Time to renew, I have a Sharp Mini DV cam with firewire out and it has worked fine for many years however, time to update, since re installing XP on my PC no way will XP pick up the cam, on another note I now want to transfer my vids to digital for transfering to Divx.

After doing more research for analog to dv converters, i have decided that the best way is to have a camera that has pass through functions. Now, which of these cameras is best for passing through? Any opinions greatly appreciated.
    thanks

My opinion would be to look for the best cam that fits within you budget with the pass thru... I'd be looking at how well the cam itself performs, I don't think your going to find much difference in how well different models perform as a DV converter.

    Try this site http://www.camcorderinfo.com/

If the old one is really for the bin, I'll pay you shipping to take it off your hands and avoid the landfill (within reason). 8)

    Chers guys

hehe, if only, afraid this one is being purchased by a mate, unless we start a bidding war..

    thecoalman...

I will check out this site, personally I have been looking at Sony models, but not sure if anyone has any experience with a particular model. Not bothered about cost (within reason) so long as it will do the job ok.

Still annoys me though that my Sharp one will not work with this ver of XP, it was fine under XP home, and with premier pro 7.

Different computer? There's sometimes issues with SP2 and some cams that are fixable.

  7. You can try using DVIO or DVapp to capture and then import into premier the DV avi file.

Bootifull, not tried it yet but that could be the problem, the ver of XP i installed already has SP2 by default, possibly thats the problem.

Well, if anyone has the same problem as me then this is the answer, As Moviegeek said the swine is SP2, unfortunately SP2 is by default installed with the version of XP i have.

More detail on the issue of problems with older DV cams came on this thread

    http://forum.digital-digest.com/archive/topic/42557-1.html

Now, bet this is the answer to all who have had problems with older cams, I cannot confirm that it has helped me yet because I need to obtain the SP1 sys files but by all accounts it is SP2 that needs a kick up the arse.

Thanks guys and passthis thread on to others who might be experiencing the same problem.

    RESULT!!!

The proceedure works...Old Sharp DV Cam is now up and running. Those damm twits at Microsoft screwed up again.

For reference the proceedure can be slightly different from given though. If you are running the latest vestion of XP like I have there is no c:\windows\driver cache\1386 folder to copy the files into.

Briefly, I ran the PC in safe mode (administrator) then copied the SP1 files into my C\windows\system32\drivers directory, then renamed the SP2.cab folder to SP2old.cab so it would not keep replacing the old drivers with new ones.

Secondly, you also have to copy over the SP1 files msdv.sys & stream.sys to the same folder therefore six files in total.

As I said, depending on your XP version there is no need to also copy these file to the C\windows\system32\dll cache folder.

Make sure thought that the SP2.cab folder is renamed because nasty old Bill Gates has brought in a self healing funcion to these files, you will just find that it keeps updating the sys files back to the dodgy ones.

    BIG HELP GUYS

Many thanks, especially THECOALMAN for supplying me with the files...
