Just want to pitch in my experience if anybody is having problem with burning on the TDK 440N external drive. FYI I'm using a Apple PowerBook G4 with 10.4

I brought the burner 2 years ago and NEVER used it once. Until recently and found out I couldn't burn to the new pack of TDK DVD-R 16x disc I just brought. How ever it burned on the 2 included DVD-R just fine. I found out I was 2 updates behind on the firmware so I did the update as requested. BTW the newest firmware listed on TDK's website for the external version was 1.0A. While a 1.0C (newer) was only listed for the 440N internal. Rest assured the 1.0C works fine on the external version. TDK just forgot to list it for both version of the same drive.

With the newest version of firmware I am STILL not able to burn to the TDK 16X DVD-R. Somewhere on the internet I found the 16X disc are of a new standard, so I returned and brought a pack of FuJiFilm 8X DVD-R. And I was right!! Armed with the newest firmware this drive is still only able to burn to disc rated no faster then 8X. So if make sure you buy 8X disc until they release a firmware newer then 1.0C If they don't.... this drive will become obsolete until 8X disc becomes unavailable.

After plenty of burns over the last year, this burner has proven itself to be a quality drive. Though it's a little finicky on the disk brands, it works well with most. I have had some issues with using -R's...sometimes it doesn't recongnize them. But only once has it not recongnized a +R disk. So, I just stick with +R's.

I've had this drive now for about 1 year. This has been a good drive. I have burned about 200 disks using a mix of tdk -r's and +r's and anything that is on sale (usually cheap generic disks) and have not made a single coaster. I have used numerous programs, roxio 6, nero, dvdxcopy, dvd shrink, ulead movie factory and have not had any problems playing them in my xbox. The only problem that I have is that it is a little slow which is the reason I gave this an 8 instead of a 10.

Burns great
burns any dvd I throw at it

only bad spot is when I try to rip some DVDs to the harddrive.

I have had this drive for about 7 months and have not produced a DVD coaster, using Comp Usa, Memorex, and TDK DVD's. The only advice I can give anyone is not to multitask while buring, and stay away from max speed when doing CD's. Great product, I would recommend to anyone. Make sure you update the firmware regularly.

This drive is definitely finicky. I managed to have a success rate of 60%. With that said just reading the reviews, and comments, it looks fair to have somewhat that ratio of htis and misses. I ended up getting another drive the HP 420i, works like a charm so far, no coasters yet. don't believe everything you read on this thread. A firmware is only one major aspect of a source of a fault, same goes for software. Judging by the feedback given on this particular unit, it's safe to say the product does not compare to the "BEST" or "KICKASS" standing that Plextor, Yamaha, Teac, and the other real good companies have.

Sure TDK is great still, they manufacture good media but hell making a coaster with TDK media tells me there is something missing. The drive is decent, despite it's lifespan it had with me (very short), but I wouldn't say it's something i'll pickup again. Don't believe everything you read from someone elses feedback, because reality has it if your going to talk you better have the REAL credentials, and the qualified experience and vast knowledge don't lie you know who you are... Gave this drive a 3, because overall it just didn't quite have the support, and enough positive feedback for me to judge it as a good drive. I will be extremely nice in saying it's a "decent" drive. Considering I only made 60 dvd's successfully with the unit, and about 25 coasters... Who cares Dual Layers are coming out soon anyway... =P

I bought this burner at Costco in August 2003 and have only good things to say about it. With Bronkow's latest firmware hack (1.09), I can now burn +RWs that my 3 Toshiba DVD players can play (6200, 2200, 1750). The speed is a little on the slow side, but as I only burn a couple of discs per week, it's not a big deal. I have had zero coasters in the 9 months I've had the TDK and have successfully burned about 200 discs. Favourite media brands: TDK, Mitsui, Memorex.

I am looking forward to TDK's dual-layer offering, whenever that comes out! I'll buy it without hesitation.

This is a fussy writer. Stick to using Ritek dye G03 and G04 garde A disks. These always work. Datawrite Red Top V3 do not work on this writer, even withe the latest firmware 1.0A.

For all those who say this burner sucks, your wrong, and to quick to say something sucks when you try something once. Im a certified technician, and yes, there are better DVD burners out there, but this unit does very well to compete with the LG 4040 and the Plextor or Pioneer DVD-R106 .. I have not made a single coster one this unit using both of the TDK +/- R's that came with plus about 40 other DVD +/- from Memorex.

If you are expierencing problems burning with NERO or recieving DISC AT ONCE ERRORS, dont fret, its a flash error. I got in contact with TDK and they stated that some unit flashes went bad. Take 5 minutes and goto TDKS website and download the latest firmware 1.0A, run the exe and restart your PC. PROBLEM SOLVED.

this burner is excellent!! i have burned about 300 discs so far with no problems (- and +). anyone having problems burning with this...buy better media. stay away from the cheap discs. they don't work in any burners very well. buy this recorder..it is way better than any LG or Pioneer..trust me!!!!

many people have the same problem when trying to burn dvds with this writer. they burn + disks fine but always have trouble burning - disks. i found the problem was solved when i removed multiple burning programmes such as clone cd & easy cd creator and nero6. have only one software installed (your choice which one). nero and easy cd creator created a massive conflict.

Installed the drive last week. It refuses to burn DVD-Rs either with Roxio (one only), Nero 6, or DeCrypter - writes the lead in then craps out. Writes DVD+Rs perfectly. TDK Tech support not interested in the error logs that I sent them from Nero - say they only support Roxio usage. Have another call in.

Horrible dvd burner, bought this at Costco after reading great reviews for 200 but it ended up being nothing but hassle, I use dvd shrink and Nero and I was only able to burn 2 watchable movies out of a stack of 10, I returned this piece of junk and bought the Plextor px-708uf and have been burning perfect copies of my movies ever since, and also at a faster rate!!!!!!!!

Bought this couple days ago from best buy for $150! So far it has worked great only 1 coaster but I was multitasking while using it. Now that I have got the hang of the burner I have successfully made 4 dvd's using Memorex DVD-R media. The 1.09 flash worked perfectlly along with the installation, was as easy as installing RAM since i just put it in and hooked it up and win xp read it right away. For 150, at 4x burning with a TDK name I highly reccomend to anyone who does not have a DVD burner yet.

This burner is awesome! Paid $179 for it at Best Buy. I've burned about 20 DVD's with it and every single one has been flawless. I've used TDK, Fujifilm, and currently using Supermedia 4x disks with it. They all play fine thru my Toshiba DVD changer. I highly recomend it but also recomend using a seperate DVD ROM to read disks with when ripping cause this ones a little slow in that department. All in all i'm very happy.

Comments posted by Tim from United States, February 11, 2004. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I made several coasters using Pinnacle software that came free with my camcorder. Tried several types of media with no luck. Even flashing to the latest firmware didn't help.

When I tried the Roxio software that came with the burner, it worked fine the first time, using Imation DVD-RW format.

I find the Roxio software much less user-friendly, but at least it works. Anyone have advice on better software that works with this burner?

I love this thing. So far 25+ discs burned, and no coasters. The install was simple and had no problems. I definitely recommend this drive (oh, and a copy of DVD Shrink).

Works good. Had to upgrade firmwear 1.a ( the latest) to use some no name dvd- rw but all is well.

I have an external burner connected via 1394 cable. For a multi-format burner, it is making about 20% coasters! The burners mysteriously quits in the middle of a burn session. I have tried Nero 6.3 as well as CopyToDVD with about similar results. I am using tdk 4x +R, 2x -R media. After getting technical support from TDK, they had me change everything on my computer/software, but don't admit to any fault of the burner. I am not a newbie in computers, but their tech support really sucks. The last guy "Eric" told me "good-luck in trying to return the product to the store". Know what -- that's exactly what I intend to do with it this weekend.

It works great.
I paid $179 at best buy. I've written several DVD+RWs and +Rs. Haven't had one coaster. I used DVDXCopy Plat and Nero 6. It might take 35 min to write, but for the cost its worth it.

This burner is awsome! I have burned about 30 + and -R discs and have not coastered a single one yet. I've been using it with Nero 6 and AnyDVD to make backup copies of my movies and it's all flawless. Definatly one of the best DVD burners on the market for the price.

bought it for a 100 bucks at compusa...burned 20 movies on hypermedia, tdk, sony, and some unbranded blank dvd -r, all working fine...very happy with the product for the money spent! i'd say it's a best buy for the price.

Comments posted by xqusu from Other, January 04, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

I'm using the external model (connected via Firewire). This has been an excellent burner. I've used all sorts of media with no problems, it just works with everything I throw at it. Typically use Nero 6 Ultra or TMPGEnc DVD Author to make discs. My only complaint is that it is very slow to load a disc, taking 30 seconds or longer before the disc is ready. But I can burn discs while doing other tasks on the computer and have never had a buffer underrun or any othe error. Best burner I've ever owned.

Comments posted by Eddie from Other, January 02, 2004. Rated this writer 9 of 10.

I had problems using DVD-Rs (Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, and TDK) on this burner.
Although DVD+Rs worked fine.
I finally found some decent help on my fifth contact with TDK technical support.
The tech suggested that I update the ASPI drivers from the Adaptec web site and uninstall other DVD burning software. He wanted me to keep Roxio it is officially supported by TDK. Anyway I updated the ASPI drivers and kept Nero.
Now my burner is able to burn DVD-Rs. I believe it was the ASPI driver update that did the trick.

My system is even underrated for the TDK burner.
The owners manual suggested using a 1Ghz processor.
I'm using a 400Mhz.

I'm not sure if I should fault TDK for this issue.
I will give the burner an 8 on the rating scale.

Bought this at CircuitCity after bad experience with MicroAdvantage drive. Fellow at store suggested Memorex media pack with 3 DVD-R and 3 DVD-RW discs. Installed the drive and quickly ruined 2 of the Memorex RWs and one DVD-R. Then tried the TDK DVD-R provided in the box (TDK provides a DVD-R and a DVD+R. Why don't they provide RWs??). In all cases, write attempts failed, the drive hung and the discs were rendered useless.

Got the latest firmware from TDK's support site (not the easiest to navigate) and tried the TDK DVD+R provided in the box. That worked, and was readable on our PS-2 (which we use as a DVD player for our kids) and a Memorex standalone DVD player. So, I ran back out to CCity to get TDK +RW media. Success! I still want to do some more testing, but I think I'll be happy with the product. I'm rating it a 6 for not being able to successfully burn a disc out of the box.
