This is a very nice release and most welcome as it fixes an error I encountered in the previous build. No bugs so far. Thanks.

Review by Wilson B on Oct 31, 2023 Version: 3.5.8.6 OS: Windows 10 64-bit Ease of use: 10/10 Functionality: 10/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 10/10

I needed a video converter capable of batch operation as I had nearly a thousand files of various formats I wanted in Xvid AVI; some of the files were in AVI but had broken index files. Not only did this software perform the needed batch conversion but did so very easily and without issue! Now all my video files are in the same format while keeping the previous video and audio quality at comparable file size.

I've tried many other pieces of software that were either very simple to use but had poor batch function, or vice-versa, and this one accomplished both very well. :)

As it develops bug or reversions can be introduced. Best get a version which works with you and stick with it for however long. I prefer to use Avidemux for its wider choice of filters and use the last winpenpack portable which is really stable, but do use XMedia sometimes. Both are good tools.

It may as others have said take a few versions to get stable, but that is relative. Generally each release is stable and not a beta. Unfortunately an exception bug from tweaks to ffmeg builds might trigger operational errors.

This new version crashes frequently on my system with my desired h.264 cuda settings. The previous version 3.5.7.5 was much more stable, I wonder if new bugs have been introduced. I used this software for some years now and find that there are frequently some versions that are quite unstable and I have to revert to a previous version, somtimes it takes several new versions to beome stable again.

@tj157

Yep, file xvidcore.dll in the x64 zip file is corrupt. A workaround is to use an old copy of this file from a previous version, as it hasn't changed since 2019. Hopefully the author will fix this soon.

No system language detection.
The "add to the queue" step is always confusing for a file to convert.
Otherwise, the software works fine.

Hi Fellas, I dont use this program much anymore but your problem with it tweeked my interest I found that the vcruntime140_1.dll is missing and must be placed in the install folder. After that the errors were gone and Xmedia Recode 3.5.7.3 loaded and worked perfectly..I got the newest missing dll from here..https://www.dll-files.com/vcruntime140_1.dll.html I did not try it in any of my win 10 computers yet..

I have been using XMedia Recode on Win10 64bit for several years with few issues. I just installed 3.5.7.3 and now it will not recode. I tried 32bit, 64bit and portable. All have the same issue. I found a block in Comodo firewall and released it and program seemed to work then broke again. Anyone else seeing this?

@Brazil2

Might be something to what you said.... Turns out, easiest way to fix problem in Linux was to leapfrog to latest and greatest version Wine 8. Downloaded v8 directly from the repositories at winehq.org and Xmedia Recode 3.5.7.1 now starts and runs fine. Disaster avoided once again. I'm a happy camper.

Been using Windows XMedia Recode (portable x64) on Linux (under Wine emulator) for years successfully, until now. Appears that v3.5.7.1 fails to start in Linux under Wine. Last version to successfully start and run was 3.5.6.7. Tried it on Wine versions 4, 5, & 6, but 3.5.7.1 fails. Comparing the portable files, appears that latest version has different file structure so may be reason it fails to start on Linux (Wine). Will do more testing, but doesn't look good for Linux fans.

Review by Piero on Nov 21, 2022 Version: 3.5.6.7 OS: Windows 7 Ease of use: 1/10 Functionality: 1/10 Value for money: 1/10 Overall: 1/10

I've been using XMedia Recode to back up tons of old video material which is interlaced. I wanted to retain the interlacing as I prefer to let the playback device do the de-interlacing, and this software makes it a breeze to do so.

Additionally, I had other material where I only wanted to convert the audio, due to PCM on a mono video soundtrack from the 80's being overkill to say the least, so the option to copy/passthrough the video track was an added bonus.

The only things holding me back from giving XMedia Recode a top rating are as follows:

a) The GPU accelerated encoding isn't the fastest out there.

b) It doesn't always accurately read the contents of a DVD or BD folder.

c) The inability to passthrough a PGS subtitle track is a pain, meaning any BD encodes need a run through MKV ToolNix to add the subs back in from the original master file.

That said, overall I have found this a brilliant tool for a big, big job, with a very user friendly interface and learning curve. If the points above were addressed in a future update, it would be a solid 10 from me. I will be happily using XMedia Recode for quite a few of my encoding jobs going forwards.

I like this software, but I have a question: are those plethora of device profiles really needed as many are not really needed anymore. Isn't Blackberry a bit too dated now? If a GUI ever needed revamping and a few things changing then this is the time.

Review by Mags on Aug 29, 2022 Version: 3.5.6.5 OS: Windows 10 64-bit Ease of use: 8/10 Functionality: 9/10 Value for money: 10/10 Overall: 8/10

The problem is not the software perse but the changes in the build of ffmeg which your pc system might have problems with or conflicts with existing software within your pc environment as in shared dll's or libraries. That is why it might be better to run it as a portable, if you see a lot of crashes. Avidemux for example is very stable run as a portable, but installed can see a lot of crashes. No computer is exempt from errors or runs smoothly. Older builds of ffmeg are very stable. Use Super simple Video Converter 2015 portable or Pazers MP4 Video Converter and you will see zero crashes. Great alternatives if you see problems with XMedia or AviDemux.

I like XMedia Recode because it is one of the few software that works with external codecs that are extremely frequent as codec updates, in addition to offering a multitude of formats. However, it is a program for advanced users, who are already used to more advanced compression configurations, so anyone who is an atypical user may feel confused when configuring an output format. Another point that bothers me is the "mysterious" crashes, which it has, depending on the output format to choose, the program simply closes without further explanation. Another point of improvement would be the use of filters, especially the part of changing resolutions, man!, it's a painful thing, upscale a video, for example, no matter how much you insert the resolution filter , and change the resolution values (for example I want to change a resolution from 720x540 to 960x720 being the movie, in 4:3 scale), the program just doesn't do it! Even avidemux, with its non-intuitive interface, directs you in an easier way, to change the resolution, and to insert the filters. As a user, I suggest developers to review the program's interface, I believe that, due to the range of possibilities, it is possible to integrate a program, with a slightly more friendly interface. But in the same way, I thank the developers, for the constant updates, and for the development of the project.

It's still regular in development, not perfect but it's freeware. Maybe a complete revamp of its obscure profiles would be in order(i.e delete them!) and simplify it's GUI or should I say make navigation easier and have it being able to ivtc a dvd source units options like Handbrake's very useful auto detelecine/auto decomb settings. Xmedia can't do this. Many thanks.

All this time in development and still has no helpfiles or guides on its homepage as to software functions, advanced options etc. Also getting a email reply from its creator, well you've more chance of winning the lottery!

The device profiles it uses are largely redundant-a generic one will work on tv or mobile whatever make it is unless your device is ancient, so why support something that is an antique, eg Blackberry etc? XMedia development has become stifled and aviDemux surprisingly better. Value for money- please! It's freeware but better out there.

Have been using XMR for many years ... yes it has its fair share of problems and like others have said the developer never replies or even acknowledges emails sent to him, but this latest version crashes almost immediately (about 1 sec) after starting a encode with:

Exception code: 0xc0000409
which means: STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN.

so I have to give this version a Overall score of 1. Otherwise I would give it a score of 9.

Returned to a older version which works OK.

OMG! First time I see such incompetent developers really from otherwise good software! It's been so many months close to a freaking YEAR since we have reported many times an issue (from different people, different emails and even places, with screenshots and step-by-step guide how to reproduce it!) where option to change resolution is not working and still nothing was fixed despite few new releases and judging by their notes 'bug fixes'. INCREDIBLE. Hello! Option to resize files in batch is not working, no matter the settings! Even if you put 640 pixels to one side max to a 4k film the other part still stays at 2160 i.e. 640x2160! Is it THAT HARD to fix for MONTHS??? A YEAR??? CHRIST!!!

It seems the biggest moan which rattles many is the developer's lack of email replies. Why give one when you never reply? I agree. It's not as if hundreds are spamming him and he is inundated with it! Great that this software continues in development.

However if bugs are reported by many they should be fixed in time, but if the developer does not have access to all platform hardware scenarios or replicate them then it will be impossible to fix these bugs. And lets not be judgmentental this all takes time and money and people have lives and jobs to do each day. This software is free you know, and revenue relies on support or donations! My advice use an older version which worked in your system before bug was introduced or use AviDemux which of late has become quite stable and ease of on the moaning folks.

It doesn't matter if he reads the reviews or not when bugs that were reported months if not years ago still not fixed!
If he cannot reproduce it then he always can contact back via e-mail! FIVE different machines had this issue on different hardware, OS and settings how the hell it's not possible to reproduce when basically EVERYONE I asked had this issue?! Try and see for yourself!

I'll second that(review below)! Most of these converters based on ffmeg have deinterlace option but are quite useless in terms of none works that well, because it ruins a source video in terms off quality. Think back to older tools avi days of AutoGK, AviNET. AutoGK could handle hybrid sources, ivtc Pure FILM etc quite well, but it could leave a few scenes with jagged edges, or in an interlaced source+ hybrid you might repeat scenes messing up more, so advanced users would use Gordian Knot to manipulate scripts and get a better outcome. Avi.NET would only have deinterlace option using decomb and was very crap at any source other than progressive!

Now for a long time Handbrake has used telecine and decomb. Keep these at default together and you would never have any of the problems mentioned. Forget deinterlace even though Handbrake offers it. Even programs like Wondershare, Wonderfox and the plethora of these crappy video converters only have a deinterlace option. Even freeware based on Ffmeg only offer a deinterlace option. Again Useless! The modern advice is keep deinterlace intact if at all possible and let your player do the rest. Why XMediaRecode still cannot ivtc is a big minus point? And those advanced options still warrant a guide.

This is a great tool as long as you don't need any specialized filters. It would be better if in addition to deinterlace it had TIVTC as well.

Writing reviews in CAPITAL LETTERS is akin to shouting. You said you reported it and still frustrated. Maybe developer did read your mails? In any case he never responds, but I'm sure he listens. Email again and extrapolate a log file or detail step by step the issue as it unfolds. Possibly an isolated issue. Good luck!

Would benefit from a user helpfile. Developer never answers e-mail queries or bug reports, but probably helps him to fix minor bugs from these e mail reports. In any case changelog never says much about what bugs were fixed!

The profiles for specific mobiles/devices etc are not necessary and clutter up the input options as well as confuse. Surely a generic would do all these days? The advanced options need auto settings as it is too easy for the novice to misunderstand and mess up say deinterlace settings

Still in development, software is portable and has a small footprint. It is stable. Thanks.

Been using for many years as it's by far the best encoder for quick, simple batch jobs, but still offers more complex options when needed. The ONLY gripe is that if any file is loaded as part of a batch and it has any errors, the whole batch is lost and the program simply shuts down. This is REALLY annoying, especially as usually I find competing encoders will process the offending file without a hitch! It seems mainly to be AVI files that cause this issue. It would be very nice if some capability of saving the batch was possible, so that it could simply be restarted with the batch list and the offending file removed, rather than having to recompile the full batch list.

I have try hundreds of other same programs, but my opinion this is the best and easy to use. :)
From earlier version 3.5.2.0 to the prezent 3.5.2.7, when I try just to convert audio track from a movie .mkv extension and i give just copy video track , after encode I receive a file in .3gp extension no .mkv
For that I use just version 3.5.1.7

Humility is probably not judging people as easily as you do, but instead opening your mind to see it as a hand extended to other options.

If you love XMedia Recode it's your choice, but in this case accept that others do not feel the same way!

The program very correctly extracts audio streams from avi containers, saving all the metadata of the file. If the out of sync has been fixed, it will be carefully moved to the new file.
A decent free program that you can trust.

Software WAS good but for a good 12 months it's introduced major bugs with NVENC to the point that the maximum Video Rate is 64, YES 64 bits!!!

Emailed the support email multiple times. No fix or reply.

As someone else said find a version that works and sick with it. It's great software and the best I've found for working with subs. A pity there's constant updates that just ignore bug.

Use version 3.4.3.6

This is one of my favorite powerful Video and Audio-Converter with features, which some of the commercial programs did not have or with much limitation. You can use it for DVD/Bluray or movie file conversion, Audio CD ripping, Audio file conversion (MP3, AAC, M4A, WAV, OGG, etc.). XMediaRecode was one of the first which use Intel QuickSync or Nvidia Cuda hardware acceleration for video conversion and may things are easy to use. If you want high quality you need to test it with different settings, but other programs are not better! The program design is not very modern, but the program is fast! That is more important for me than a new design or useless aninations during conversion. The program works perfect and if it does not do something, you will use the wrong settings. Xmedia Recode is a good piece of software. Thanks!

Sebastian the creator has never ever responded to an email yet from those I know over the years and emails I'd sent reporting bugs. He does fix them I think, but by doing so it may break up the code and introduce another bug. I prefer avidemux, but this is just as good and usually more stable. Just lacks a clear help guide for using the harder options like deinterlace etc. Would benefit from having an auto default setting like Handbrake does using Decomb.

For everyone getting an error about VCRUNTIME140.dll being missing when trying to launch, quickest/simplest solution is to put that file in the root of your XMedia Recode folder. You may already have the file elsewhere - try searching your C drive for it. Once you find it, either on your PC or elsewhere, put a copy in your XMedia Recode folder. Note: it can't be a shortcut to the file, it must be an actual copy of the file.

The other tip I'd give is to anyone with a recent nVidia GPU. Be sure to change the video codec to the "(Nvidia NVENC)" version of AVC/H.264 or HEVC/H.265 if you want to save a ***LOT*** of encoding time. The GPU can process the encoding MUCH faster than the CPU.

I am an xmedia user from this version 2.0 onwards, and I remember that at first it annoyed me with the amount of bugs and crashes it had (including the portable version), but after version 3.2 onwards (a period which the program was almost 1 year without updates), it has taken a huge leap in quality, not to mention that in terms of updates, it is one of the (or only) programs that almost weekly (may seem overkill to me but isn't), it has updates, and that's great for us users! However, one of the things that still persists in errors and crashes (I can't say if it's because of the codec's impossibility), is how much you try to convert 6-channel audio to an acc format using the he conversion method. -aac v2, no matter how many kbps you choose (it simply crashes the program and doesn't convert it, same problem I had with XviD4PSP), ie if it can't convert this way, because then the software makes this available conversion option, how many channels to choose? But regardless, it is a program that has a wide range of audio and video conversions, and even lets you rip dvd's and bluray, make edits and minor image enhancements, and of course work with subtitles of various types , a program that is grateful to us users as it is constantly updated, and remains free until then, thanks to the developers! PS: If possible, provide the translation of the interface in Brazilian Portuguese, it would be great!

One of the great which has been around for years and much better than aviDemux. My only quibble is no actual help files/guide with it as in showing you how to use the advanced filters eg. denoise settings or which deinterlace to use/set best. The developer never answers even if reporting a bug, but he must listen as he does update it, but updating often introduces a new bug which is the downside, despite fixing a previous one.

I may have found an undocumented feature of XMedia Recode. According to the developers web site, "XMedia Recode can only convert unprotected DVDs". While this is true, If you copy the libdvdcss-2.dll file [v1.4.2] (also downloadable from videohelp) to the folder where XMedia Recode is installed, then it will be able to see the video files on a DVD (kinda like how Handbrake and Vidcoder do already). Hi & wishing you all a very cheerful new year to all rippers, editors, muxers, compilers, developers etc...!

First off this was my one of favorite software but the last stable version is 3.4.3.6, from there on the development of this one of a kind software is loosing its capability to impress the users bcoz of various bugs which are already stated & revived by Hardy.
I agree to every issues he has addressed, but since then I am using updated Handbrake to conversion & slight edit of resolution as per my needs.
but I still work with 3.4.3.6 when it comes colors, interlace, clip speed etc.

I have both 3.4.3.6 & the 64 bit updated variant of Xmedia Recode, Seriously I don't know what has gone wrong but there are just too many bugs.
I did write to him many years ago but he never responds, I also mailed him about the converted dts files being a 16bit rather 24 bit & also about bit-rate being defaulted at minimum 896 rather 756 for 5.1 dts files. I would love to see further developments over 7.1ch dts audio files conversion as output rather just limited to aac 7.1ch.

Some how I feel he is working on something that could yield the fruit someday, I am very happy he brought in 64 bit versions.
My advice: if you have perfect video files which just need to be compressed for your usb drive or dvds, you can use the latest builds but if you need to edit stuff for colors, resolution etc always go back to 3.4.3.6 without a doubt.

Developer please don't update/post your software till you come up with whatever you want to achieve with bcoz it will make users more frustrated & negative ratings will be unavoidable.

Nevertheless we all appreciate your best efforts & only wish to more stable versions. So my rating is for the last stable version 3.4.3.6.

Unfortunately, version 3.4.4.9 x64 has quite some important bugs:
1. I installed it on a clean windows 10 Pro x64. Installing without problems but starting is impossible. You get the message "msvcr100.dll missing". This file is in clean Windows 10 present in "syswow64" but not in "system32". Although XMedia is looking for the file in "system32". You can start XMedia if you put a 32bit version of "msvcr100.dll" in "system32". In my opinion a 64bit Software should use the file in "syswow64".
2. Till version 3.4.3.6 you could cut and crop as you want. Then you hit the button to use the original resolution and the new file had the original resolution (for example 720x576). Now you cut and crop, you hit the button, it will show you "720x576" but the new file is in a completely different resolution as the result of cut and crop (for example 788 x 524). I tried it again and again with different workflows, the result is the same. You cannot produce a file with "regular" Resolution if you use cut or crop.
3. Till version 3.4.3.6 you could add additional filters to filter list. XMedia saved the new filters, they were present at every start of the software. Now you add filters but they are NOT present at the next start. In 90% of many many tests with different workflows XMedia uses the additional filters only for the actually opened file. The filters are even gone if you just open a new file.
4. There's also a general problem with saving settings in the filters. Examples:
a) You open a file and you activate "interlace". Till Version 3.4.3.6 this activation was saved for all new files. But now: You open a new file, you want to use "interlace". "Interlace" is activated but grey and without function. You have to click "activate" again.
b) You change settings in different filters you produce the new file. Then you check the file but you want to change some settings. Till version 3.4.3.6 all changes in the filters were present. Now you have to check every setting through all filters. Maybe they are present maybe not; often XMedia forgot some of them. Especially settings in cut or crop are gone you have to set them again.

I'm user of this software for many years, I'm also a power user of this software. So, I'm very disappointed that these bugs are still present since all versions after 3.4.3.6

At last ... an updated version that works and 64bit as well !!!

Finally had a chance to install v3.4.4.9 64bit and it works AOK. On my Win8.1 64bit system I didn't have to copy NTDLL.dll as mentioned by Gh0st.

Not sure if v3.4.4.9 64bit requires VisualC++ runtime libraries as they were already installed from earlier attempts.

See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads
for a list of available downloads.

One bug that has been around for a while is rendering subtitles in the output video file. I have several HDTV (1080i) TV recordings which contain several different subtitle tracks. I want to render 1 of the subtitle tracks in the output video (and dump the others). However, neither v3.4.4.9 nor v3.4.3.0 will do so directly from the source video.

For a work-around though, extract the applicable subtitle track from the source video as a xxxxx.srt. On the Subtitle tab: select Import, choose the extracted srt file and render for Mode and XMR now renders the subtitle track.

PS. XMR will copy 1 or more subtitle tracks to the output video just fine.

A very nice tool even if profiles are a pain to manage.

I had to copy ntdll.dll to C:\Program Files\XMedia Recode 64bit folder to solve a crash at start.

I was using 32 bits version so far.

Problem solved here ;)

I was under the impression every release was a beta of sorts, because each new version has bug fixes for the previous one. That said much more stable than that buggy program called aviDemux. The maker of xmedia recode never responds to mails, but if he reads them he must be fixing the bugs hopefully. This beta is riddled with them.

I tried the new 64bit version but no luck at all with that.

Firstly, I received an error msg that VCRUNTIME140.dll is missing from your computer during the install. So I installed both the 32bit & 64bit Visual C++ runtimes and re-installed. That got rid of the msg but the 64bit version of Xmedia Recode wouldn't even start.

Oh well, back to v3.4.3.0 32bit.

I've been using Xmedia Recode for MANY years and it's great, but ...

For me the last working version is 3.4.3.0, *every* single version since then cancels with:

"An error occurred when converting. Total processing time: 00:01"

The problem has something to do with the H.264 decoders, I normally use the default: "MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 (DXVA)". If I change the decoder to "MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 (Intel Quick Sync)" the pgm runs but the resulting video has pink & purple lines across the top of the video.

Everything runs just fine in v3.4.3.0 no matter what H.264 decoder I use.

I've sent Sebastian Dörfler several emails but never got a response.

If someone knows a possible fix for this problem please post here. TIA.

Despite my comments above I'm still giving Xmedia Recode 10 out 10.

Roughly put: Xmedia Recode is your 'Handbrake+' solution. The UI is very similar to the very popular Handbrake video recoding tool, but unlike Handbrake, Xmedia Recode also has a very useful video passthrough (aka. video remuxing or rewrapping) option.
Some other nice bonus features compared to Handbrake are:
- Simple chapter editing
- Simple file header metadata editing
- Simple visual timeline editor for trimming/cutting out parts
- Extensive output format support

Xmedia Recode is a Windows-only application. Other OS users, who are afraid of FFmpeg's command line interface, can use an equally powerful free GUI tool like Hybrid (www.selur.de), if they wish to remux video or use other features that Handbrake doesn't offer, but Xmedia's UI is fairly user friendly, while some of the free alternatives aren't.

Xmedia Recode is updated very frequently to always support the latest ffmpeg improvements. It has managed to stay relevant for as long as I have been using it (since 2011), and its stability has improved greatly over the years... And most importantly: It is completely adware/malware-free. Hats off to Sebastian Dörfler for his long-time effort.

Great that it is free and all, but would benefit from some kind of explanation for the advanced options. Avidemux is much easier to use and has more support, but in reality if you know what you are doing then you can't go wrong with either of these programs. Tons of options, which may be confusing or overwhelming if you don't know what they do. There are presets that help but the layout may still a bit confusing at first for some (perhaps a "simple interface" section would help, with the "advanced interface" being how it looks now)? Great customization though, settings for everything from bitrate and deblocking to cropping and adding noise to hide macroblocking, or deblocking/smoothing filters if you want to go about it that way. Color correction and automatic aspect ratio correction when needed, even. It output files that worked with my PSP and I will use it for the XBOX someday, too. Once you get used to the interface, it's amazing, in my opinion - all for free... wow (Developer, include a Donation link somewhere; I personally don't have much money but I'd be happy to send a little for such a great program that you keep updating!)

About crashes, recommend removing all freeware video converters, and then reinstalling XMedia Recode 3.3.7.2. Also restarting windows. That fixed the crash for me, anyway. I had freemake and vidcoder installed at the time, and did not restart windows the first time I tried to encode a file using the XMedia Recode, and I did get a crash. But for now, what I have tested seems to work fine.
I have tested converting a dvd .vob to .mp4 file. I have used both mpeg-4 avc/h.264, and the mpeg-4 avc/h.264(nvida nvenc). With rate control mode set at constant quality, quality set at the default 20. I encoded the same movie with both encoders, and watching the moves could not tell any difference in quality. I did see that the mpeg-4 avc/h.264(nvida nvenc) .mp4 file was 100MB larger than the mpeg-4 avc/h.264 .mp4 file. Encoding was much faster with the mpeg-4 avc/h.264(nvida nvenc) on my (GeForce gtx 1060 6GB).
For now this is the freeware video encoder for me, I just need to find out what all these settings do. LOL

Firstly this site should get rid of the "new version" tag with advertised software as this program has not been updated in over a year. I see the same format for old stuff too which has ceased years ago. Change it to latest version if still in development or last version if not and get rid of the value for money score on freeware!

XmediaRecode great program, but it has ceased in development I'm told from good sources!

Yeah, great software, but would love some sort of help file to explain the advanced filters etc. I many times was thinking of genuinely donating to its development, but thought why bother when the developer never bothers to reply to his users' mails, yet gives a contact email address on his site. His loss!

Yes, where is that elusive creator of this nice software Sebastion? I emailed him many times over the years to report bugs or praise but never once had a reply. Many others reported the same. His software might have benefited being on a forum like doom 9 to feedback as he was apparently too lazy or busy to answer.

I like this 10X better than Handbrake. Best encoder I've used so far. It does 10bit x265 encodes. The 12bit x265 encode I tried turned out corrupt, but it could be user error. I've used it for turning .WAV to AAC in .m4a container too. I like it a lot so far. Thank you very much.

Definitely the best all-in-one video converter software! It allows you to to almost everything.
I am very grateful to the author for this wonderful software!
Unfortunately, after almost 10 years of permanent developing, the author - Sebastian Dörfler - seems that has ceased the development. I hope this is only something temporary, otherwise this will be a big loss for all.

Fabulous and ultra complete software.
I have tested several of them, and really this one is by far the most powerful and the best at all levels.
It is quite easy to use, and above all you can manually customize / modify ALL the encoding parameters and then save your own settings for future use.

It also allows you to encode subtitles, it does support all subtitle formats like .ass, which is a wonderful feature because in .ass format you can completely format/edit your subtitle files and at the final encoding this formatting is saved/kept, so it makes 'beautiful' output files :))
And if you just want to encode simple .srt subtitles, it also offers the possibility of a simple but ample formatting.

It handles very well the .mkv and allows to encode several audio or subtitles tracks.

And for beginners, it offers a large number of 'presets' of encoding modes.

I recommend 1000%!

Does its job well, most of the time with a few bugs now and then and it is freeware so one shouldnt complain, but the author never replies to email/bug reports ever and there is no help guide even after all these years to explain its more advanced features like settings for yadif or the denoiser. Not even defaults are clearly stated there, all you see are meaningless numbers! This makes it so easy for a novice to destroy his encoding.

I just tried using 3.2.8.0 and I am getting this Error "The Procedure entry point SetThreadErrorMode could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". XMedia Recode 3.2.7.1 works just fine for me.

Q1: Does this mean 3.2.8.0 will not work with Vista neither?

Also, there is a problem with MKV files generated by XMedia Recode, all versions. When I try to play it on my Stand-alone TV Media Player (Netgear EVA9100) when I try to forward the video ... it kicks back to the beginning of the movie. Thanks!:)

I almost feel bad to give Sebastian anything less than 10. But for a program that gets UPDATED So Often and still have bugs, or introduce a new one ... for life of me I cannot figure out How that happens. But then again I am Not a programmer and could even try.

1) In this latest version I tried to convert an AC3 Audio in XviD AVI to MP3 so I can play it on my Netgear stand-alone media player. Well I checked the Converted file with VLC and Audio was way out of Sync with Video. So, I went back to 3.2.0.4 and viola worked perfect. A/V is in Sync.

2) The other problem that I experience with every single version of XMedia is once I take an MP4 or MKV and I normalize the Audio, and Copy Video and I chose the MKV for output container. That MKV file will not Fast Forward, and when I stop it and want to replay it goes back to the Start of the movie ... frustrating as heck. May be Sebastian can fix this.

Thanks Sebastian for Your Program! :)

For processing single files, this is a fantastic transcoder. Load your favourite preset, make your tweaks (if any) and you're all set. Love it.

HOWEVER, the latest version (3.2.1.2) is troublesome for me as I can no longer scrub in neither forward nor reverse directions on my Panasonic ST50 series TV. I discovered the profile settings were the same between it and my previous installation which was v3.2.0.4. I have since downgraded back to v3.2.0.4 and I'll be sticking with it unless there's a major functionality improvement in future versions. I suspect the issue is with the updated FFMPEG which was used - either bad commands are being issued to FFMPEG or the updated FFMPEG itself is buggy.

For me, the major improvement I would like to see is a more powerful batch conversion set up as the current batch processing doesn't allow for manipulating subtitles and video frame rates for all selected video clips. This makes it a painful task if you have 200 clips that you might like to render the subtitles into, especially if there's only one subtitle track for it to work on with each clip. Even if it saved the job queue to an XML which can then be manually edited using Notepad and some Find and Replace trickery would be sufficient.

I've asked the author about this so hopefully there will be something in a future release which would be highly beneficial for me - provided that the encoding issue described above is fixed.

well, perhaps the problem I was experiencing was not necessarily the program,

I had been using an older version of MediaInfo 7.34, I deliberately stayed with this older version because of additional software that has been loaded into the install exe that can be added(basically junk)on versions later than this version, I tried updating twice with newer versions and finally went to a very recent upgrade (7.67) and low & behold this version of MediaInfo displays the framerate as *constant*..***note that two the older versions did not***.

Curious, is it MediaInfo or XMedia?........has my curiosity peaked as no other mkv file I've worked on displays any framerate as being variable.

That aside.....this is STILL a great little program

This is a great video editing tool, I usually make use of Handbrake for all of my re-encoding of most any x264 video whether it be 1080p, 720p or just SD 480p, that program is rock solid, but one of the processes that Handbrake cannot do is to upscale the resolution of any project I am working on.

I came across XMedia Recode, it is a versatile program that does let me upscale what I need to, and it also has filters that I find useful, most being the Brightness/contrast feature, very handy.

If there one issue that I have come across it is the programs constant practice to encode video in a *variable* framerate mode. The program just refuses to encode in a constant mode. This is annoying as I don't have any use for a file that has a variable framerate mode, when was the last time you came across a Bluray movie that didn't use a constant 23.976 framerate mode? Everything I do is in a x264 mode and I require that constant mode. Even if selecting *original* the program stills re-encodes that the framerate to variable.

If the individual who created this program can alter this little quirk the program would be *Golden*.

nice little program.

Since 3.1.4.9, all subsequent versions cannot convert AC3 5.1 to

All the talking comes out of the left speaker. Handbrake handles
the audio perfectly, but has no video copy (passthru) option.

when using Xmedia Recode 3.1.7.4

Try this:

1. Take an mkv that contains:
a. A constant frame rate h264 video stream
b. An AC3 audio stream, 48Khz sample rate
c. NO audio delay as reported by MediaInfo
d. Chapters and subtitles

2. Load into Xmedia Recode 3.1.8.6
a. Set video mode to copy
b. Set audio mode to convert, AC3, normalize
c. Add subtitle

3. Add job and encode

4. Check encode with MediaInfo
a. Delay relative to video: 1mn 5s or 65531 ms

Excuse the typo in my last post. I meant to say that for the test file in the MediaInfo report, there is NO "delay relative to video" in the encode with 3.1.7.4 - but there IS a delay of 65 seconds in the encode with 3.1.8.3. Again this is for the same test file. I have tested other MKVs with the same result.

The MKV with the delay plays OK as an MKV - but converting to something else (such as an M2TS file) introduces the delay.

My previous post mentioned an audio/video sync problem when trying to change the volume of an mkv file. Tested version 3.1.7.9 on a batch of 50 50-minute mkvs. A random sampling test turned up no sync problems.

I have noted that in 3.1.7.8 the following problem occurs:

I often raise the audio gain of an mkv file by copying the h264 video stream and converting the AC3 audio to a higher db level. This is very fast, because only the audio is recoded. This method used to work in previous versions of XMedia Recode (at least it did several months ago). I can batch dozens of mkvs in minutes.

In 3.1.7.8, however, a delay relative to video of 65 seconds is introduced every time I try the audio gain. I've tried both the normalize and manual db increase, and Xmedia Recode always adds the 65 second delay. I've tried both using enabling and disabling A/V synch, with the same result.

Upon further testing, Confirmed that version 3.1.6.6 and 3.1.7.2 do NOT have this audio sych problem.

Have noticed with interest there's an Opencl tab in the options with nothing in the settings to change yet, looking forward to using my GTX 680 to give the CPU's a hand when I need to transcode. Though mostly I'm using it just to transcode only audio and copying the h264 video out of the mkv container to a standard MP4 file.

Terrific freeware utility regardless, will be donating when there's an English version of the website as my German is terrible lol

Possible bugs in the most recent version (3.1.7.6) - I have routinely used XMedia Recode to remux MKVs as MP4s, and it has always worked flawlessly. However, starting in 3.1.7.6, certain MKVs cause it to crash when remuxing, but these same MKVs work fine in the previous version, 3.1.7.4. Weirder still is that these MKVs *will* work in 3.1.7.6 if I *first* remux a different, working MKV. So far the MKVs that have caused it to crash have all been 1080p, 23.97, H.264, and contained two audio tracks, one stereo AAC and one 6 channel AC-3. (But, not all MKVs with those specs cause it to crash.)

Despite this weird problem, the program is very excellent at what it does, that is very quickly converting, or in my case remuxing videos from one container to another. If this program could be fixed up a bit to remove the weird bugs and quirks (buttons get disabled and cant be renabled, resolutions sometimes listed wrong on the "jobs" page even though it encodes correctly) it would be just about the best video converter/remuxer out there.

It comes up clean on TrendMicro on Jotti, but is REPORTED as trojan by TrendMicro on VirusTotal.

It comes up clean on ClamAV on VirusTotal, but is REPORTED as suspicious by ClamAV on Jotti.

So these results aren't even consistent.

I've been using Xmedia as decent replacement to Handbrake. However I have a few issues which need to be addressed in upcoming releases to make it PERFECT for digitising my DVD collection:

-Xmedia does not apply the correct delay (- or +) when converting the audio track of DVDs, I am finding myself having to run the resulting MP4 through MKVtoMP4 just to add the required audio delay which adds between 15-30 mins of processing time :(

-Xmedia can't detect the foreign speaking subtitles on certain DVDs (the subtitles which are on by default when you play a DVD in in VLC/Windows Media/Standalone DVD Player) - I am having to go into VLC, play the DVD and select 'subtitles' from the context menu for ALL DVDs just to see if it has these foreign speaking sections

-If I crop a DVD source (I always do to remove the borders) and the DVD has foreign speaking subtitles which occur in the cropping space, the program will crash when it gets to the foreign speaking part. I can't even rip the subs manually and manually convert to SRT/ASS as the program will crash when doing so also. This can be sorted by resetting all subtitle positions before hand and having them display in a stand postion.

I hope these issues get resolved as I think this is a great program.

I had used this program since I use XP. I also used on Vista and Win7. But I haven't used it for a year since version 3.0.9.0. A week ago I bought a Toshiba Satallite P850 laptop. The OS is Windows 8. I want to test its magnificent CPU i7-3630QM. When I run XMR it asked me to update. Updated itself to 3.1.5.5. But it didn't work. Then I installed version 3.1.5.4. After switching to another converter and having the same issue, and then trying some commercial ones, none of them work. 3.1.4.9 fixes the transcoding problem I reported against 3.1.4.8.
XMedia Recode is a great way to transcode audio while just copying video.
Interface is generally good, although marred by some quirks -- be careful to check job options before encoding.
Quality of MPEG-4 video output not as good as Handbrake, so I use XMedia Recode just for audio transcoding.

Awesome tool! It's compact, runs great, and doesn't try to install any toolbars or crap like that. I just use it to convert MKVs to MP4s to stream to my Apple TV and it works beautifully, you can set up as many jobs as you like and let it go nuts for a while converting whole seasons of shows for you. I hate MKVs, I don't know why anyone uses that shitty container when MP4s do the exact same thing with the added benefit of actually working on all your devices(PS3, Apple stuff) without having to transcode, but this program easily fixes that problem.

So glad I found this, every other program I tried was a total mess.

I have first posted the resize problem is due to libswscale of ffmpeg on October 5 2011 here. It appeared to be fixed in one version...may be not. Still this important bug has not been fixed, I am seeing at least one version every month, to detect it is crashing.... is there any meaning for these updates? codecs will not get frequent important updates, xvid has been updated long back, though x264 is updated, the quality difference is not much from one year old version.
So the main reason for updates must be the bug fixes, Do not waste your energy in just updating codecs.
Please please please fix the known bugs...........audio isuues, mkv issues and the first and most important is resizing issue.

Just tried swapping the libswscale.dll files as noted in recent suggestion...still doesn't work on 75% of machines I try it on. Most recent version crashes when scaling.....older versions crash when scaling (3.0.6 and other suggested version)...versions crash when trying to swap the libswscale.dll files. In fact, the versions I just tried even crashed when keeping the size the same. This did NOT use to be the case with earlier libswscale.dll versions. But now simple transcodes don't work on a variety of machines.

Such a shame as when it does run (as it does on my one Win7 system), it's a great program. I'm not sure why this front-end has this particular problem when I've never seen it occur while trying literally dozens of other FFMPEG front ends over the last few years. There are also still some problems with applying color correction. It will work on one clip in your list but if you're encoding multiple clips, it won't let you apply color correction to batches. Again...not sure why as this would seem to be a command line call somewhere in the applied settings. But overall....IF you can get it to work, it's a good program.

Hello all,

the Versions regarding the previous post are 3.0.6.0 and 3.0.8.1. Sorry !

And to mention here, the internal xvid conversation is slow, better install the divx codec and use divx in conversation setting (windows divx install needed). If your destination container is mkv, and your player does not accept it, you have to remux the mkv from XMedia Recode with mkvtoolnix. This is fast, because it does not change audio and video, it only changes the internal storage structure of the mkv file. Start with mkvtoolnix 3.3 or older. Some DLNA players (SAT Receiver or TV) do not accept mkv muxed versions after 3.3.0. Avoid header compression (available in newer versions of mkvtoolnix).

Hello all,

regarding 2 most common problems:

1. resize
Problem was introduced after Version 3.6.0, so check this version first. If it fixes your resize problem, try changing the libswscale.dll from 3.6.0 with your version. This fixed it on Version 3.8.1 .This workaround does not work with every available version. If the version is incompatible, program crashes when using i.e add borders or other functions from that lib.

2. If the program crashes on your system, first check your media filter, codec settings. The source file should always be playable outsite the application, i.e mediaplayer. Next delete the existing XMediaRecode.ini and restore the original Installation from zip or reinstall the complete Application.

3. Start with a simple conversion first, simple standard res mpeg avi, mpeg source file and with the default settings for a common destination format i.e mp4. If this works, save the ini. Then modify the destination step by step to your requirements. If it crashes, restore ini.

Testet it on 6 different systems XP SP3, Vista SP1 and Win7 and Win7 SP1 I could get my hands on. Try 3.6.0 Version first, if you encounter problems. You can have different versions on the same machine, if you use the zipped versions only

Please respond, if a note from above solved an issue on your system with a short description. Maybe the Developer is able to use the collected infos here.

Good luck

I found this program when I was looking for a solution to prepare many video files so I could stream them from a NAS to an iPad without having to re-encode the video. The source video files are encoded H.264 720p with 6 channel DTS audio MKV files. I wanted to convert them to MP4 files with AAC audio and without re-encoding the video. The "Video copy" and the batch job function of this program made it easy. It typically takes about 12 minutes to convert a 2-hour video on my system. I'm using the FileBrowser app on the iPad to stream and play the files.

I suppose I could have done the job just using the underlying utilities, but XMedia Recode made it so easy.

This is a great solution for converting the files for streaming to the iPad, but probably not if I needed to store them on the iPad. In that case, re-encoding would be better to reduce their file size.

Ok, so this version I'm using, 3.1.2.8 works really great on 1 out of my 3 computers. I am converting all kinds of videos from all over, youtube, torrents, homemade on my android... etc... to h264 and it is amazing. I had been using Handbrake but I find that it doesn't make as pretty an output at the same quality settings but more importantly, Handbrake skews the audio when the source is AC3 most times and I can't seem to find a way to prevent that. Xmedia Recode has never, not once, messed up the audio on any of my files. Like I said, when it works, it's a beautiful thing. The only thing I can't get it to do is put the MOOV atom at the front of the file for easy streaming but I simply use MP4Faststart after the encode and that is taken care of.

The real problem is that it won't work at all on 2 of my computers. On one, running Windows Server 2003, it did work... like once or twice. Then it crashed and hasn't worked since. Now when you start an encode, it says finished in about 1 second and outputs an empty file. Also, it will not display a preview in the filters section.
The other computer, my laptop running Windows 7 64bit, just as my main machine does where Recode works great, will not display a preview at all. Never has. I haven't actually tried encoding on it because without the preview, I'm not sure what I will get.

I have sent a couple emails to the developer but now I read that he never responds to emails so I guess that will lead nowhere. How frustrating.

Anyway, Overall.... a 5

27 year video professional here. I own a high-end production facility and have used expensive encoding solutions like Rhozet Carbon Coder (Now ProMedia Carbon) Telestream Episode, Procoder and others. I also use free and shareware encoders as well...primarily because may of the paid apps are as buggy and convoluted as the open-source ones, and because some of the freebies offer options the paid ones don't (like Apple ProRes support).

Xmedia Recode COULD be the best in it's class if the developer would:

1. Fix the scale/size problem that has plagued the application for over a year (maybe longer).
2. Participate in the forums here and other places where users discuss the app.
3. Answer emails sent to him.

I have it working great on two machines...one a high-end Windows 7 workstation and another an older HP XW6200 workstation running WinXP. However, on every other computer I've ever installed it on (office computer, home desktop, home laptop, work laptop, other office workstations), if you scale a video the app crashes as soon as you start an encode. It works fine if you keep the size the same, so it's a well-documented issue with the FFMPEG scaling library. But the problem has to be in how the developer implements FFMPEG, because the exact same version of it works fine on dozens of other encoding tools, such as Avanti, Tencoder, Format Factory, StaxRip, Handbrake etc.

When it runs on a system, it's nearly as good as apps that cost hundreds of dollars. There are quirks in the interface and its functionality, but if you've ever used Telestream Episode, this tool is no more quirky than that. By the way, we purchased 2 licences (at $1000) of Episode last year. Our experience with it was so bad and the software so unreliable that we asked for (and got) our money back a year later! I can say without hesitation that if you can get Xmedia Recode to run without the sizing bug, it's BETTER than Telestream Episode's regular version and likely as good as their pro version, which costs $1000 per license.

One thing to note, Xmedia Recode is simply a front-end for FFMPEG so it would be easy to blame the sizing crash problem on it, but as noted, dozens of other front-ends use the same version of FFMPEG without this issue, so the problem seems to be in how the developer compiles and integrates FFMPEG into his app.

If he could fix this issue and would participate on forums and ever answer an email (I've sent him several), I dare say he could sell this app for $59 or even higher and make a nice amount of money on it.

Ease of use is 5 because it allows access to ALL the settings for all the codecs it supports, including the ones that require an engineer to understand, such as qunatizers, groups of pixels, and other such settings. In most software these are automatically determined (educated "guessed") by the software encoder, but in XMediaRecode they are fully settable by the user. Usually I just use the ones I understand such as "frame rate" and leave the rest at default. If you just ignore the advanced settings and don't bother to try to figure them out, then ease of use becomes a 10.

What hurts the ease of use category, gives the functionality category a 10/10! Again though, using the more advanced settings will require an engineer who's familiar with the inner workings of a given codec to determine the correct settings for converting a given video. So to the average user, I again recommend just sticking with the basic settings, and if you have to wonder "what does this do" then just don't mess with it.

Value for money is a 10/10, cause it's FREE!

Overall score = 3. This "overall" takes a hit, because of a category that isn't in the ratings. That category would be reliability (freeness from bugs). And let me tell you right now this software is ANYTHING but reliable (if a reliability category existed, I'd give it a "1"). FLV files saved from Youtube are like PULLING TEETH to just get it to convert without spontaneously crashing during the conversion. Even worse, is that it's conversion bugs are completely illogical. Converting FLV (h264 video in FLV container) to AVI (any codec) directly causes it to crash, but if I first convert the FLV file to MPEG2 (MPEG2 video stream in MPG container), and then convert the MPEG2 to AVI (any codec), it works perfectly. It seems that the internal state is not consistent, depending on what decoding was done prior to the reencoding.

I'm not sure how the program works internally, but the most sensable solution would be to have it convert any video input into a series of raw RGB24 images in memory, and then encode the raw image date into whatever the destination format is. That way it won't matter what the original encoding was, because when rencoding it will be working with raw images as if it was creating the output video from scratch (from a series of BMP images).

Unfortunately in an effort to optimize memory use (so you wouldn't need 4gb of ram for every minute of video), the author of this software has sacrificed reliability

I've tried several version of this, mainly going to x264/MKV and XviD/AVI. x264 encoding seems fine, and encodes a 1080p TS file to 720p at around the same as other apps I use (about 40-50fps). XviD though is extremely slow. With other apps I can convert a 1080p or 720p TS file to 624x352 using XviD at around 130fps on the first pass and 100fps on the second, yet this encodes the same files using the same settings at around 40fps on the first and only 10fps on the second. It took nearly 90 minutes to encode a 32 minute 720p file to 352p file and yet it's using 6 threads just like the other apps and 100% CPU and they take only a few minutes. Something's not right there at all.

As to the app itself, the GUI and layout is pretty good. Rather than loads of tabs for different options, the different options here are set under a drop down list and the interface changes accordingly. I didn't at first get why any changes to the audio would stick, but then realised I had to highlight the stream in the stream list, which is done in case there are multiple streams and you want different settings for each. There are loads of presets there for different devices, but personally I prefer to do all my own settings. If the really slow XviD encoding is sorted then this would be one I would use a lot more often. Overall, pretty good, and so far no bad encodings or crashes.

Definitely about the best ffmpeg front end I've tried. I haven't had any problems but I haven't torture tested it, and I don't see a really compelling reason to use it rather than handbrake for h.264 until I'm convinced its handling is more robust. But for other formats it works very well. The output is excellent.

I don't think it'll make me stop using avidemux quite yet though.

Layout and ease of use is very good, but it's not a good program for a beginner. Workflow is a bit cockeyed at first but it works well once you get on ton it. The lack of english docs is a real problem but there are guides available on the web.

It's definitely good enough for me to keep an eye on newer updates.

Basically all I am trying to do is convert an MKV file to MP4 without re-encoding.
Why? Because my Sony Bravia TV does not support MKV.

Open MKV video file.
In 'Format' tab, select Profile: Custom, Format: MP4, File extension: mp4.
In 'Video' tab, select 'Video Copy'.
In 'Audio' tab, select Modus: 'Copy'
Click 'Add Job'.
Click 'Encode'.

The 'Encoding' window appears briefly and then disappears.

It happens when audio is AC3 or AAC (I've not tried any other audio format).

I am using the portable version of XMedia Recode (if that makes a difference!).

The last version that worked was v3.0.8.1 (not 3.0.8.0 as I stated previously).

I love that they always update to the latest x264 lib. The options are clearly laid out. It's a direct competitor to the Handbrake family of encoders and a serious alternative to paid version encoders. Has an advantage over staxrip, megui and ripbot in that it processes your files immediately instead of demuxing and indexing first. (Not demuxing and indexing could lead to errors on bad source material though).

But as mentioned before, this version muxes with an apparent audio delay of ~1 minute, 5 seconds. Maybe it's a fault of lavf?

Unstable release that crashes everytime I add a job under the Jobs tab. I click on the "+" button and the whole program disappears on it's own. So I currently can't add multiple jobs one after another.

And now when I do add just one individual job, the output becomes a "undf" file while trying to play it in VLC.

The way this program currently stands it gets an EPIC FAIL.

Like the below commenter, Nothing above 3067 works for me. All have the same problem.

Using newer versions with the same MKV settings H264 constant qual 20 or average bitrate for DVDs of 1500 to 2000 all videos seem to have have the preceding frame still showing
causing the video to rapidly seem to stop and start with a trailing effect from the previous frame. Older versions work just fine.

I have skipped the versions 3.0.7.x to 3.0.8.5 due to stability and functionality issues for me. Testing now Rev 3.0.8.8. Crop and resize is now working again, tested with avi/xvid and mkv/h264 dest.
Many thanks to the developers. The overall stability has increased. My favorite converter tool is back, so I can use it for 90% of the tasks.
I prefer rock solid functionality, dont want overloaded programs.
Beside this I suggest some "fine tuning" on existing functions:
1. did not find a setting to change the color of the rendered subs
2. did not find how to render only forced subs

Thanks for this awesome tool.

Fast retested Version 3.0.7.6
Audio copy option is back (fixed in 3.0.7.4). Still have problems on some conversation jobs with cropping and resizing. No uncommon setting : dest. is mkv with h264 (reencode) and ac3 (copy).
Source are sat recordings 1920x1080 that only plays on the sat box. Used dest Profile is Panasonic TV (mkv) with some mods see below. This is the default setting after start. Selecting source, change profile to high@level 4.0, select cq mode with cq=23, change audio to copy, adjust crop and resize to source, both equal values, start job results in crash at start (0 processed frames in dest.) This did not happen in 3.0.6.0 with the same source files.

Curious is, if I change profile to userdefined with mkv with ac3 and same settings in video and audio and cropping as above job works, and then back to Panasonic mkv, cropping and resizing job still works.
Every attempt with the same (documented) settings on video and audio, to get a compatible file for the sat box and the tv.

The preview screen does not fit exactly into the window, so by cropping visually you miss lines at the bottom, because you dont see them. Would be nice to get it fixed, just adust the frame around the preview screen a bit.

The program is my preferred tool for my tasks. Many thanks to the developers.

Best regards

Xmedia Recode 3.0.7.0 portable cuts, crops and encodes ac3 perfectly for me,to a 2 pass PROPERLY finished file format, and it is my encoder of choice..The user must know the proper audio to use with the video file hes trying to produce or the program WILL crash..This is NOT the fault of the program but just the fault of either inproper inputs and or outputs..I will say that I only encode mainstream file formats like mkv-avc/h264,mp4,wmv,xvid,flv,mpg,avi,mp3,ac3,aac..I have no use for propietary output file formats like Apples mp4/aac..I havent tried encoding to all the file formats in the dropdowns but I have encoded enough with this program since it came out to know that it works just fine and produces a great finished product...;)

I watch the videos on a Sony Bravia 46" LCD TV. The quality is not HD, but certainly very acceptable. The downside of this program is help is in German. Not much support for English language. I tried different presets, plus fooling around with custom settings, you know just to tinker with. It will crash if your settings are not right. No notice or anything, it just goes away! All in all its a decent program for the price.

I use this program at least 10 times a week without a problem and I reviewed it before. But it will crash, close and disappear if the INPUT file is improper is some way (like a bad header or starting point). It may also crash, close and disappear if your output file is not set up correctly. It would be nice if the program warned you first before it closed or gave you some kind of error message. There are programs that are easier to use but Xmedia Recode gives me the best finished product, and I gave it a 10 because of that.If Xmedia Recode starts up in your PC then there is NUTHING wrong with your computer or your operating system or Xmedia Recode. The problem is ALWAYS the INPUT file,if Xmedia Recode dosent like it,,it will just crash without warning. When I made those same INPUT files proper and used the right parameters on the output file then Xmedia Recode encoded them without an issue. This program does have a learning curve to it and it is not for a beginner in my opinion...;)~

Worked like charm until 2.3.3.3. did not use the tool for sometime and upgraded to win7 64 bit in between. Downloaded the available version. The program started crashing. After that keep on trying all versions and all crashed. Was suspecting 64 bit.

Finally after a hint from Baldrick, started experimenting with different encode parameters to find the problem. And I found the problem to be resizing and module crashing is libswscale.dll which is resizing library of ffmpeg.

I tried downloading old versions and noticed 2.3.3.3 works fine. If you want to use the program stay with 2.3.3.3. Copying libswscale.dll from 2.3.3.3 to latest version (3.0.3.4) solved crashing issue in latest version.

Tried replacing the latest dll from fmpeg but understand the program is actually using very old version of ffmpeg dlls avcodec51, I think the latest is avcodec53. I remember to see "updated ffmpeg" with every new version????. I am not 100% sure here.

I hope the developer will fix this issue as soon as possible.

When converting to VCD, go to Video Settings tab, and check the VBVbuffersize

I did not find the initial screen to be intuitive while it was not difficult to figure out it was not very intuitive newbies will definitely need to use a guide.

Crashes with no meaning full messages, I spent two hours trying to encode the movie Obsessed with AC3 audio, at first directly from the disk with AnyDVD in the background couldn't even make it trough the set up process would crash at various points tried many different settings. I then ripped the movie to the hard drive and tried again. Program would crash while encoding after multiple attempts I could not get the program to complete successfully. Going back to handbrake until i have the time to write my own program. If handbrake would accept avisynth scripts it would be perfect.

It is a great little program if you can get it to work properly. Current version does not do subtitle copying properly. It strips the secondary time codes so that the subs stay on the screen in the new mkv file you are creating. I was hoping to use this program to convert some old mkv and ogm files of mine to bluray ready mkv files to through into multiavchd as it can not handle ogg audio properly. The files turned out great except that the sub tracks were completely destroyed. I hope this gets fixed in a later version, but there is no english forum, and the program is on the wall of shame for FFMPEG, so I do not know if these issues will get fixed.

I agree that this program has more problems than just user error. Just this morning, I tried converting a DVD that I have into an XviD file (using avi container). I tried demuxing the audio, without changes, and XMR crashed after the second XviD pass. So, I tried again, this time without the audio. Same thing. Odd, though, that I had tried to test XviD, to see if it could two-pass encode anything (creating a test encode from the first four or five seconds of old MP4 file), it worked without problems. I do hope that the Mpeg-4/LAVF encoder isn't as buggy, although I would much rather use XviD. I'm guessing that it is much better than Mpeg-4/LAVF, since LAVF is meant to encode anything. Odds are, that once LAVF has been made able to create a video compression format properly, the FFMpeg devs stop improving it, releasing only basic bug fixes (unlike XviD, which has recently released newer masking technologies, some new VHQ thing, (probably) better RD optimizations, and (probably) better multi-threading performance).

To all the people in here having problems with Xmedia Recode: This program is finnacky but it does work properly. When you open your file to be encoded make sure you use the proper video and audio codecs, bitrates, framsizes, etc, etc in the dropdown menues or just use the defaults in the dropdowns at first.(like mkv/ac3,or xvid/mp3,or mp4/aac until you become knowledgeable enough to start tinkering with the settings.Take a couple of hours and read up on this stuff, its not rocket science.Xmedia Recode will crash without warning if YOU try to make a finished product that is NOT compliant or will not view properly in media players and such This program once mastered,,to me is the best for encoding all types of video and audio it is complex and yet it is easy to use..I agree,it would be nice if it warned you that what YOUR trying to do will not work or will not be compliant.Over the years of using this program 100% of the times it crashed,it was MY FAULT.Ive used many programs in the last 15 years and this program will not be the last but for now it is my staple for changing file formats and it does it well.Try using the portable version of 3.0.0.5 just unwrap the folder and create a shortcut to the exe file,,this way the program will not interfere with anything else in your pc and this version does work fine...;)~

That's right, every new update are buggy. I hate the comments for the changelog, it's always the same blabla (Update of ffmpeg / Update of x264 codec / Troubleshooting / minor bug fixes) that means nothing and no details.

It used to be my favorite software but since v2.3.1.8, i'm bored => nothing new, no improvement and no forum to discuss with Sebastian Dorfler for wishlist.

For example v3.0.0.2, it would fantastic to give users new functions for an upgrade.

So sad to see a good tool become a dinausaure.

This program Rocks! It converts everything with every option that an advanced user would want. It would be the ultimate converter, exept...

It seems to me that some of the new versions have been getting more and more buggy. The current version has one problem where it crashes on the second pass of a two-pass encoding task. At least that's what it does to me when I try to use the XviD codec. IDK about the other codecs, though. It also crashes if you try to use the deblocking filter.

But at least you can do some post processing now. A few verions ago, there was no way you were ever going to even resize the video without crashing. I'm sure all of the current bugs will be fixed eventually. After all, Sebastian Dorfler is awesome!!!

Also, usually bugs are fixed faster than they have been recently, although I'm sure Sebastian has some good reason for taking so much longer (such as being busy with something else, or maybe he's having trouble finding the cause of the bugs or something). That's why I still rated this program so high.

This is by far the best media encoder out there and I've used a ton of them. Encodes quick with excellent quality. One problem I do have since I swapped out MoBo's is the video preview is gone in the filters/preview tab which makes the program unusable until I can fix it.

2.3.2.9 does not work at all in Win2k, though WIn2k is supposedly supported. You just get the message

Version 2. 3.0.4 is the last version that will work on Win2k. All later versions abort as above.

I reinstalled 2320 because 2325 crashes out when i start the encode. The author updates this program alot and I never had a problem with any update or prior version until this one.I hope he fixes the problem as this is my encoder of choice. This is really not an encoder for a beginner. It will crash if you try matching different audio, video codecs together or if you try crazy bitrates and such but once you learn how to use it properly the end product is superb in my opinion.

I have been using XmediaRecode for a while now to convert DVDs to MP4/MKV format. Easy to set up, batch encodes, copies AC3 audio into the MP4 container. What more could you want ?

Well, it would be nice if recent updates worked. The scores I have given are for version 2.3.0.9. I have tested the subsequent versions (up to and including 2.3.2.5), and they all crash out when attempting to encode from ripped DVDs. 2.3.0.9 happily encodes the same rips without any problems. Hopefully the author can get things back on track, but for now, stick with the older version if you want a solid, reliable encoder.

I love this little piece of software for converting videos from one format to another, while keeping the frame rate and aspect ratio as the original. The only strange drawback to this software is if you try and batch convert a bunch of videos that have different formats, frame rates, aspect ratios, etc., it will crash. I just batch-load them into the software, and pick each one to convert by clicking on it, which kinda sucks. Anyway, still it's a pretty good piece of software, and i think the author(s) will fix that loading problem eventually, which will make this software really something special!

This version fixes the loading of custom matrices, that's good. However, if you try a short encode by using the cutting tool in video preview, it just keeps on encoding beyond the stop point! I'd like to see 2 pass encoding using DivX , something Virtualdub can do. Otherwise it's a nice program with good menu layout and quality results.

Well tried v2.3.0.9 yesterday night with x264 and it doesn't crash, depends probably what you use.

The things that must be improved is :

- The subtitles options; unable to select and disable a subtitle track and unable to import a external sub.

- The calculator with hd video output, AVCHDCalculator is better for that.

- The progress remaining time when encoding is false sometime.

I use and appreciate a lot this tool and would like to thanks the author for his work.

This is a great tool. It can do much of the pre propcessing that Avisynth does without using an .avs file, such as noise reduction, sharpening, deblocking etc. It also has an excellent previewer, you can crop or pad, change resolution and see exactly how it will turn out, a single frame is all that is needed so you can see the final effect without running the previewed video. Creating 16:9 from 4:3 material is easy, you can see the result before encoding.
This version seems to create the desired file size and bitrate.
One niggle- custom matrices cannot be loaded or saved, this needs fixing.

This is an excellent software in many respects; except that the result of MPEG conversion is not DVD compliant in authoring softwares for this simple reason. For Mpeg footage to be DVD compliant, the [Profile & Level] must be MP@ML. When that profile is selected in XMedia Recode, the result always come out as MP@H-14(*) and thus renders it not DVD compliant. Please correct this minor error in your next release. I greatly appreciate your diligent and efforts. Thanks

They are not too careful about their releases. This is the second time within the last two months that problems have occurred. They need to fix the following bug: I was converting an mpg video to DVD specs. When I go to encode, it gives an error message "incorrect video" or something like that. The video was set at 29.97 NTSC. If I changed it to PAL, then it started to encode. I would get progressive video instead of interlaced, which it was. I replaced it with the old version and everything works fine.
It's a great program so, I wish it gets fixed soon!

It imports near enough any format and outputs to near enough any format. You can even import DVDs. You can choose from a list of profiles for a device or use the custom settings to configure your output. This tool is highly configurable and is much better than SUPER (Sorry erightsoft, I used your software but have now found XMedia Recode). The filters are also such a great feature of this tool, like "Denoise" for example which will remove noise, thus more bits for the parts that need them and give you better quality. It Deinterlaces, Resizes (Lanczos, Bicubic, Sinc ect.), Deblocking, Cropping ect. There is also a preview and you can save just a part of the video if you wish.

Works great for converting videos for SansaFuze. Just use the profile included (Sandisk, Sandisk Sanza Fuze) and convert. You can change the codec to DivX or Xvid (to get DualCore encoding), reduce the video-bitrate (e.g. 250), reduce the audio-bitrate (e.g. 112) to get smaller sizes.
I choose zoom, letterbox in crop menue to avoid "eggheads".
DO NOT change framerate (must be 20), DO NOT change audio frequencey (must be 44kHz).
After conversion use the tool fuzemux (freeware, a big THANKS to the author(s)) to prepare for using on the Fuze, copy to player.
I experienced NO video-audio out of sync problems and get good quality - tested with a 40 minute TV-show. Neither at the beginning nor at the end did I experience any problems.
So scrap the Sandisk Mediacoder (a 100Meg download) and use XmediaRecode !
Thanks a lot for this tool !

We've spent 2 days (about 30 hours in total) with intention of getting to the bottom of one questions on everyones mind: What's the best converter out there?

Our focus was on quality of compiled video. And that's it. Not on functionality, use, etc... Just VIDEO QUALITY. XMediaRecode & Avidemux came #1.

For example XmediaRecode compiled 1024x768 VIDEO (into H264 AVC MP4) just as Nero Recode, Total Video Converter, Xilisoft, Adobe Media Encoder CS4... and 20+ more popular commercial/free software. Yet XMediaRecode's quality was SUPERIOR. And that's comparing dozens of different videos. Main reason for SUPERIORITY is x264.

My point is: Either waste your time trying to find the best, or understand we've already wasted our time and found the answer. The 2 highest quality/file-size friendly & quality-superior software on the planet is: XMediaRecode & Avidemux.

They are 100% identical in quality. Which is great because now you can choose which of those 2 suits you more with ease of use, features, etc...

XMedia Recode is one of the complete tools out there. Some great features of this tool are -

1. Device profiles - One of the strengths of this tool. Add video, select profile, and you are good to go.
2. Customization - You can create your custom profiles and save them for future use
3. Speed improvements - While earlier versions were quite slow ( especially while using x264 )
but since 2.2.2.0 speed improvements have been great.
4. It has an easy to use interface, for changing different settings.
5. You can easily preview your videos before encoding them.
6. Can convert to Divx if you have the codec installed ( Though why would you use it given you have Xvid )
7. Frequently updated.
8. Free, which I must say is highly underrated in case of this great Gem

Highly Recommended tool, simple with no guides required to use it, click click you are done.

Excellent tool that works in Win & x64 (finally something that works!!).

However there are some bugs, the major one for me is the failure to start encode at all if the file is is trimmed at the beginning. Trimming the end of the file is fine, but not the beginning. Other than that, the outputted file is excellent and it works a treat with my DVB .ts files so I'm pretty happy.

If the trimming function had worked properly, I would have given it 10/10.

This tool is a real pleasure to use. What would make it perfect for me is if there was the option to make MP4/h.264 'streamable' for online. Super seems to be one of the few encoders that has the option to put the metadata at the beginning of the MP4 so the video streams instead of the whole file having to download before it starts playing.

The files can be fixed with the free RNDWare MetaDataMover but it would be better if it could all be done within XMedia Recode.

- support for different DVD-Angles
- different deinterlacing filters
- support for more output-resolutions
this program is getting better and better and I think you also like this features :))
Try it
By the way: I love the "CLEAN" installer of this program...

Version:2.2.2.0 has tons of improvements.

A piece of cake for newbie to RiP DVD to AVI.
Easy to Use DVD-Ripper (DVD ---> XViD + Lame, Bitrate Configurable,)
One can Use Aspect to Calculate Biterate & Size.

Bunch of Thanks to the Developers.

Note to Developer(s)
--------------------
1) Also provide an option for x264 (H264) and AC3 (Down-MiX) Audio, if possible to support output in MKV format.
2) Try to weave MPlayer and MEncoder so Video can be played in XMedia Recode, which can help to rip particular clip segment of video.

Thanks!

Don't rate this fantastic tool with 1 of 10 in every category!! You should be happy to get this great software for free!!

Very nice interface, but some frustrating shortcomings. Has preset for Sansa Fuze, and, creates output with the proper extension, but, they are rejected by the player as having the wrong format.

It also has presets for the Zune, but the H.264 preset is not able to synch without a second (synch-time) transcoding by the zune.exe program -- VERY slow. This is done when zune.exe is given a video file that can not be handled by the player.

The Zune MPEG4 preset DOES sync nicely without any further transcoding. However, neither of those presets allows for anything larger than QVGA (320x640), which is the size of the Zune's LCD -- but, the Zune can accept larger dimensions, which is beneficial when its video output is used to display on an external monitor or television.

I have not looked into how difficult (or possible) it would be to edit the Zune presets to allow larger display formats, and I have absolutely no idea where to begin with trying to figure out what to do for the Fuze. I know that others are also unable to use this program with the Fuze, and I've been unable to find anything online indicating that anyone has had any success with the Fuze.

I hope that the problem with the Fuze can be resolved, as this is a very nice program. I can not find any way to contact the author, and, I do not speak German, and I do not know if he speaks English. If anyone who can communicate with him reads this, please pass this information along to him, thanks.

Seems like a good start, but it's not making the full use of my CPU.

Really love the idea of profiles that include dozens of different end devices (i.e. specific phone models, etc).

Unfortunately, it is very slow and does not even come close to fully utilizing my quad-core system. Other programs like Nero Recode & Handbrake will max out all four cores while they are working (and working quickly!) but this barely breaks the 25% mark on any one of the cores. I can only conclude that it isn't fully optimized for the task, hence the inefficiency I'm seeming.

The update 2.1.9.1 fixes the problem with not being able to choose a profile.
So back to 9 and 10 ratings. (I wonder about these guys who immediately give it a 10 on every update... do they even try it out?)
One remaining niggle: doing an update will uninstall the previous version, including any saved settings unless you save them yourself to another folder.

I installed the latest 2.1.9.0 and it does not work under Win2k. You cannot choose any of the installed profiles except "Custom". I installed the gdiplus.dll file as instructed, still didn't work.

So I reverted to the previous version 2.1.8.4 and that still works.

I see mention of an XMedia Recode forum in other comments, but couldn't find any forum at the site to report this.

I'm sure it works under XP or later, but beware if you're using 2k.
The previous versions were excellent...

Very good freeware. Simple and intuitive interface. A little unfriendly for noobs but as freeware encoders go it's one of the very best. However, the conversion of 23.97 files to NTSC(29.97) or PAL(25.00) DVD and .AVI formats needs work as jerky and studdering video can be the end result and that's been checked on several standalone players. Needs to retain the language chosen at start and not revert to German every time. Complaints aside,it's one to watch.

Glitches
- The progress bar does not work properly when you set a range, it display the remaining time like if you would be encoding the entire video instead a fragment.
- The crop function is a bit odd, you can see what you crop in realtime, you have to crop and then play the video to see the results.
- It create vbr mp3 files without xing/lame header, this happen even if you use the most common lame presets.
- It takes more than 15 sec to run this prog in my pc, Athlon 2Ghz 1GB RAM, it need to spped up the load of the gui.

Missing features
- "Direct Stream Copy" option of video and audio if the streams are compatible with the output container
- A good deinterlace filter besides the one that came with the codec
- A good denoiser
- "keep original" preset in audio sample rate

Better tha FormatFactory for video conversion, best FFMPEG GUI that I've tried so far.

FINALLY, a video converter app that doesn't come with a craptastic skinned interface. WTF is up with this trend in converter softwares? Are they trying to win some secret "shittiest looking UI" contest?

Technically, it's also pretty sweet. It converted a movie in rmvb format to divx avi with no problems at all, and it was very easy to setup.

My only complaint is that I couldn't find an option to have the converted copy of the file be automatically created in the same folder as the original. Other than that, it's a pretty swell proggie!

Why such a weird range of scores? Well.....it doesn't work for the iPod Touch, which is why I downloaded this program! The program keeps producing a video with a profile of main@3.0 when the iPod calls for a video profile of baseline@3.0. Yea, i could tinker with the more advanced settings for the desired result, but does anyone know exactly what those settings are? Not too many, I bet. And I'm sure not too many want to bother trying. The program has a good interface, but functionally it's horrible with the iPod. I'm all ears if someone can correct me. I'll probably tinker, anyway. But the overall low score stays for now.

This is excellent. But one thing that this and many other encoders lack is a tick option to make mp4 streamable, so it will stream on a web page in Flash Player. Otherwise the whole file has to download before it starts playing.

Super is one of the few that has this option.

I haven't extensively used this, but converting a XviD 1.1.2 Final file w/ VBR audio to 3gp for a Motorola Razr V3 came out great. The controls are idiot-proof.

If you'd like to make this free application portable, go to http://www.portablefreeware.com/?sc=39 Extract the files from the executable to a folder, with an application like 7zip. www.7-zip.org.

It'd be nice if the author added profiles for non-portable devices. Then this thing would go up to 11.
