| Purchased from Newegg.com for less than $80 shipped. Easy installation and recognized by windows xp right away. Burned about 12 cd-r by various manufacturers flawlessly; burned about 4 dvd-r and 2 dvd+r at max speeds (ritek GO4 and TDK 8X) flawlessly. Tested both to read and write dvds and passed with flying colors. Have used Nero, Alcohol 120%, DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink all worked with no errors. Highly recommend this dvd writer. | I replaced an 8X with this unit 2 days ago. To test its speed, I copied and burned my own commercial DVD movie. The time to copy on a 4X DVD took a disappointing 46 minutes whereas my 8X did the same process in about 14 minutes. The burning via Nero was about 14 minutes--same as the 4X. | OK, i'm up to about 100 burns on this burner since i got it 3 weeks ago. I am using 2C8SE_Ritek4xDL firmware available at CDfreaks.com. I have burned Taiyo Yuden,Sony,Verbatim, and the RicohJpn4x discs from Newegg and they get the best results and are the least expensive. | Had the NEC 3500 with f.ware 2.16 for a couple of months. Have burnt several makes of disks both + and - , and it eats anything I showel into it's hungry mouth without a single hickup. Taiyo Yuden R+ 8x burns at 16x easly, and the results plays well in any of my 4 different desk players, including a veeery critical Pioneer DVD 717. The 3500 even swallows without any problems some White Label lousy old Princo's I had left floating around, as both my NEC 1300A and NEC 2510 gave variable to disasterous results on that "shit". It seems the the extra mechanical stability in the writer, needed to ensure good burning on dual layer and 16 x high speed singe layer disks, also gives a burning benefit on low grade disks too. | This drive is superb, been using it continuously for a good few weeks and have found the best brands of discs to burn. Ritek G05 8x Optodisc 8x MCC 8x and sometimes Prodisc (batch dependant it seems) Along with Ritek 48x Green Top CD-Rs. Now, if you know your stuff about flashing firmwares and are willing to 'dip your toe in the water' you can try modded firmwares from various people. Over at the Rpc1.org page you can find a firmware modified by Herrie, which is based on the latest beta firmware. The firmware has better writing strategies implemented which cover most of the popular brands/dyes discs. The upshot being, that 12x and 16x burns are a reality using slower rated discs with your favourtie burning software. I've found that most of my 8x discs will burn at 12x and some at 16x. Even had a Verbatim 4x disc that burnt at 12x. Of course, modded firmwares are strictly supplied for use at your own risk. But, its worth a try. | Just bought this from Newegg.com for $79. Chose this over the other 16x's from the great reviews it's been getting. I used this to replace my old LiteOn 411s (4x) which went to my other desktop computer for a backup. It burn my old Sony DVD+R x4 at 8x using DVD Shrink 3.2 Bought a 50 spindle of Verbatim 8x DVD+R (states compatible to 12x), but was only able to burn at 8x using DVD Shrink again. | Great DVD burner the best on the market and overall fastest and the big plus is it cost less than all of the rest, I had bought an emprex 4x dvd burner before I bought this one and after 2 months the door started to refused to open on the emprex so I dumped it to get this NEC model, and boy was I happy to have the newest latest fastest DVD burner from NEC, it's very quiet and no problems yet but sony DVD+RW media disc doesn't work with this unit don't know if I need a firmware update of something. | Came with FW 2.16. No 16x capability yet. But smooth writing, track on disc has almost no shades (I love CLV) with Platinum +R 8x (RICOH R02 003) (best value for money for 43 Euros per 50 disc spindle at alternate.de) The real burning speed goes from 4x-6x-8x. (see my post about Pioneer DVR-108 if you want to see the real writing speed on Nero. Disc was perfectly readable on 3 different standalones, very fast reading access ! CD-Burning: very fast at 48x (20-48x) and flawless! (Dumped my old LG-4520 CD-Writer therefore). DVD+R DL not tested yet. This drive is my favourite so far (out of 8 drives that I tested). | Finally dumped my MSI DR4A drive yesterday after purchasing the NEC. Just written a couple of discs........ Verbatim "Digital Movie" +R brand () wrote 1 disc ok at 4x and Datawrite Yellow 8x +R (unknown manufacturer) - first one failed at 8x using NERO latest version, the next one was ok at 6x.
