Just to correct another's poster comment, you are not limited to a 704 x 480 size in VCD Menu Lite. The File|Image Size menu allows you to pick from 4 different sizes:

704 x 480 (VCD NTSC)
704 x 576 (VCD PAL)
720 x 480 (DVD NTSC)
720 x 576 (DVD PAL)

I discovered VCD Menu Lite 2.00 as the result of trying to help a newbie here.

The documentation included with VCD Menu Lite 2.00 says that it creates JPG's that can be converted into MPEG stills using DVDAuthorGUI. DVDAuthorGUI could then use the MPEG stills for creating DVD menus.

However, when I played around with VCD Menu Lite, I discovered that I could not make a JPG for a menu background that DVD AuthorGUI would accept as is. They always have to be resized first, to either 720x480 (for NTSC) or 720x576 (for PAL).

Initially, I had used a 704x480 screencap from my DVD recorder as the menu background, so I was not surprised when I found I had to resize the JPG from VCD Menu Lite. Then, I tried a 720x480 bitmap, and it again created a 704x480 JPG. The same thing also happened when I tried a 720x576 bitmap.

GUI for dvdauthor will accept the JPG's from VCD Menu Lite as they are, and stretch them to the correct size. ...But in spite of the fact that DVDAuthorGUI frequently crashed on my PC, I would still recommend it to a beginner over GUI for dvdauthor, by virtue of its relative simplicity.

It is OK but could be better. If VCD Menu Lite was modified to allow users the opportunity to select a video format, and the size of the JPG it makes was determined that way instead of being fixed at 704x480, it would be a more useful program, especially for beginners. If one could save a project file so that it would be possible to correct mistakes rather than start over each time, thatwould be great too.

Warning: Never got this working... Every time I attempted to start the install of this program, my anti-spyware program (latest version of eTrust PestPatrol) alerted me of this thing being infected. I gave up after four different attempts (each time i was making sure nothing else was the cause.) The last "review" sounds more like a plug for this "program".

An interesting little program to create menu images for adding to your svcd. You can select the number of menus 1-10, and add labels and pictures. This is much easier and intuitive to use. Its easier than following the fussy Photoshop method to create a menu image as mentioned in the vcd easy menu tutorial at the vcd easy website. I found the rest of that tutorial useful though! Free software is the best!
