Good burner, with upgraded firmware, no issues with Ritek Ridata DVD + and - R and dual layer Ridata +r

Hard to believe all the complaints I'm reading. Had a $50 gift card for BestBuy (what a nightmare), so copped this thing. Upgraded to 140F as soon as I read about it (had to email Cyberhome support for it, but you can find it on the net now), and haven't had so much as a burp since. Burns Verbatim +R 8X, +and-R 16X, Ritek +R 4X, -R 4X, and +R 8X, TDK +R 4X, and Memorex +and-R 4X just fine, although it's happier with +R higher speed media. Won't overspeed, however, thus the "9" rating. Using it in a Biostar 210N with XP SP1a and MS IDE drivers (I've never tried NVidia's drivers). It's got a short form factor, so it's perfect for an SFF rig. I've had Samsung 552B's and U's so I KNOW what problems are (in case you're wondering). Can't say anything bad about this drive, except that now I buy Benq's (1620's have the same Philips Nexperia chipset, by the way).

I give this drive an 8, I guess. Purchased 24 December, 2004 at BestBuy for $49USD net.

I've had no problems burning:
8x TDK DVD-R (TTG02)
8x KHypermedia DVD+R (CMC MAG-E01-00)
8x FujiFilm DVD-R (ProdiscF01)

Nero CD/DVD Speed reported the following on ~30 DVD burns.
On the ProdiscF01, PI errors (C1) trend progressively upward toward the end of the burns with multiple PImax spikes above 250.
On the CMC MAG-E01-00 burns, PI errors are <10 until the ~2.5GB and <50 toward the end.
On the TTG-02 (DVDDecryptor burned these at 4x, Nero at 8x), there were PI errors <20 until ~3.5GB, <100 until ~4GB, then some >400 from 4GB to end accompanied with high jitter levels. These media burn very similarly on my Toshiba SD-R5272.

DVD-Video discs read fine on Toshiba SD-4700.
DVD data read fine on Toshiba SD-R5272.

One minor irritation is that the rather large and bright LED blinks during recording. If the drive is near eye level, this can become annoying.

My HP DVD burner 4X went bad after a year. Bestbuy installed this drive (firmware 130F) free since I bought their store warranty with the computer purchase. I tried first Verbatim 8x DVD+R disks, they burned w/o problems. Then they did not get burned at all. I used Nero and RecordNow with no success. Then I tried HP DVD+R 8x disks, all I got invalid block address errors at the middle of the burn. Next I discovered the Secondary IDE transfer of my HP computer went to PIO. I deinstalled the Secondary IDE device and restarted WinXP. It reinstalled Secondary IDE with DMA support. Now my current transfer mode is UDMA 2. I used Nero to burn a HP 8X DVD+R disk; it burned it with a speed of nearly 8X. But when I inserted the DVD back to the drive, drive could not read its own burned disk. Though I could read this disk in other DVD drives. Now I am using RecordNow again. I made 40 burns without any problems with about 6X speed using HP 8X DVD+Rs. If this drive were not a part of my warranty I would never buy it.

POS nothing but issues bad rights wont read some DVD movies others take 3 or 4 trys to get it to even see a disk in the drive no worth the $50 i payed for it >.< i have tryed the latest bios and still it wont work right i just costered 3 dvd+Rs trying to burn a data disk i got 3 good burns out of this thing out of 20 >.>

alright, i got this dvd writer from best buy about a month ago. since then i've gotten two dvds to actually burn decently. the rest either stop burning in the first 50% of the burning phase or will only play on my pc. i have the 140 firmware and am using dvd encrypter/shrink to burn the dvds. i've also tried nero, 1 click dvd copy, and dvd fab with similar results. i don't have any other unnecessary programs running while im burning and i've tried burning most at 8x. i've used slower speeds than 8x but none have worked. if anyone can give me any information or suggestions, please let me know because if i don't get this to work correctly in the next week or two im going to take it back. thanks for putting up with my rambling.

I've had this unit for a couple of weeks, $50 after rebates. 130f firmware installed. I've tried TDK +R, TDK -R, HP +R media with no problem. I've even tried Fuji +R DL media with no problem.

The only issue I have is that Adaptec Sonic MyDVD cannot write to the TDK -R media, all others work. Kind of strange.

Yeah, I have the same problem as Bob and I have the 130 firmware. I can burn DVDs and CDs and read data from both media however when trying to watch a DVD it gets all garbled and won't get past the first menu. Tried multiple discs and the same problem.

Folks this burner is a real value! I have 4 of these and two of them came with bios 120f and the other 2 had 130f. The ones with 120f sucked. Once I kept bugging the hell out the tech suport they finally gave me the 130f update. The techie didn't know that it was availible. I told them that they needed to ask around and they did. I got what I wanted. I enlighted the techie and a few days later I got ver 140f and they all work kickass! 140f is not on their web page. I got them for $40 each after everything.

I made a new discover tonight. By having the tray opened and holding down the eject button for 10 seconds then releasing, the region code is reset (The LED should light up for a few seconds). Can anyone else verify this? I've done it twice successfully.

I have no problem burning movies now using Teon DVD+R 8X disks, but they won't play on my JVC LTR-1 DVD Player. They play on the PC though. Maybe it is the Blank DVD's. Anyone with the same problem, please advise me and let me kniw.

I'm impressed with this cheap drive. It rips pretty fast and I can play DVDs fine on my machine (no skipping like previous post). Its burned everything I've thrown at it. My only grip is that, like most drives, it does not burn overspeed. For instance, on my other burner I can burn a disc with write strategies of 2.4x, 4x, and 8x at 6x. With this drive, I can only do 4x or 8x not in between.

I have had only one problem with this drive, when I try to play a DVD movie on it the movie doesn’t play right, the picture is all messed up and glitchey. I have had no problem burning dvd+r and +rw’s. Any know why dvd movies wont play right? I only payed $49 for it so sense I have had no problems burning dvd’s I’m go to keep the drive.

I recently bought this. I am only getting about 1.5x read rate off of DVD-RW and DVD+RW (haven't tried reading any other discs yet). Why is the read rate so slow? Only 2,000 KB/s. I wonder if it will be this slow for other discs as well. It takes almost 40 minutes to copy 4.7G disc to my hard drive.

I just got the Ridata 8x dvd-r blanks in from newegg. They worked fine. It burnt at 7.8x in Nero. Works in all 3 dvd players in this house. The media identifies at ritekg05 for those interested. You can find the 100pk on newegg for $40. Very high quality/compatibility.

I got the +rw this burner came with (ritek 4x dvd+rw --jpnw11 something or ther identifies as) to work in all my dvd players by changing the booktype from dvd-rom to dvd+rw. Apparently my dvd player was picky and wanted it to say it was a +rw because it went from unknown disc to playing right away when booktype set as +rw.

The ridata dvd-rs played without having to change the book type.

I haven't tried any dvd+r and I don't plan to going by the other reviews. Stick with dvd-r, particularly ridata dvd- 8x off of newegg

This is a great burner for the price. $50 AR at bestbuy. Couldn't be happier at the price I got it.

BTW, this was using firmware 120f. The firmware it shipped with was 100f. I am waiting for them to release the 130f firmware on their site. So far its not needed.

I just ordered a 100pack of ridata 8x dvd-r off of for testing in this burner. If it fails, this burner is going back and fast. I will than get a quality burner such as a nec3500 and it has a great price to boot on newegg.

I should be recieving it friday and than I will post how it goes.

I am curious though. Where are you guys getting the 130f firmware? All I see is 120f that I have already updated to.

I have the same problems with DVD +R media. It just will not burn these. I have wasted 8 out of 10 disc. It does DVD -R media perfect. I have used nero, roxio and clone dvd and have the same results. Not for DVD +R and yes I have 130F firmware listed for the driver.

I bought this burner and have had nothing but problems. I upgraded the firmware, and also the Nero software that came with it, but it will crash my whole system when writing a DVD. I made one successful DVD-R, so it does work, but generally leaves my system unstable after using it. It crashed both times I tried to write a DVD+RW. I think I will try to return it.

I got this drive and was able to burn Memorex DVD+R x8 and x4. I'm really happy. So, my firmware is 130F. If your firmware is old, you'd better to update it.

I only got this drive to burn on the DVD+RW that it came with. I tried multiple TDK DVD+R that all failed. And many times after i burned a CD the burning program would freeze up. I exchanged it for a Plextor 716A that seems to be working very good. Wouldn't recommend the DX162D unless you want a really cheap drive and are willing to accept the fact that it won't accept most recordable media.

DVD Write types
CAV = Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is written at a constantly increasing speed.
CLV = Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is written at a constant speed.
ZCLV = Zone Constant Linear Velocity, the DVD is divided into zones. After each zone the write speed is increased.
PCAV = Partial Constant Angular Velocity, the DVD is being written at an increasing speed until a certain speed. After this speed it will not increase anymore.
