS2 games and this drive is such a big improvement over my old NEC 1300. I still used the same cheap DVD-+Rs as before but with much better results. I used to think my cheapo Magic 3 chip in my PS2 was the cuase of my needing to reset the system several times before a DVDR will load. But now, all the games I've burned with this new drive fire up on the frist boot. Haven't done any DL burns yet. But cmon ppl, at this price, you can't go wrong with NEC. | This drive is extremely good; I recommend it highly. Utilizing DVD Decrypter, Nero Ultra 6.6; the firmware for this experiment was 2.17 (newer version is available), and the media was Verbatim 2.4X (which burned at 4X!) The Sony player (DVP-NC655P) I'm currently using will not play +R DL disks, according to Sony's support people. Not so. Here's a tip: It will, with a little work on your part. This relates to the movie "Braveheart". Many of the menu functions on the disk are disabled (it will actually turn the player off!) or just goofy because of read errors - but don't give up! Start the disk playing and wait for it to finish the legal bologna and display the main menu from the movie disk. Select the first chapter from the scene menu, and then go to the menu on the player and select the audio stream (5.1, DTS, etc.) you desire, and it will pull it up. Now it plays normally. It will continue to play beautifully, and even revert to the selections you've made with the resume feature if you stop part way through. Now I don't have to buy a newer player to see DL movies I'll be burning for my backup collection. I'm viewing on a Samsung 50 inch DLP (component cables) and the picture is superb. | I received my Nec ND-3520A with 1.04 firmware yesterday. Manufactured in December 04. I paid about USD$75 here in Norway. White front (but comes in black and silver also). Excellent drive from start to finish! And for its cheap price it is tremendous value for money! I tested it with several 4x and 8x DVD-R media (Verbatim, Datawrite, Commodore, Ritek, PCLine, Princo), and all discs tested with very low PI and PO error rates (average PI/PO in 1 digit range) when checking on a Pioneer DVR-108 and latest version of DVDInfoPro. One thing I love about this drive is the blazing fast read speeds on DVD-R and DVD+R, which is approx. 7x-16x. Only a few drives reach 16x on recordable media, but this drive does it with ease. All beforementioned media I used for recording, had a perfect reading graph from start to finish, when testing reading speed in Nero CD-DVD Speed. I have several DVD writers, including a NEC ND-3500A, and the NEC-ND3520A is not that much different than its predecessor. The 3520A have about the same burning results, when verifying the burned disc, that I have experienced with the 3500A. But the 3520A has faster RW speeds, as well as support for upcoming DVD-R DL with its new chipset (although this will require firmware updates). Because this is a feature of the new chipset, the 3500A will not be able to have the same support. As the 3500A, the 3520A is quite noisy when spinning at almost 10.000 RPM, but not any noisier than other drives. I do not know why some people complain on this, I have never heard a drive spinning discs at this speed without making noise. Any tool like Nero DriveSpeed will keep the speed under control if you do not require maximum data transfer rates (like if playing DVD-video).
