I have been using my DVR-A03 for several months now and have recorded over 10 DVD-R's. I have had no problems and am VERY happy with my results. I am moving all my old VHS tapes to DVD which, I have found, can be played on all DVD players in the family. Great recorder and a lot of fun!

Excellent drive, all my DVD-R disks have worked fine, even when burning on an old K6-400 machine. If you are worried about compatibility with stand alone players and DVD-ROM drives, avoid the cheapest unbranded DVD-Rs, Pioneer DVD-R disks will play back in most drives. The bundled VOB software does the burning well enough, but the MyDVD program I really didn't like.

i have had this about a month now and have found it to be a very good piece of equiptment but has a few bug wight will need to be sorted (i.e:operating system not reading the drive or the media ).i have made about 20-30 films with not many problems

I love my DVR-A03. I am still saving up for a full-blown authoring drive. But, until I save $5,000 bucks, this is it. I thought the 135mm to 150mm light frequency thing was gonna be a problem for authoring. But, so far, I haven't found anything I can't do with it, short of writing the authoring title index, which is really not imperative. It backs up my Hard Drive (4.7GB per)and saves all those downloads I can't just delete, as well as burns DVDs and audios with every software burner package. Maybe I don't need that expensive drive after all! I have seen the new Pionier, but the only difference, from what I can tell, is faster CDR write speed (whoop). The problem was inexpensive media. Someone earlier asked where you can get inexpensive media? Well, I found a place called http://www.dvdr4less.com to get everyday low cost media. To beat that, they have sales all the time to make the prices even lower! And you can get from small quantities (for the little guy) to bulk (for home studio) at GREAT prices. They offer General media (which works with just about everything) to name brands that you know and love. They usually have the new stuff that everyone is buzzing about (like the "light green back" DVDR or the "UV RESISTANT" with the invisible coating that is great for audio cds used in the car stereo). And they have all the accessories to go with it! By the way, this is NOT AN AD (I know, I got carried away). I am just passing on some helpful info that might help save some BUCKS. By the way, get good chassis cooling. Heat is a killer. I haven't had any problems, but my BUD's have mentioned DVDRW rewrite recognition problems after a few erasures and solved them with better cooling. Wierd!

A small add on comment to my ealier comment, heat is an issue ( though it's always an issue with any optical drive ). My A03 has been on a coaster binge as of late, took me a while to figure out what was the culprit..heat. So now I am going to do some rethinking of my small atx case to cool down the drive to keep it from heating up as once it gets hot, no media inserted ( blank media ) would be recognized by the drive, and when it did and was borderline warm, a start of a burn under those conditions guarantees me a coaster.

Tried COMP USA brand DVD-R media and it works well, Been getting more of GQ ( Great Quality ) and Apple Media DVD-R for use and been having good success ( coaster issue aside ) with playback on my 3 dvd test units. But other than that it works well. I also upgraded the firmware to 1.68 and have yet to apply the RPC-1 patch that's out for the drive.

Overall, I am very pleased with the A03 writer. While there will most likely never be a writer that can make discs that will play on a Toshiba SD2109, most other players handle my discs flawlessly. I have a Pioneer 343, which replaced my SD2109, and it reads the discs made by the A03 flawlessly.

I'm using DVDit PE mainly to burn my DVD-R/-RW discs. I use the -RW for evaluating my projects, then burn the final on -R media from Meritline.

I've been burning 2X with non-Pioneer media, including cd-recordable.com's discs and Meritline's discs using Prassi PrimoDVD.
I've updated the firmware to 1.68 and that went smoothly.

My friend has a Sony DVD changer and an Apex DVD/VCD player, both of which play my DVD-Rs flawlessly. He recently bought a Sony DVD+RW drive for his PC and found that the discs that unit made could not be read by either of his players. He returned the Sony and bought an A03 on my advice, and after seeing how well my discs played on his equipment.

Need I say more?

ok. first of all this drive has been great. some boneheads here want the +R and +RW standard, but this is inane. the media for these drives is often $10 or more retail PER DISC. while DVD-R is under $2 at this point. the +R/RW standard is crap for the most part and you pay a lot more over time for a 2.4x to 2.0x burn speed difference.

greatest issues i've had is NOT with the drive, but the different types of DVD-R media. yes there are differences, not always the color but certain brands don't work with certain settop units. this isn't the PIONEER's fault like some of you geniuses would think. it's the media! i've have very good luck with my top of the link Sony SACD/DVD deck but my older Panasonic deck from last year got very picky with the no-name generic DVD-Rs.

I bought my DVR-A03 about 3 months ago. The installation was a snap. Put in the drive, plugged in all cables and it was ready to go. I have Windows XP and had absolutely no problems. Installation of the software also went smoothely. Sonic MyDVD works great and is probably good enough for home movies, but I upgraded to Sonic DVDit! just to have a little more control over the menu functions. Veritas PrimoDVD is nothing fancy and I haven't used it yet.
Writing speed of the DVR-A03 is okay. I burn most of my DVDs without a test burn and it works just fine. I use a separate CD writer to burn CDs so CD writing speed is not an issue for me.
What is most important for me: the burned DVDs play in my stand alone DVD Player (even though the manual says that the DVD Player is incompatible with DVD-R !) and in my other DVD-ROM drive.
If compatibility is an issue for you, buy the Pioneer drive !

My system is SCSI everything except for this IDE drive.
72Gig 10kRPM Seagate SCSI
18Gig 10kRPM Quantum SCSI
9Gig Quantum SCSI
12/10/32s Plexwriter CD-RW SCSI
DVD ROM Pioneer slotload SCSI
Zip100 SCSI
If I HAVE to have one IDE device, this is it. Enable one IDE port and plugged it in without any issues. Apple DVD-R's burned on the Pioneer A03 work in everything (laptop, Pioneer home DVD, wife's and kid's PC DVD Rom and all extended familie's PC's and home DVD players).

Pioneer and Apple media burn at 2x, Great Quality brand from Fry's burns at 1x but still works fine. Media is slightly below $2. Bundled software is so-so.

This is the best drive out there .... now only if it were SCSI.

I bought it, installed it, and started burning. Had no problems whatsoevever. The disks it makes play in my Panasonic RV31 without a hitch. I'm recording to DVD-RW while I'm playing around, then burn the end result to DVD-R. All I need now is really good authoring software.

I love this thing. Got mine online (where else these days?) at www.goroyalpc.com in early February 2002 for just $370 with only 8 bucks shipping!!! Its the retail box too. Comes with a DVD-r and all the hookups. Tons of uses too. Made my first DVD a couple days after receiving it. DVD video authoring is very exciting and fun; very new stuff. I'm having a blast making my own porn movies to entertain college buddies, "Hey dude, isn't that your MOM!?!? Where did you get this DVD?"...

Had the drive for about a month now and love it. It burns my DVD-R cheap media and of course Pioneer media with no problem at all. Both DVD-R and DVD-RW play in my Pioneer DV 444 perfect. I only used Nero to burn with so far so I can't comment on any other burning apps. I'm using a VIA chipset board and haven't burned a CD-R or CD-RW since I have my Plex but it doesn't surprise me about some incompatability issues. I wish media was a little cheaper and was at LEAST 2X compatible. Writing at 4X would be a perk too. At 1X, waiting an hour is driving me nuts when we go so used to these faster and faster CD-RW drives. All in all, great drive!!!

I have this DVD-writer for a few weeks and I'm happy with it. But if I can inform you, Pioneer is comming with a new writer. That one is faster in writing a DVD-R(W). Another thing is that some electronica concerns agreed the new DVD standard. Have a look at http://news.com.com/2100-1040-839805.html

Now we have to wait.......

Had mine for a couple of days now.... Installation was a breeze, did'nt install any of the budled software that came with it... ( from what I've read here and elsewhere its not all that good! ) - Works great with NERO / SPRUCEUP / ULEAD DVD FACTORY - It's a bit fussy with the Unbranded DVDR's I've used so far.... Will only write a 1x Speed with these.. TDK's & Pioneer DVDR's work at the stated 2x Speed.... Still, I cant complain too much as I Only Paid £2 each for the unbranded ones. ( Compared to the Branded prices !!!!! ) - I've made 2 recordings so far and they've worked on every DVD player I've tried them on ( DVD R ... Is here to stay !! ) - All in all a realy great machine.... "Nice One Pioneer".

Something about compatability issues.

I work with an Abit KG7 MB (AMD 761/ Via 686B) with Windows XP. I have used Pioneer and Fuji DVD-R, Verbatim DVD-RW, Pioneer CDR, TDK CDR, Parrot CDR and Pioneer CDR without any problems. I also used a CD RW,rated 4x: the drive will not accept high speed rated CD RW according to the manual.

Comments posted by elpedro from Other, February 20, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

I also have had problems with CD-R and CD-RW disks... I made 5 coasters the day I installed it and have yet to find a resolution. System board is an ABIT KT7-RAID, which uses the (or one of the) VIA chipsets that this burner doesn't like... It's not a big deal for me since I have a Yamaha CD burner that handles those faster than the DVR-A03 can anyway, but it's still a _REAL_ annoyance... Latest firmware 1.68 doesn't seem to resolve the problem either... Good things CD-R's are so cheap. =) It likes the DVD-R media Pioneer makes just fine, and the Apple DVD-R is very solid with this burner...

In contrast to all glowing reports here I've had quite some problems with the DVR-A03.

Most problems are most likely related to an incompatibility with the VIA-chipset on the motherboard in my 1.2Ghz Athlon system.

In any case it is impossible to write CD-R or CD-RW's with the DVR-A03 in my computer. Emails to Pioneer have not lead to a solution for this problem.
(BTW the drive does write CD-R(W)'s in a friend's computer, so the drive itself is not defective).

Writing DVD-R(W)'s works fine. However I've tried some non-Pioneer disks (TDK for example) with no success. It seems only to accept the original (rather expensive) Pioneer DVD-R en DVD-RW disks.

My Philips standalone player does not play the DVD-RW disks, just the DVD-R's. Which makes testing the final result before definitly burning it to DVD-R impossible.

I personally find the MyDVD software rather unpracticle (this of course is subjective).

All in all, it's nice to have the possibility to burn DVD-Video's but it does come with a great deal of problems.

iVE HAD IT FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND I THINK ITS PRETTY GOOD WHEN YOU COMPARE IT TO THE OTHERS. iT WRITES CDS AT 8X BUT THE BAD THING IS I HAVE NOT GOT IT TO WRITE AT 2X IN NERO WITH THE LATEST VERSION AND ALSO IT READS CD'S AT A LOW 24X OTHERWISE ITS HOT!

This player DOES read DVD+RW discs, and does burn at 2x in nero. a great player and burner.

Bought it for $350 on Feb 10th and it rocks so far! Very impressed! Much better thatn the HP that my friend got. The blank DVD media that I bought for $2.25 works great with it too! Works in my DVD player! Way to go Pioneer!

Is there a problem with the Primo DVD program writing in 16x9 format? I can write perfectly in 4:3 but messed when I try and do 16x9 format.

Comments posted by fdnyemt from Other, February 11, 2002. Rated this writer 10 of 10.

Having had the drive for more than 4 months, all I can say it It rocks.

For media, it will use Apple's media as it's cheap and relaible media for DVD-R work, have even use the new Pioneer CPRM DVD-RW discs. So far the DVD-RW discs have played back on every DVD Unit I have encountered so far. I have used Verbatim DVD-RW and Pioneer DVD-RW with no issues. In the DVD-R, I have and am using TDK, Memorix, Verbatim, Great Quality , Pioneer and Apple DVD-R.

For DVD-RW it's a full 1 hour to write, and full erases take as much, quick erases take less.

For CD-RW it burns at 4x, and at this it will only use 4x rated media, nothing faster like 4x to 10 or higher. I am thinking due to dye layer or reflectivity rating, as none of my high speed RW discs ( rated up to 12x ) will work with the Pioneer.

For it's reading prowness it's ok, I was not expecting s uberfast cd reader ( 24x is not too bad at all CD ROM @ CAV CD-R/CD-RW are 16x @ CAV) nor cd audio ripper (10x @ CAV), as it's a good trade off considering what it can do and the stability at which it does it. True it's not like my Plextor 24/12/40, but then that unit is a speed freak of it own nature, and I wait with baited breath at the day Plextor makes a DVD-R/RW drive to show everyone how it's done right.

For the Software, Clone Cd and CDRWin do not work with it ( yet.. ) so this might be a concern if you run a single system with only 1 optical drive in the computer, but Nero does work with it and version above 5.5.3.5 and above will recognize DVD-R and DVD-RW discs and allow writing to them for data and video. It will also burn DVD-R at 2x on selected media ( Pioneer, and maybe Apple but I coastered trying ) I do not use the provided software of Primus DVD as I prefer Nero, nor do I like MyDVD, instead prefering Ulead Movie Factory and Ulead DVD Picture show as both work well with the drive. SpruceUp is another one of my favorite Authoring packages that works well with the drive.

For the OS it runs under Win2ksp2 and WinXP ( I have used it in both ) very well once the ASPI layer is installed. Like any Optical burning drive it's best set to master on a secondary channel but not on a RAID controller. And for the record DVD-R is the standard, so to those who invested in DVD+RW / +R drive, well there is always Ebay.
