I don't have a PS3 and have no intention of ever buying one,but I am curious why there are so many posts about playback problems on video and BlueRay. What's so different about it's firmware?

I haven't had any real issues. Like any hardware based player it has to place some limitations of what it will support, and it improves these with each firmware release. There are some things it won't play natively, but the range of formats it does play is impressive, and the with a media server that can transcode, it can play pretty much any format over the network. It has certainly played every BluRay I have tried (not many, granted at this stage) without any problems.

  3. It's not an open, general purpose computing platform with thousands of programmers around the world writing player software, audio decoders, and video decoders.

I also have a PS3 and have had a good experience with it. I haven't had problems with any Blu-ray titles. There have been firmware upgrades over the past year that increased the number of video formats that it will play. I also have it attached to a PC via a network and use it to stream XVID movies. I'm using Tversity as the server software. Look for the prominent opinion. You will always find some who will knock any product.

Yeah, I have to agree the PS3 is a pretty cool multimedia player..... I also use Tversity or PS3 media server... Play BR or stream mp4 flicks (wireless) ,or my music folders with flacs,mp3, m4a playback..It just rocks man!....Don't knock it till you try it...

Out of curiosity, are either of you using wireless for streaming, and if so, have you configured QoS in your router ?

Over the last three years I have (and still have) a couple of media players. The PS3 is the standard for Blu-Ray players and is a pretty darn good media player. I have my DVD Collection, MP4 files, and my BD and HD-DVD library on it. Other than having to re-encode the VC-1 (or the EAC3 audio to 2-ch) it has played everything that I have.

Additionally, it plays my new Canon HD-FH100 Flash Hi-Def Camcorder files directly. When they get the FW to stream the VC-1 encoded video it will be the perfect media player.

The fact that I can play Call of Duty 4 is just a bonus.

My PS3 receives media files over wirless, Tversity is great software, it plays just fine, however for online racing games like GTA4 I always have it hooked up over ethernet.

never played a blue ray disc in it, unlikely I ever will. I am happy with a 700Mb axxo movie!

I gave up on TVersity and use PS3 Media Server exclusively now. It is far more flexible with it's ability to transcode easily and automatically handle subtitles.

There is simply no comparison between the low quality crap that goes under the AXXO banner, and real video

The only complaint I have about the PS3 has nothing to do with the video but the audio. I wish that it could output audio over the HDMI cable and the optical toslink cable simutaneously, like my HD-DVD players does.
