XviD codec is mpeg-4 video codec. Xvid is an open-source research project focusing on video compression and is a collaborative development effort. All code is released under the terms of the GNU GPL license. The Xvid video codec implements MPEG-4 Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile standards. It permits compressing and decompressing digital video in order to reduce the required bandwidth of video data for transmission over computer networks or efficient storage on CDs or DVDs. Due to its unrivalled quality Xvid has gained great popularity and is used in many other GPLed applications, like e.g. Transcode, MEncoder, MPlayer, Xine and many more.

Using a custom Matrix like Fox will most likely choke up your DVD player and never play. Via an Android box or suchlike media player no problems I think. I'd go for Q2 for total quality though, but would be a bigger file compared to h264 encodings. There is also a modded Jawor Xvid 1.4 over at codecs.com which is excellent too.

Xvid for me still gives an authentic look to films and never looks as waxy smoothed out as some h264 encoding I'd done. H265 is even worse for this! Xvid handles film grain and details much better. Lots of films are ruined on blu-ray by destroying the color palette and removing too much grain. Xviud cannot compete for the newer AVC/HEVC codecs' compression abilities but can certainly hold its own for quality!

Excellent codec. Very fast. Use the "Fox Home Entertainment" custom matrix and CQ=3 and you won't need to worry about the quality. The only way to achieve comparable quality with x264 is to encode in 10-bit, which makes the size a lot smaller but Smart TV's with weak CPU's choke on the latter.

Getting old now, but reliable. bitrates of 1500kbps give good results on a clean source. You can get away with much less if your source is pristine, but the artifacts and macroblocks are horrible when blown up on a HD TV if the codec is not set up correctly. So throw bit rate at it and you will like the end result.

Good old

Becoming a bit dated as a codec, but still hanging on. You can get good results on a clean source using 1000kbps or more. Lower bit rates just show artifacts and flaws. I use this codec rarely, but it is pleasing to set up and relatively easy to use.
