I love this thing. Just stayed up all night putting it through as many tests as I could think of, from burning ISO backups to converting then burning home AVI files. Not a single (burner related) problem!

$165 on Pricewatch at the moment (4/29/03), and worth every cent.

Did I mention I love this thing?

the burner is good
I like the burner
Those are your exact words.....
Why are you giving only a 6 rating for this very good burner bob?

Bought this drive for $177 from Newegg about 2 weeks ago. I got a
DVD-R 12 sample pack from Meritline. I use DVDInfo and it said all disk were 2x When I first got the burner it burned at 2x. Now for some reason Nero display burning at 2x but it's really burning at 1x. Everything burns ok but at 1x. Other then speed, the burner is good. Hope someone finds a fix because I like the burner. Rated it 6 because of speed problem.

I bought this drive month ago and have burned now about 30 datawrite classic yellow discs (1x). All worked great in philips 622 standalone.
Imation dvd-rw disc does not work at all. Also bought 25 White label dvd-rw and none worked. Both manufacturer ID is OPTODISCK001. Had to buy expensive Verbatims and they are working almost flawlessly. Sometimes I get some sense errors during writing and have to make full erase before disc works.

Bought this DVD-RW from Newegg (for $175). So far, it has run flawlessly, and even records on cheap DVD-RW disks at 2x with Nero 5.5.x.x -- even though it's only rated at 1x for -RW (2x for -R). Burns CD-R's at 12x without any problems (anything higher seems to have problems reading in regular CD-ROM drives). Would highly recommend this drive to anyone who doesn't want to pay upwards of $300 for the Sony (+/-RW). Haven't tried it with movies yet...

I have only had this drive for about a week now but I have to say I love it! I have burned 4 DVD-rw's using Maxell media purchased from Best Buy and also burned 6 on the House brand Media DVD-r purchased from www.allmediaoutlet.com (25 pack for $25 including shipping). So far no coaster and very quit I just love this drive.

I have tested it using Nero and Sonic Foundry's DVD Architect, They both work perfectly. I highly recomend this drive. I paid $175 including shipping and so far.. very much worth every penny!

Bought this writer because it's one of the cheapest and it correctly encodes EFM: still it works fine and it's very quiet, but...why is it reported on several tests and on this site as dvd+r read compatible while my Nero 55.10.20 info-toolkit windows says it isn't?
Thanx to the one who knows the answer....

I previously was using the Panasonic LF-D321, but found compatibility isuues with many types of disks. So, after perusing this thread, I decided to get this model. I must say I'm VERY satisfied. I had 3 different brands of DVD-R that wouldn't work in the Panasonic, and they all worked flawlessly in the Toshiba. I have noticed that when I insert a DVD to backup, it doesn't read the disk. But I'm sure this is just a problem with my setup.

Bought this drive about a week ago from newegg.com ($177+ tax). Ripped and burned several movies. Excellent drive. As mentioned before, very quiet and seems to rip faster than my Pioneer using DVD decrypter. Highly recommend this drive to anyone who wants to get a DVD burner.

Also got my drive from newegg.com for $180 US and have found it a joy to use. This is the quietest drive (of any type) I've ever used...quiet tray, quiet playing or burning...and I haven't made a coaster yet (using 2X Princo and some El Cheap-o CompUSA media that was too cheap to pass up). I'm SO glad I followed the recommendations of the folks at this forum. This drive rocks!

This is a great drive for both cds and dvds. One amazing discovery is that when burning with the latest version of Nero on Apple branded 2x dvd blanks, it records fine at 4x! Nero reports 2x as the recording speed, but it burns a 118 minute movie consistently in 29 minutes. With Memorex and Imation it burns only at 2x.

Comments posted by baraken from Other, April 01, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

I have had this dvd-writer for many months now and i am very happy with the unit. I have burned many dvd movies and ps2 dvds with it and not a single coaster. It works well with all media types. I used Princo, Optodisc and Toshiba and all worked perfect on my standalone and ps2. This burner is close to the LG but if i had to make a choice id pick the toshiba. Great for music and video. The best thing about this burner is it will burn dvdrs with scratches on them unlike most picky burners like Sony and Pioneer. Great burner.

Bought this drive, 'cause it was one of the cheapest available in my hometown & the good feedback here.

I've burned 2 DVDs (Movie) with no probs! One DVD5 using DVD Decrypter, one DVD9 using DVD2One/CopyTo DVD. No probs playing on my Cyberhome-player.
Using Princo DVD-R 1x, also testing Memorex 1x. Can't get any 2x at this time, but i can wait 60 min while burning.
The result is important, not the speed!

Didn't test it with Nero, Bulk-Version came with VOB InstantCD/DVD

Have fun with this very good drive!

bought the drive oem from Micro Pro online, they shipped it within 24hrs and their standard shipping was 2day air via ups. and having a good reseller in the midwest is a lot better then on the west coast.

burner worked fine with xp from the get go and nero 5.5.10.15a also worked without a hitch. so far i've burned with 2 different dvd-r brands and one cd-r brand.

bought a 5 pack of memorex version 2. they only would burn at 1x but they still worked in my laptop and the burner.

bought 2x ritek online, silver/purple, and they work fine at 2x and also work in laptop and burner.

bought BeAll from samsung since it was on sale but havnt tried them yet.

used my old 16x memorex cd-r to burn some audio cds at 16x and everything was fine.

for summary, u want a cheap and kick ass burner? this is it.

This is the best process for this burner:

1. Rip movie only with DVD Decrypter
2. Encode (squeeze) movie to 4.00 gigs (not 4.37!) with the latest version of DVD2One
3. Create image file of the VIDEO_TS folder and AUDIO_TS folder using ImgTools version 0.89
4. Burn Image with DVD Decrypter at 1X speed (very important at 1X)!

This process causes no freezing, no skipping, and no pixilation. I encode to 4.00 gigs due to bad edges on cheap media, which prevents the movie from freezing at the end. Quality is still good for me (using a 46" wide HDTV).

Good Luck!

Just bought this usit a week ago after doing research. Sure I could have spend more $$ and bought the sony that suports both formats and is a 4X burner, but I honestly thing the dvd- format will win out over the + format and I didnt want to spend over $400 CAN for it. This unit more then meets my expectations, have used Verbatem DVD-R and DVD-RW no probs, used princo 1x and rytek 2x, no problems to report so far. Excellent unit for the price and performance.

Bought this from newegg.com for $177 free shipping. Bought some fujifilm dvd-r discs, burns without flaw. They play without flaw on both my old RCA RC5231Z and my newer toshiba dvd players at home. Well worth every penny.

Worked great for me. Only one coaster, but that was Nero's fault (which really sux for burning dvd:s). But works great with these softwares:
Instant Cd/DVD
DVDdecrypt
DVDxCopy
RecordNow (stange thing: when burning with RecordNow the progessindicator stops at 82% each time, but the whole movie works great afterwards so I don't care!)

I'm burning with Infiniti DVD-r:s in 2x. The DVD-r:s don't work in my Centrum Gemini DVD-player but in Pioneer 535 (and proparbly the most other DVD-players over 150 $)

I have had this drive for about 4 months now. Very happy with it so far but recently started spitting out coasters. I was using Princo then switched to Ritek plus a 10 pack of Memorex. I use Nero to burn and as of lately cannot get a DVD to work yet. Tried every burning software with every config. When I do get one to successfully burn, it freezes near the end of every movie.

If anyone else has had this problem and found a solution write me, motions1@hotmail.com

I bought the bulk Toshiba 2 weeks ago for 220 euro and 50 Ritek G3 from eBay for 80 euro incl. shipping. That's 300 euro overall for a complete 2x DVD-burning setup. So far I've burned 6 DVD-Rs and no coaster, everything worked perfect from start at 1x and 2x with the original 1.31 firmware.
Good one!

I have the same problems as Mastermods. Using Instant Copy for backup movie.. Movie starts locking up on my Cyberhome 500 after about 1-1.5 hrs. then locks up at menu. Using Ritek DVD 1x -R. Wont recognize on PS2 tried as other player. ?Wonder if Cbhome is overheating and not reading errors as well... disk is really warm when I remove.. but dont have this problem with original.

Will this player really use 2X media? Does instant copy auto sense this or do you have to change settting

Thx,
Hotoru

I got this burner SD-R5002 from newegg.com for $180 shipped. its the OEM model which means it doesnt come with media, software or cables.I had nero for burning all ready and you can get the best dvd copy software for free just read here at DVDhelp and you will see what to use. I ordered the sample pack from meritline.com they give you 2 ea of 6 different types disk for $20. I have tried them all and all burned good. The best thing to do when useing nero is dont mess with the default setting I did and it stop burning dvds that could be read on my home theater dvd player. I reset them back to default and it started working again. Heres a hint use a dvd-rw to pratice with dont use the dvd-r you only get one burn with those. I can recommend dvdxcopy if you want to make copies of the dvds you own it works really good . Iam in the process of backing up all my dvds that I own. This is a great burner and I would highly recommend it. Dont worry about the speed 1x it takes one hour to burn a 2hour disk 4.3gb the 2x burn is 30min Im not in that big of a hurry to burn it in 15mins. the 4x disk cost more and or harder to find. I see sony is moving over to dvd-r/w now they dont want to get stung again like they did with betamax vs vhs. IMHO -r/rw is the way to go I waited for the prices to drop under $200 and its here now .go for it you wont be sorry this burn is great.

Price fell considerably over last month, at least in Hong Kong.

I bought this for HK$1780 (US$228), now only (US$189)
Also 2x DVD-R disk, the one I'm using is only US$1/disk

The price for 2x DVD+R and 4x DVD-R is at least double.

Comments posted by Uncle Tall from Other, March 01, 2003. Rated this writer No rating.

I love this drive! Got the black bezel version for $189 delivered, and have burned a bunch of DVD-R and DVD-RW's flawlessly. Cheap media, good media, doesn't matter, this thing works great!

Of all the problems I've read, most (if not ALL) are USER problems, not the drive! If you use Nero, make sure you use the latest version and burn in UDF mode for maximum compatibility (don't use Nero's DVD Video mode, there's a known bug in this mode).

Anyways, reasearch your drives and you'll find this is the SECOND BEST drive out there, the first being the Sony that burns both DVD+ and DVD- formats at 4x instead of this drive's DVD- only, at 2X.

And when your research is done, you'll be happy with your SD-R5002!
