After 7 months of use with no trouble and no coasters, suddenly I have coaster-city. Even trying to play an original DVD the image is digitized. All I can say is thank goodness for the 1-yr warranty, and hopefully I can get at least another 5 months' use out of the warranty replacement.
BTW...mine is the 640c (BenQ) product.

OS: WinXP w/service pack 2
Software: 1clickdvdcopy by LGinnovations.
Media: Ritek Ridata (G-05) 8x DVD-R

I'm very happy with this drive. I burn my DVDs at full speed and they play fine in my Philips DVD 724 stand-alone. I get mostly 16x burns with Prodisc DVD+R 16x although ocassionally a disc wants to burn at 12x(the additional burning time is only about 30 seconds.) I haven't tried Ritek DVD+R 16x as yet but Ritek DVD-R burn fine at 8x. I'm curious to know what the top write speed is for the Ritek DVD+R 16x in this drive though. :)

About the only bad burns I can remember are video title sets that weren't authored correctly. This drive is definitely the best feature of my HP Pavilion PC!

kicks ass. 640b is made by LG, 640c is made by BenQ.

Standard burner in the new A1130N from HP.

There are at least two revisions of the HP dvd640i. Revision b is made by LG, while revision c is made by BenQ. I have the 640c (BenQ) and have been happy with it so far, whether writing CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and of course using LightScribe to label.

will not write Ridata DVD+R 16 speed. I bought a new computer and had DVD from the other hp computer that had a 630i dvd -+ rewrite drive and worked good in that drive

nice burner to have becuase it can do bitsettingwithout applying hacked firmware. Plus its one of the only Lightscribe drives on the market. Would have given it a 10 but 1 the bezel isnt black enough to match my case and 2 it doesnt overspeed any of the dvd+rs I have tried. Overall a good burner for someone who doesnt want to tinker around with firmwares and such.
