| I bought this NEC ND1000a 2.4X drive several years ago, labeled as a Verbatim (VBTDVRW1A) and burned about 25 cheap "GQ Great Quality" brand (2.4X-4X) DVDs with it. Recently, I upgraded the firmware with hacked firmware that I found at http://herrie.org. That firmware has enabled me to flawlessly burn about 100 cheap "GQ Great Quality" brand (8X) DVD+Rs at 4X speed, even though the drive was originally only a 2.4X drive! I only downloaded the hacked firmware because 2.4X DVD+Rs are getting hard to come by and I wasn't sure if the old firmware would be compatible with newer 8X DVD+Rs. Many of the 8X disc makers have warning labels saying that 2.4X drives may not be able to write 8X discs. (Neither NEC nor Verbatim provide firmware anymore.) It was a great bonus to be able to write at 4X speed. I'll be donating a couple bucks to Herrie via PayPal for the awesome work. Herrie claims that the firmware also enables use with DVD-Rs, but I haven't tried that. The installation of the firmware is for hard core computer users. There is no simple executable with a graphical user interface. The installation is DOS-based, and you can't just use the DOS emulator in Windows. You have to create a DOS boot floppy. (In Windows XP, you can do by inserting a floppy disk, right-clicking your floppy icon, and selecting the "Create DOS Boot Disk" option.) Then you have to put the hacked firmware and the NEC1x00a flash utility (also found on herrie's site) on that floppy disc. Then you have to reboot the computer into the DOS floppy disc, and execute to flash utililty with the specified command line prompts. I'm pretty hard core, but I found that a bit scary. But it worked like a charm, and now I'm burning cheap 8X DVDs at 4X (15 minutes) intead of 2.4X (25 minutes). Comments posted by Razz from United States, June 28, 2005. Rated this writer 10 of 10. |

| I've had this writer for 3 months now and burned well over 100 DVDs with it. I had a few problems with cheap DVDRW media but it's fine when you use decent ones. Everything I've burned plays 100% in my Pioneer DVD players (DV444 & DV350) using DVD Decrypter to rip, dvd2one to rehash and Nero to burn. I did not even get to install any software for the drive. The crash happens when Windows is scanning the hardware looking for new devices. Any time a computer crashes it can corrupt files if it happens while the computer is writing files. When I disconnect the drive the crash stops happening. | Just another thing, if you have loads of MP3's & have a cyberhome DVD player this is a good combination.Fill it up with MP3's (you will get about 80 hours worth on one 4.7GB disc at 128k!!)Stick it in you Cyberhome DVD player & you would spend about 3.5 days listening to the music start to finish).Just remember the Cyberhome DVD player will not play if the disc has over a thousand tracks on the disc, so maybe convert a few to ALBW before burning.My other two players the Toshiba & Philips DVD880 will not exept MP3's on DVD discs, only on 700mb CDR's - get burning now!!! | I got this drive about 3 months back http://www.blankdiscshop.co.uk/, initialy just to back loads of zips & mp3 data discs that I have on cdr's & had no problems a all.Then tried ripping & burning DVD movies & started running into problems.I was using Clad Xp, VD2AV & Ulead DVD MovieFactory.I found I could only write to DVDRW+ discs & once only, kept getting loads of errors & gave up on the idea of using DVDR+ discs.I popped back to this site last week & read up on present DVD burning movie tools - Cracked it!! Using CopyToDVD,DVD2one & VD Decrypter it worked with no problems whatsoever & have ripped & burned about 10 DVD movies onto DVDR+ discs (25 datawrite discs costing £29).It only takes about an hour on my PC (Athlon XP 1700) & they play back fine on my Philips DVD880, Cyberhome & my Toshiba SD-220E Dvd players, chapters & extras to. Considering I payed £115, it not bad at all - seem them today in an email from a shop for £99.This is a good drive, though writing speeds are increasing this might seem a little slow at 2.2 speed, but for anyone on a budget this is a real bargain **No drivers or software with it.Just installed it, booted it up & it worked fine Comments posted by Muscarine from Other, June 07, 2003. | Got this drive at OfficeMax for $150 after rebates. It was packaged as a CenDyne. I installed it, XP Home recognized it and away I went. | for MATT YES, it is possible to change disk boot; you need to flash with firmware HP DVD writer 300 all firmware on : "http://etna.rpc1.org/nec/" and you can see sarah (and mine) contribution on "http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=14416&highlight=nec+1000" I have a mustek m560 and it play dvd+rw with dvdrom book type other way this writer is nice and cheap i give only 9/10 because nec don't provide firmware that can make possible to change book type and to find it, i spend a lot of time on internet to find what i need. | I've got this drive, but have a question. Is there any way to set the compatability bit settings (see http://www.dvdplusrw.org) to set DVD+RW disc book type to DVD-ROM? My old Toshiba player will supposedly read RW discs marked as DVD-ROM, but I can't figure out how to set the book type, as it doesn't show in Nero, and the tools they have will not work. | I bought this drive only because it was the cheapest on the market, fearing that I'd be disapointed. I was wrong ! This drive works just fine, it burnt about 20 DVD+R so far, and no coaster. | Perfect! Finally a product that works. No flaws. No coasters. Good workmanship went into this drive. No noise, reads, plays everything. Packaged as a Verbatim Producer. Amazingly the drive will overwrite an RW with data already on it like a VCR would. No need to format but need to be carefull just like the tapes that you dont write over needed data. Of the packages included, I only have use for Nero Express. I have Pinnacle Studio 8 and DVD Movie Factory so the other lesser programs bundled are not needed. Drive works with DVD DeCrypter with no problems. Instant Copy works perfectly. I use Imation disks which works flawlessly with this drive. The +R disks look purple! At 2.4x, it is fast enough for me. | This a very good burner. I paid £116 from Novatech in the UK. For DVD backup I'm using, DVD Decryptor and Pinnacle Instant Copy. For Data bacukup I'm using Nero. I have a pioneer DV-444 DVD player and its played everything I've burnt to date without any problems. I have used the following media without problems: Rioch DVD+RW Verbatim DVD+RW Traxdata DVD+R Datawrite DVD+R FWS DVD+R Datapaq DVD+R is strange as it burns OK, plays on my DVD player OK but I cannot view, copy or play it on the NEC writer. | This drive is also being sold under the same of Mirror (http://www.mirrorproducts.co.uk) DVD+ writer in Dixons Group stores, but it's just this drive OEM'd. If you get from Dixons, you'll get no instructions, no media, not even an IDE cable, but it work!! I've not always been lucky with hardware but under XP this thing installed first time without any problems, and burned CDR's, CDRW's, DVD+R's and DVD+RW#s flawlessly. Well worth thinking about. Wasnt really too sure how well this thing would perform, lets just say yes there maybe better burners out there but for the money and quality i would seriously take this little baby into consideration. | Great dvd writer. Bought it at www.kmelektronik.de in nuernberg / germany. 229.00 euros (bulk version, without any software) is a bargain in Germany. Pinnacle Studio 8 and Nero 5.5.10.0 work fine. Davideo on DVD from G-Data as well. Needed to download an update for the drive at www.vob.de to recognize the NEC drive. Dreamt a long time about the Sony, now I am very happy with the NEC. | Got this DVD Writer about 2 months ago. Bought as "Verbatim DVD+ Producer." Works fantastic with Stomp Record Now Max and Nero. Have used various programs like DVD Workshop and Movie Factory with it. If you want the cheapest (in price) DVD Writer with reliability and quality go for this one. | Got this as a christmas present to self. It was a toss-up between the new Sony dual-format 500U. The NEC ND-1000A won due to price of the drive and the price of the media. At the time of writing (Jan 03) DVD-R is marginally cheaper than DVD+R - however, DVD+R can be written to at 2.4x speed. The slightly cheaper DVD-R media is 1x speed. Higer speed (2.4x and above) DVD-R is considerably more expensive than DVD+R. If write speed is important and budget is a consideration then this drive will not disappoint. If budget is not a consideration then go with the Sony 500U. The NEC ND-1000A is also packaged by Verbatim (VBTDVRW1A) and sold as the Verbatim Producer+ My experience, to date, in using this drive has been very good. | I also use it with RecordNow Max and observed no problems writing DVD+R or +RW. In my computer this device is the primary-slave. May be, this is the reason that I have strange effects in Windows-Explorer sometimes. Futhermore the DVD-bitsetting tool does not work with this writer (may be in future versions).
