I had mines for 2 years. After 4 months, it would stop displaying the disc name. Then it would stop reading DVD's alltogether. Only reads the DVD's I made on it. Maybe because it's 2.4x DVD+RW. But the 8x DVD+R gets recognized about 5% of the time. No firmwares are of any help. But I have a solution though somewhat pricey. Ebay search for the GCA-4040N drive.

I just purchased a HP zd7000 also and it has the SD-R6252. Since the very first day, it was unable to write DVD's. (Now why would they release a notebook with this big of a problem). I did my googling and found the SP28709 updated firmwire that says it updates the following enhancements:

* Adds enhanced support for reading/writing to DVD+R media that was previously unrecognized by the drive.

* Adds support for writing to media rated up to 8X.

* Adds DVD-RW media support.

Total BS....it has NOT recognized one single -R/RW media yet. Playing DVD's is like watching an old Chinese B movie with all the skipping and studdering. This is NOT a slow machine: 3.2Ghz, 2GB Ram, etc....I have contacted HP and they are sending me a replacement with NO questions asked. Makes you wonder why the notebook went out in the first place and why no questions are even being asked about it.

Update as soon as the new one comes in.

quote "Apparently there is a sony alternative that works"

IS THIS REFERRING TO MEDIA OR A DIFFERENT WRITER?

Can anyone suggest a (relatively cheap) replacement that will fit in my HP Pavilion ZD7145EA laptop?

I've spent too much time downloding firmwares and drivers. I'm tired of its ultra-low capacity for reading non-original cd/DVD. I use to fall asleep during burn DVD process. And I can't accept that. I bought an hp zd7000 because its supposed quality. Why Hp site don't post the drivers?

I never thought how important a writer could be untill I tested my own one.

I've learnt for the next time: Check the make and model before buying on internat to avoid purchase products like this.

When I found this page I understood that I'm not the only one.

I've had problems to burn DVD's with it. I downloaded the upgrade... didn't seem to work. Anyways, i found some brands that WOULD WORK (to burn and then to read it, always on my notebook, still have to try with other pc's), here they are:
- EMTEC, DVD+R, Single Sided, 8x certified. www.emtec-international.com
- PLATINUM, DVD+R (Plus Format), Speed 8x.
The free license software i used was: Flash CD & DVD Burner.

A brand that wouldn't work: FMAC DVD+R ironicly 2,4x - 8x compatible!

Good luck :)

When I first got it, it won't burn DVD+R (sonic dvd+r media). It fails at the end of burning process. wasted 3 dvd disks. I then downloaded lastest firmware upgrade, and it worked, take about 20 minutes to burn a dvd+r.
The firmware upgrade notes says it support dvd-r after upgrade, but it does not.

I have been using it to burn dvds with no problem. So far any media that I have tried from TDK 4X to Memorex 8X have worked fine. No coasters. The burnt dvds play in any dvd player tried and it always reads a dvd when it is installed. It is slow but what do you expect from a 2.4x.

Comments posted by shamus from Canada, February 19, 2005. Rated this writer 8 of 10.

It sucks. Can't write, can't read (even it's own burnt dvd's)! Firmware upgrade doesn't help at all. Lots of coasters, ranging from every possible brand name dvd media. Have over 35+ coasters in 2.5 months! Nightmares.

Toshiba and HP should have a total/global recall of this product!!! It's a waste of time trying to work around it and trying to find a dvd blank media for it--mission impossible.

If anyone find a solution, please let all of us know.

hi all,
i also had problems burning to 8 speed dvd+r (well, burning with 2.4, but the disc supported 8 ;)) and then reading your comments, it scared the hell out of me :P...

but after some googling i found out that there was just a simple firmware update, that would enable to burn to 8 speed dvd+r... i downloaded en installed the update, burned a movie (legally off course, rofl) and it worked :) so, i'll put the link in this message!

greetz,
erik...

download link for the firmware update:

This drive will on occasion read a DVD... most cases it doesn't even recognize a DVD in the drive.

I bought an HP Pavilion ZD7145ea Laptop (Its a MONSTER) with one of these drives in. Because I have a multi format writer in my PC i'm only using +RW discs in my laptop. I have Philips 2.4x DVDRW and Maxell 4x DVDRW discs and it works fine with both. Everything I've put in it so far it has read no problem although the spin up is a little slower than i'd like.
I've given it a 5 rating because I havent tried +R discs and as I dont intend to, the rating can t really go any higher.

Avoid !!!
Came with my hp/compaq nx9110.
Reads & writes cds ok, but won't recognise 4x DVD+R.
Apparently there is a sony alternative that works.

toshiba should stop making this drive and hp should stop putting them in their notebooks.

Bought new Verbaim DVD+R 8X recordable discs and Win XP + Toshiba can't recognize it other than 0 byte free and 0 bytes used.
Apparently I have to buy a slower speed 2.4X discs
