I loved the drive for the most part, but it had compatibility problems with my system. I removed the Intel ATA Mass Storage software and the Intel Application Accelerator, per HP requirement, but the unit would cause random system freezes (even during POST, prior to Windows loading). I suspect my Intel motherboard uses a firmware version of ATA that still conflicts with the drive. When it worked, it worked flawlessly (I tested with Fuji DVD+R and RW and Maxell CDR media) and the software was clean and easy. I prefer to use Dazzle DVD Complete for authoring, but the simple authoring tool they included looked ok for simple productions. A caveat: If you use NERO or any other burning software, it must be removed prior to installing the Veritas software. Not a problem for me, since I like the Veritas stuff better. Alas, I had to return the unit because my system was unstable with it plugged in. I'm hoping that the external unit (300e) will be compatible.

Bought this drive a week ago, burns flawlessly on TDK 4X certified DVDs, only $12 at Circuit City. Nice burning 4.7GB in 13 minutes :)
It also had no problems reading any other discs I threw at it, like SVCDs, VCDs, etc... Mt. Rainier support would have been nice tho.

I got my 300i last week, and did some testing with it using Verbatim DVD+RW's. not a single glich at all. Very pleased with the unit, plan on doing some video captures from my digital camcorder and making videos from that.

I like the auto firmware update checking, seems like HP was thinking ahead here.

Nice unit.. and, I considered the Sony 500AX unit, but after reading the reviews and firmware updates to get the 4X burn... decided one right out of the box with it is better..glad I made this choice..

I bought this drive from FRY'S about a month ago, and the drive will not accept any of the lower quality DVD's you can get on a spindle...none. It will only take the expensive brands of DVD's. So if your in the market for makin bootlegs cheaply, this is not the way to go, but If you have no problem buying the 3-5 dollar DVDs then its a great drive.....I did not burn any coasters with it. But I returned it for a SONY and it did acknowledge the othe DVD's.

I received my DVD300i mid February 2003 , was my first DVD writer , primarily targeted for personal video ; software is Studio 8 ; display is a Sony DVPS7700 + Epson tw100 video projector. Early results : no problem at all in either installation nor later in burning, fantastic picture displayed, and the DVD+RW looks very well accepted by this quite old dvd player

So far, I haven't had one problem with this drive. I have burned Verbatim DVD+r and DVD+RW without issue. This is my first DVD burner, and I still have not burned a coaster. Great Drive.

Some guy rated this a 1, but if you read his post he probably meant 10.

I bought the 200i a couple weeks ago and started to have problems with it, I got the drive for 299.99, I RMA'd it and a day later the 300i came out, I called HP on the phone and asked if they would just send me the 300i since its the same price. They told me I have 30 days to return or exchnage it and would be happy to do it. They also were giving away a 5pk of +R and a 3 pack of +RW and told me to keep the extra disks from the original purchase. So far the new drive is awsome, it has not made a coaster yet and is very fast. I have read really good things about the Record Now burning software but I do use Nero and have no problems with it. It is built very good and the software PKG is prettty good. B+ in my book, It should read at least 48x not 40 and the DVD readed should be 16X not 8X other then that a very good buy for 299.99.
